Costa rica is a retirement community for smart middle class white people who speak spanish. Hardly a breeding ground for young troubled teens.

Again, the opposite is true. Countries with strict gun confiscation laws have far worse or at least comparable violent crime using other weapons.

They also have far less freedoms, most being actual police states, dictatorships or governed by drug lords.

Your oft-quoted Taiwan has pretty much outlawed guns, but so have our prisons.

Both still have many murders, using the crudest of weapons.

Neither has free citizens, which is why you and your wife live in America and not Taiwan.

Violent crime in America has been steadily declining for over 50 years now. That's a fact, an indisputable fact.

I've never said my guns will stop bad people from killing people. Mental healthcare would prevent murders in many cases, which is why the neither the Dems or the Reps EVER SUPPORT EXPANDING IT.

My guns insure our Freedom from tyranny. That is the singular purpose for The Second Amendment, and it has worked like a charm since it's inception.

Considering we're a country with 320,000,000+ people of all the world's ethnicities coupled with unparalleled freedom for all it's citizens, America is quite impressively non-violent.

Still fresh in memory. He severely injured over a dozen other people. Knives and swords are the preferred method of mass murders by Asians and a google search will show you dozens of them, some with many more deaths if that is what floats your boat. 2 Taiwanese also murdered 57 people by crashing an airliner back in the 50's.

If everyone predicted it, something could of been done. That’s the sad part. Everybody made jokes about it until it became real. Obviously this kid has deeper issues. Everybody right now is too busy talking about gun control and that’s fine but the real culprit is mental health and with these shootings that occur, they both rise. It’s a real societal issue here that’s way more troubling than guns but nobody talks about it or if they do they just say the person is crazy.

There are mental issues worldwide. Or does America have something in the water?

Since I'm planning a trip to Costa Rica with my wife next year I've been researching the country and it's people and government.

When they won that Peace Prize, it had nothing at all to do with guns or crime, and at the time they had very lax gun laws.
Óscar Arias Sánchez was President of Costa Rica from 1986 to 1990 and from 2006 to 2010. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1987 for his efforts to end the Central American crisis.

Costa Rica used to be relatively peaceful, BEFORE they implemented strict anti-gun laws in 1995.

NOW...
In Costa Rica, the annual rate of all gun deaths per 100,000 population is 5.92 (2013).

The US homicide rate is 3.60 per 100,000 (2014).

So Costa Rica has nearly double as many gun murders as the US, mostly due to their strict gun laws disarming law-abiding citizens.

Despite strict gun laws, the estimated total number of guns (mostly illicit) held by civilians in Costa Rica is 400,000.

I agree completely with these 2 points.

Gun owners already are held responsible for their guns, unless stolen. However, locking them up cannot usually prevent them from being stolen.

As far as most mass shootings, many people knew the shooter was mentally off and said nothing, even professionals.

An 18-year-old student was arrested after a journal was found detailing plans to shoot his classmates at ACES High School in Everett.

According to the Everett Police Department, the 18-year-old’s grandmother called 911 Tuesday morning after finding the journal and believed the threats to shoot students at the school were credible.

Officers responded to the house on the 10600 block of Holly Drive and were shown excerpts of the journal and were told the grandson had a semiautomatic rifle stored in a guitar case. As officers reviewed the journal, they were alarmed by the statements and detailed plans to shoot students and use homemade explosives, according to a press release.

Excerpts from the journal show the teen had been thinking about the shooting frequently and wanted to make it "infamous," according to probable cause documents.

Court documents state the young man wrote, "I can't wait to walk into class and blow all those (expletives) away," and "I need to make this shooting/bombing infamous. I need to get the biggest fatality number I possible can."

Prosecutors allege the suspect had inert grenades in his bedroom that he planned to fill with black powder along with the AK-47 hidden in a guitar case.

The student attended Kamiak High School last year before transferring to ACES Alternative School this fall. Detective say he simply flipped a coin to determine which school to target. It came up ACES.

ACES High School was contacted and told about the threat. The student was arrested at the school, and a knife and marijuana were found on his person.

Mukilteo School District spokesman Andy Muntz said the teen was not on their radar, adding everyone is incredibly grateful for that grandmother's decision to turn the young man in.

"It really speaks to the importance of if you see something or hear something to notify the authorities. That's what she did. It could well have saved many, many lives including her grandson's life," said Muntz.

ACES student Olivia Fox said she was stunned at the accusations leveled against her close friend.

"There was lot of shock around the school when they released a picture of who it was," she said. "Me and a couple of his other good friends are shaken up, because we know how good of a kid he is."

KING 5 News is not releasing his name because he has not yet been formally charged.

The 18-year-old was booked at the Snohomish County Jail on probable cause for attempted murder due to planning and taking substantial steps toward executing a school shooting. The student is also facing an assault charge for allegedly kicking an officer after he slipped out of one of his handcuffs and tried to escape Tuesday.

The suspect made his first appearance in court Wednesday and is being held on $5 million bail.

His defense attorney said he has no prior criminal history whatsoever. However, police believe the teen used the same AK-47 to rob a convenience store on February 12. Court documents state he wrote in his journal about how powerful he felt because of how scared the female clerk was.

yeah...I'm retirement age...never needed to kill anyone and I own guns...owned many cars...never thought about killing anyone...for a disturbed kid to go into a rage and not be able to go home and get a gun from dad's closet is a safeguard....my wife is from a country with gun laws and this doesn't happen there...ever....there are murders but not mass murders....it's demonstrable whether you subscribe to it or not....law enforcement professionals should have the guns...I don't care to debate this issue...I don't think guns stop gun violence period

There were several common sense steps that could have prevented the kid from getting the gun. But instead of addressing those the easy answer is to ban guns.
