Evan Turner becomes a Blazer (2 Viewers)

Yeah, that comes with the whole dribbling thing. I just don't think that play-making from the wing was our most glaring weakness - between Crabbe and Harkless we had the SF covered. Now we have another SF who increases our play-making by a modest amount but is either a draw or downgrade at other facets of the game when compared to his counterparts.

Olshey turned the "a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush" proverb on its head - we had two birds in our hand and went for a 3rd in the bushes.
the only facet of the game Turner is a downgrade at is shooting, reading Boston fans they think he was much better at the 2 than 3, so IMO he a great fit playing with CJ and Dame so they can play off the ball and he can guard the bigger guards

What if Neil signed Turner just to trade him for Rudy Gay? that could be nice, not awesome, but nice.

He's a good fit

could be a blessing in disguise to not get Parsons
This.

I'm not down on Evan Turner. Price seems a bit high but He could be a good get for us. At the same time if Olshey is done I will be greatly disappointed.

Hrm, interesting. That must mean they're convinced someone is gone or want to make a trade or some sort.

Oh well, I can only assume the worst, so I'm going to panic.

If the trade brings us a player like Monroe, Milsap, Kanter, then that's a decent summer

good points, and good to have you back.
There seems to be a pretty dramatic misunderstanding of the new salary cap effect by some posters on this board. $17.5m/year for a top-7 rotation guy simply isn't that outrageous when the cap is around $100m. It might feel, intuitively, like it's too much... but Olshey didn't become a bad GM overnight. He's using more than intuition.

If you like Turner as a player, then I don't think that his contract should be a negative here (although it's not a screaming deal like we got on Aminu last year).

Now... as to whether we should like Turner as a player, there are three key things to the modern NBA:
  1. Perimeter shooting
  2. Defense
  3. Ballhandling/distribution
Turner is fantastic at number 3. He is pretty good at number 2. And he's been poor at number 1... at least until he shot over 50% from beyond the arc the last two months of last year.

I think that he's going to be a good addition, but there is a question of what current Blazers, if any, we are going to let walk because of acquiring him. Right now I think feel good about this and am confident he will help make the Blazers good next year and in the future.

Kevin Pelton on 1080 The Fan:

As for Parsons, he has talked about the weather being a factor and although Portland isn't the NE in the winter, it's still not very sunny during the season. I think Portland will be the better team over the next 3-4 seasons than Memphis but sometimes teams look at what has happened in the more recent past.
.

That was my concern. You got a guy who has basically only lived in Florida and Texas.....considering the move to Portland. They got in his head about the weather. Even thought the weather sucks in Memphis too.

During the season?

That would be a stupid idea considering Monroe can become a FA next summer

That's just a hypothetical between the two

I don't want either of them really. I want guys that can play defense.

I don't see who would be gone; Aminu plays best at PF, Turner at SF... It just means we're not starting Vonleh, and Hark is coming off the bench.

This is why we have discussed trading for Turner for the last few years. We needed a big guard who could also handle the ball.
In theory this move makes a lot of sense. Of course the proof is in the pudding.

Turner is a very good player, so good. BUTTTTTTTTTT, we already have a team full of very good players. Aminu, Crabbe, Harkless, Plumlee, Davis... very good, very good, all very good! What we NEED imho is a third Fantastic player. That's why I made my "A-list" thread. Turner isn't on my or anyone else's A-list. The blazers are a very good team, that just got incrementally better, but incrementally better is not good enough. So, overall, my feeling is.........

well we tried for the A-list and got shot down apparently, so ya make the best ya can from there

Hey all I can do is throw you the ally oop its up to u to catch it and dunk it

Let this season/summer be a lesson for all you participation "Im in the playoffs!!' crowd

If it makes you feel any better, we made the playoffs this year AND got the #2 pick

in the 2010 draft.

After losing the whole core before last season...this is nothin'...people were pissed about Ed Davis, Chief, Mo and Henderson last year...turned out better than anyone thought..I figure this year will be another one of those, better than we thought roster adjustments. Only one superstar won a championship this year.

"lifetime %" ?? he shot 34% from 3 last year.

And Turner shot 52% from three pointers in the last two months of the season.

It's a constant battle between sample size and recent data... but in the case of both of those guys, they aren't good three point shooters, and that's BrianFromWA's point.

OK I may be a little biased. I used to go every January for work, and the ice storms could be brutal. Over all the winters are not bad.
