The Boston Football Braves changed their name to the Redskins because it was close to the Red Sox. They didn't want to lose their indian moniker, so they made it as close to the Red Sox as possible.
Um, actually that is what I said.
Now, ask yourself what color paint did indians typically put on their face before battle? You're almost there. C'mon, you can do it!
What does that have to do with anything? Even if the name wasn't done (initially) as a slur, thats what the name is perceived by some people.
