ESPN computers say Blazers to miss playoffs

I don't think the win prediction is that far off, I'd gamble on 45-47 wins but i'm also a homer, but when you have about 11 teams that will be fighting tooth and nail for a playoff spot there is going to be a lot of teams very close togethor at the end of the season. GSW will be seed 1 and then two teams, probably OKC/Hou/Spurs will be just behind the warriors and a decent amount ahead of the rest of the pack but I expect 4-11 to be separated by 3 or fewer wins. ITs going to be a blood bath.

I think there's going to be a fair amount of space between Golden State and the #2 seed. San Antonio is always a threat to run off an unexpected 60+ win season, but currently Golden State is the only 60+ win team I see. Other teams could have been 60 win teams in a weaker conference, but this West will make it tough for the Spurs, Rockets or Thunder to break 60, IMO.

I agree that I think only GS will be a 60 win team but I think Spurs/Rockets/Thunder two of them will have a nice cushion between themselves and #4 and then the rest will just be a blood bath where a 3 game losing streak will potentially take a team from 4th to 11th.

Apparently ESPN missed that 1 game where we beat the Warriors. First in the West

Have those ESPN computers ever played basketball at a high level? I didn't think so. Computers never understand heart, stick-to-it-iveness or grit.

Hopefully the Blazers have those. I don't understand those things either.
This ain't the Mighty Ducks son......talent wins out the majority of the time. Learn the game......THEN POST!

I guess it's always about the IF but if things go right for us I don't see any reason why we shouldn't make the playoffs whether the West is loaded or not. I believe when we are are healthy and clicking we can compete with anyone. Now whether we can do that mentally and physically is what the season will be all about.

If Portland were to finish with 43 wins but in the #9 or 10 spot in the West, what happens to NeO and Stotts?

I say they survive it...but my view is they'll exceed expectations and finish strong. What are the chances all these super teams stay healthy? Some will...chances are some will look different after the allstar break. We're young and I'm banking on that to carry us. I'm not convinced the Spurs are going to be this huge powerhouse anymore...I think they'll finally drop off quite a bit.

We are missing two pieces:

*Go-to scorer off the bench (Clarkson, Okafor(?), Barton, etc)
*Playmaker off the bench - Turner? meh. Rubio was my original choice

If our starting 5 is Dame, CJ, Turner, Caleb and Nurkic then yes, we don't have much offensive firepower of the bench.
Someone like Lou Williams could also be a good fit.
I would ideally want someone who would fit with either Dame or CJ in the backcourt and be an offensive weapon

I don't know. Lou can certainly score. But the problem with Lou is he is known to be one of the worst defenders in the NBA. People on this board complain about CJ and Dame....there is no comparison in effort. Lou has a World B Free type of mindset when he is on the floor. Bottom line is I don't think he would be a good complement to our two guards.

I don't look at ESPN predication for the season there usually off. But every season it usually comes down to what teams has less key injuries and which team gel together the quickest. Yes we trade away Crabbe and his 10 points game. Some of us will say he shoots the 3 very well. But it doesn't really matter it still 10 points a game. Some one on our team will be able to cover those 10 points for us. Maybe it will be players that will increase there points per game but that 10 points will be cover.

Defense is a team game. It's a system.

Neil will be fired based on the potential of how his two rookies look. If they shine and we still miss the playoffs, but the future looks bright..........he will buy himself some more time. If they are busts...then that is a different story.

Stotts will be judged on how well the team plays, but not necessarily the number of wins. A year like last year (Pre Nurk) and he is gone. A year like last year (with Nurk) and he stays. (of course that would mean we win more than 43)

I don't think Olshey will be fired until/unless the Blazers have several disaster seasons. Last season was on track to start that timer, but the Nurkic trade saved the season and might of course end the possibility of several disaster seasons. But if Nurkic is hurt or not as good as he looked in last year's 20 games, the rookies don't make much of an impact and the Blazers sink in the standings...that's the type of thing that will start the watch for a Neil Olshey hot seat.
