In general, I've been pretty consistent that this is a players league and they are paid to be ultimately responisble. If a coach could consistently make a 20 spot ranking difference, they would be worth $50m a year, if not more (I would argue more).

I feel a team of bad defenders will never be on a good defensive team, regardless of scheme. It's up to the GM, to put a roster together with quality defenders, and then it's up to the coach to come up with a scheme to fit. So they all share responsibility. I'm not mad at Kanter for being bad a defense because he's never been a good defender, we knew that when we got him.

I haven't watched enough Knicks games from last year to this year to provide an educated opinion on their roster change, minute breakdown, scheme, etc. I have seen our defensive rating range 20 spots under the same scheme though.

We have some solid defenders and we have some crappy defenders. I think it's on Stotts to not put them all on the floor at the same time. Watching him trot out Simons/CJ/Melo/Kanter at the same time makes me want to throw the remote.

I hate the 4 bad defender lineups as much as you.

I think having 2 minus defenders on the floor already puts a ton of pressure on any scheme. 3 becomes nearly impossible to hide. 4? Forget about it.

The problem is we have SO many minus defenders as our top 10 players, including our 2 best offensive players, that it's hard to come up with a rotation that doesn't have 3 bad defenders on the court at once. Nurk back and the Powell trade does change the options though.

If Thibs could turn us into one of the best offensive and defensive teams in the league and we won a title, would it be worth it?

Thibs could make us a better defensive team but there is no way in hell any of the rosters that we've had under Stotts could ever be turned into the best defensive team.

In my opinion.

Well, I pretty much agree with Stotts so I guess I'm going to need more evidence. What does "holding players accountable" mean? Is he going to go all high school coach and make them run laps if they screw up a defensive rotation? Is he going to cut their playing time? I guess, if they guy isn't particularly important to the offense like Simons or Ellis, but Kanter, Melo, Dame, CJ? Yeah, he's not going to cut their minutes. Olshey did dump Trent and Hood to bring in another serious defender, so I think that sends the message that the team is serious about improving the defensive effort. I think guys accept that they need to get better and are working to do that. So, yeah, a reporter asking Stotts if he's going to hold players accountable is kind of a meaningless catchphrase.
Well let’s see. The great coaches with championships don’t seem to think holding players accountable is simply a catchphrase. I think I would side with the all time greats instead of a mediocre coach with an all-time bad defense.

Kanter had a quote just the other week about the coaching staff holding them accountable. If we're going to buy words of other people, then you should buy Kanter's as well.

These catch phrases are meaningless.

Sure but their accountable is more accountable than his accountable.

Blazers give up 127 to the Bucks yet all I hear is "well, if the Blazers just made their shots ..." I'm so tired of the lack of accountability on the defensive front. It's embarrassing. This roster is GOOD. We shouldn't be this atrocious on that end of the floor.

I can NOT wait for a new coach next fall.

how do you let a guy go 18/18 and not make a single defensive adjustment?

how do you let your opponent's lead go from 3 to 18 and not take a single timeout?

how do you let your player keep on jacking fadeaway shots with no rhythm when he's 0/10 prior?

god damnit i need this moron gone

Who was the last coach that got fired midseason when his team was 10 games over .500?

who fucking cares? what coach who hasn't done jack shit gotten this much leeway for 9 yrs with such little playoff success?

not every decision needs precedence when solutions are so obvious

Not obvious to Olshey. Nor is it obvious to him how to build a championship contending roster.

Let's start with the root of the problem and let Stotts future hinge on the new GM.

Simmer down now. I’m asking a question.

Let me be clear - this is not 100% on Stotts. The players need to come out with more sustained energy and urgency on a nightly basis, especially now that we are about 20 games away from the end of the regular season. With that said, it's on the coach to hold the players who don't come out with that energy ACCOUNTABLE. Also, I do believe that it's a reflection on the coach that this team has played, what, three complete games from start to finish this season?

We also need a coach who is willing to adjust on the fly ... we just let Giannis, as great as he is, have a Wilt Chamberlain performance tonight. The Miami Heat literally put the blueprint out on how to stop Giannis, but Terry allowed him to work one on one all game long. It is not a coincidence to me that GA has this game tonight and Steph had his career high against us earlier this year.

The only silver lining is change is on the way if we don't meet expectations in the postseason.

Man, you write this just to write something.

If you know anything about those coaches, you would just stfu. And you most probably know, so pls, cut this crap. For disrespecting Pat I would slap you myself.

I didn't say anything negative about those coaches, I just added what Kanter said. Slap Kanter if you don't like what he said and make sure you get it on video!

Letting Melo play 27 minutes when he was shooting 0/10 when you need defensive stops is definitely not holding a player accountable.

You know, there are players, that make everybody around better. We know that.
And there are people, that make people in the team work. Pat Riley is that man. If you going to his team, you know there will be no mama's sandwiches if you don't work for them. I think it is just going down from him and at this point he don't even have to say much.

In contrary, Stotts keeps this team happy. It is going down from not keeping his stars accountable. It is going down from there.

Jackson kept Kobe first and players knew, that if he can hold Kobe, he can hold them too.

My point is, maybe you should start to write something, that actually makes sense, instead being homer just for the sake of it.
Kanter said something? Ok. We know what quote is bollocks, you know that, so why you posting crap?

I've got you calling me a homer for quoting Kanter and other people upset I don't think this team should each and every game. Tough to please everyone around here.

I didn't say one negative word about Riley, Jackson, etc. so I'm not sure what the issue is. If we could bring in those guys, I'd be all for it. I don't make the decisions when it comes to who our GM and coach is.

Or how about not having one of the shittiest defenses ever when you got personnel upgrades and the #1 goal in the offseason was improving the defense?
This too. It's unbelievable how poor the defense is this year despite the roster upgrades in that area.

At least getting out of the 1st round and being competitive after that point ... the roster is legit.

What do you mean by legit? Where do you rank our roster in terms of talent out West? What teams do you think are better?

The Lakers (healthy) are the only roster that is better. Denver and Clippers are comparable, but, when healthy, this Blazers roster is top 2-3 in the West.

This you said: "These catch phrases are meaningless." And if we check it, only meaningless phrase goes from Kanter, which came in your post, not the post you quoted.

And, btw, I would put "slap you" in a green font, but I don't see this option on the screen;)
