Clearly a bad draft day for Neil.

Drafts a teenager, no vet help, and the vaunted $13 million trade exception set to expire.

No matter what Olshey does or doesn't do, people are going to be calling for his head.

"Trading for a vet? Why?! We're not close enough to competing with the Warriors to be going all in! Olshey needs to be fired!"
"Really, he's using the pick? Drafting another project player? Because our team isn't young and mediocre enough as it is? Olshey needs to be fired!"
"Geez, we're going HOW FAR into the luxury tax? What, just so we can move up for another rookie from a shallow draft? Olshey needs to be fired!"
"Well, good thing we traded Crabbe for that trade exception that he completely wasted on nothing. Olshey needs to be fired!"
"Did he seriously just trade our best shooter and second-best player? Guess we're banking on luck again! Olshey needs to be fired!"
"Wasting assets just to undo mistakes he made 2 years ago? Just to try to save PA some luxury tax money? Olshey needs to be fired!"

Your list of possible complaints about a creative Olshey trade is funny because, you see...he never trades. That's the whole complaint. He has no creativity at his job.

Clearly a bad draft day for Neil.

For years that has been the consensus board conclusion after every draft, every FA week in early July, every mid-season trade deadline...but the rose-colored glasses guys will always stall for more time and say...

"This isn't everything. He still has all summer to make moves."

"Name who you would replace him with."

"You actually did? Okay, then name the guy's new salary and belt size. Gotcha now."

"Portland is not a desirable market for free agents. The other 20 NBA small markets are just lucky. All those previous Blazer GMs were just lucky, too."

"Portland is not a desirable market for free agents. This explains why he's lousy at trading."

And if he does, it's for Gary Trent Jr.

Fire this fucking clown. Another 6'3" guard? Fuck you Olshey!
6'4.

Dude has all-star upside. Better than drafting a big man with Ed Davis upside and work ethic/attitude problems (Robert Williams).

Connaughton, Crabbe, Shabbaz, Frazier, Dame, CJ--these guys all out-performed expectations from where we got them. We either are really good at sniffing out value at guard positions, or really good at guard development, or have a system that's very guard-friendly and generates overvalue around the league, or some combination of all that.

Either way, Portland is in dire need of tradable assets (which, to be fair, can be pinned on our GM at least partly. I say partly because of the way LMA left us high and dry.) The surest path to getting another asset so late in the draft was in selecting the best guard available. So that's what we did. Hard to get mad about this. Play to your strengths.

Had we stuck to that strategy last year we might have Donovan Mitchel now instead of Collins.

Let's dream about Simons growing another couple inches. If he was 6'6, he would've been a top 5 talent.

Measured 6'1.5" barefoot, 6'3.5" in shoes, 181 lbs, 6'7" wingspan, and 8'2" standing reach by USA Basketball in October of 2017

That's only 8 months ago. He grew at age 19? I stopped growing at age 16, like most boys.

Did he wear high heels again for the later measurement?

I'm tired of this rhetoric. Lots of guys taken have "All Star upside". But only Neil Olshey took a high school student.

My tiny wrists are bigger than this kid's ankles, for fuck's sake.

We needed a 6-8 or 6-9 wing with defensive potential. He whiffed on that too with Trent.

He is completely incapable of drafting our needs. I'm convinced at this point that he just throws darts at a board and picks whatever he hits.

I take it you don’t like Anfernee “Fucking” Simons

I have nothing against him personally. But he needs at LEAST 2 years of college experience before I'm convinced. He's not the next LBJ.

I've seen his highlight clips of recent....he was going against tiny suburban white kids in some school gym somewhere, and barely beating them. I'm sure he's a great kid, but this was a pathetic pick by Olshey.

I'm starting to have some mercy for Stotts. This shit is just straight up unacceptable.

How tradeable will our asset be if he barely plays behind our two best players for his first three years?

Why can't he? There's 25mpg available at the guard spots.

No one taken below Simons has all-star upside.

You don't draft for need. Technically, we only needed a SF... there weren't many available at all.

High school student? Okay? Can he play basketball or not, that's the question. There was questions about Dames competition, and that proved to be irrelevant. So who cares about who he played against... he can shoot at an elite level, is an elite athlete and has an elite pull-up jumper for his age.

Colin Kaepernick was an athletic freak who couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with a football, and couldn't read a defense to save his life. So forgive me if I'm not sold on the athletic aspect of Simons.

But oh....he can bounce a ball and dunk it! YAY..........

You don't draft for need? Really? Well.....Olshey doesn't address our needs in FA, and waits until we're utterly desperate before he makes any trades worth a damn, so where the hell else is he supposed to get our needs from, if not the draft?

We had clear needs, and he completely whiffed on them. That is baffling, and it goes straight to the top and lands at Paul Allen's feet. The Seahags aren't gonna win 6 games this year, and they are completely incapable of drafting their biggest need: OLine. Gee....what other sports team does THAT remind you of? I see a LOT of parallels between the Hags and Portland, and it just reinforces my belief that Allen is utterly out of touch with his sports teams. If he was smart, he would have fired Olshey after he gave out those horrible contracts.

Yeah, Simons can play basketball.....like a varsity high school kid. I saw a video last night (can't find it at the moment) of him playing a game against a team with a bunch of tiny, white suburban kids, and he was SLOW and barely holding his own. And it wasn't an old video; it was made last week.

That's not encouraging. He doesn't have the size to make up for the lack of skill, so he also has that working against him.

This was a stupidly horrible pick by Olshey. If Simons is even close to starting in 4 years, I'll be surprised.

I I

How tradeable was Jermaine Oneal when he maybe played about 15mpg?
Lol bro, JO had trade value from day 1, most thought he was gonna be good/great eventually. I said in an earlier post it reminded me of the JO pick but not because their talent was equivalent, but because neither was gonna contribute for a few years, maybe never in Simons case.

I have stated my case that I don’t like NO, but at the same time shouldn’t we actually see what he does before we condemn what he does? He has in fact done some good things as the Blazers GM, he’s here for now and as a Blazer fan we should hope he does good things.
At this point we don't have much choice; we will wait awhile longer and hope somehow he finally is able to pull off a big move.

and you have seen Simons play how many times?

Dude you really use Colin Kaepernick as an example for not trusting drafting Anfernee Simons?

C'mon man.

We need a veteran, playoff-ready wing. Something that wasn't able to be addressed through the draft.

More off-base football comparisons that don't apply.

"Yeah, Simons can play basketball.....like a varsity high school kid. "... More like a top 10 player in the nation for his age.

"he was SLOW and barely holding his own. " you need to watch more of him or put on some glasses or let the saltiness fade, because he's far from slow. He had the fastest 3/4 court sprint of any guard this year.

"He doesn't have the size to make up for the lack of skill" - He doesn't have a lack of skill. Apparently he was doing stuff in pre-draft workouts that no-one else was doing.
