You guys act like local media are interested in writing stories that appeal to the .1% of Blazers fans who are CBA nerds. They want human interest stories that appeal to average fans. They want excitement about the team, players who are excited about being in Portland, and excitement about the upcoming season.
lol talk about patronizing comments....

I would bet a pretty decent percentage of season ticket holders AND sponsors are interested in knowing if ducking the tax is a primary goal for this team. I would bet a ton of fans are interested in seeing if we are making any more moves. This isn't as niched as you are implying.

When is this mythical time and place that Joe will hold another presser open to the media without another big deal being made? When has any GM called a presser to address how they plan on handling the cap? This was most of these reporters only chance to ask Joe any question in a public forum where he can't just tell them he doesn't want that question in an article. So again, when do you think they're going to get a chance to ask those questions?

Joe's agenda shouldn't matter to a good journalist. The players' feelings shouldn't matter to a good journalist unless they plan on doing some kind of player profile piece in the future which would require access to the player. Answers to pertinent questions given in a transparent forum, that they probably won't get again this season unless there are moves made at the trade deadline in over six months should be the priority for a journalist. They aren't fans, they aren't team employees and they aren't supposed to care about anything other than getting information that is important in regards to their field out to the public.
joe is taking cues from Neil. He doesn't do Q&As at all.

Because people who question narratives are on Putin's payroll. Assange especially. They don't want to end up like Assange.
Seriously man. This is a sports forum and seemingly every fucking thing you post has something about politics in it. You need to knock this shit off. People come here to talk about sports, some of us come here to get away from the divisive political discourse that you seem so hellbent on pushing... in a fucking Blazers forum. Get a grip. Find another place to express your political views. I know you've been told to stop posting them in here and I don't understand why you haven't been banned.

This has no place in a basketball forum...keep the politics in the OT section
put that poster on ignore.

I have no interest in the timing of your question....Joe would probably say, when the season tips off or when I'm damned good and ready. I know a large contingency of forum members are junkies for topics of controversy and it fuels all the speculation around here but for once..chill and listen to the new guys...being an asshole doesn't make Stephen A Smith a good reporter or Skip Bayless. All they do is stir controversy and doubt into every move made across the league. This is ..hey fans! meet your new guys! We're happy! Joe wasn't ignoring reporters. He was just encouraging

Use the IGNORE feature. Boom, he'll be gone for you.

When was the last time you saw a player introduction PC in Portland, Oregon turn into an event raking the GM over the coals about cap issues? New York, sure. The local media who want to lay into the team, like Canzano and sometimes Quick, use columns to do that.

That's why it's so important for these "journalists" to ask pertinent questions when they get a chance. I don't think most GMs give a lot of access to reporters in uncontrolled environments and that's why they should get hit with obvious questions that they haven't addressed, in these very rare pressers.

Raking over the coals to find out if we want to duck the tax? Exaggerate much?

Because people who question narratives are on Putin's payroll. Assange especially. They don't want to end up like Assange. Also, they might be called a bot if they pose a threat to the narrative and they might be banned from reddit, youtube, or twitter. Not a lot to gain from doing journalism in this land of freedom.

interesting

IIRC, you've gone political a couple of times recently and have looked ridiculous. Going for the hat-trick?

I should only have to do that when a poster is following the rules and annoying me... and I don't do it because I want to see what the discourse about this team is. He should have to follow the rules of the forum and keep that shit out of here becasue even if I ignore him, some people in here that had no intent on a political discussion will be triggered by his bullshit and reply. Should I have to ignore all of them too?

I shouldn't have to because there is a rule against this shit. If there wasn't a rule I wouldn't complain and I'd either just deal with it, put him on ignore and/or look for a different forum to discuss the Blazers and not politics.

So jounalists in New York are supposed to ask questions that the public wants answers to and so called journalists in Portland are supposed to be de facto PR for the Blazers?

it's not as trivial as he thinks it is.

For example:
The hard cap prevents us from even going after KD. Dame is on social media every day in a massive recruitment effort for KD. SI wrote a long ass article highlight Portland as a premier destination for KD. But we can't even attempt it because of the GP acquisition. Think only "CBA nerds" are interested in Joe's response to what our thought process was here?

2000+ people are on live calls with guys like Stein and Fischer every day hoping to glean nuggets on what front organizations are thinking. We finally get a chance to hear from the man itself because he doesn't do any other media sessions, and all we want to hear is how "we value heart?" gimme a break. There absolutely is an audience for this stuff.

Obvious many in here have never done sales. You work your ass off for the best deals, take what comes then reload for the next round of work. Y'all act like GMing is as simple as a video game simulation. Of course we wanted more height/length, we didn't get it but we did get better on defense overall and guys that want to grind under Chauncey.

New York is a revolving door for coaches and players and there's a big reason nobody wants to play there anymore..I forget how many teammates and coaches Melo said he had with the Knicks but they never built an identity since John Starks played there....they are a horrible harpie shrieking media zone....I want no part of that circus around the Blazers....and in New York that hasn't translated to either loyalty, stability or success...scientific method says it works against the team. They have a dozen Stephen A Smith's trying to out heckle each other there....you think that better than what we have here? I beg to differ..Guys rarely want out of Portland...they demand to get out of New York

There are lots of things that the hard cap prevents us from doing, but dealing for KD isn't one of them. You saw what they asked for from Minny. There is no permutation of Blazer assets that would equate to Brooklyn accepting a KD-to-Portland trade, hard cap or not.

Why would asking Joe (when he'll probably never be damned good and ready) to answer questions about the hard cap, the luxury tax and some follow ups about the size of our roster be considered being an asshole. The "journalists" don't have to sensationalize the topic they're asking about, they can do it politely, they don't have to scream and yell like TV personalities. What they should do is think about what the public would want them to report on and take advantage of any opportunity they get to glean information on topics of public interest. Do you get the difference between good journalism and shilling?

we have to come up with 35.2 mil of contracts for salaries to match. we don't currently have a combination of tradeable contracts that add up to that amount, while also meeting the roster size minimum and staying under the apron (after subsequent additions).

Your second point notwithstanding, the same issue applies for ben simmons trades as well.

Neither has Joe. Not a great look for a GM.

Sure...so you get the difference between an introductory media session and a media session discussing firing a GM? Timing......and showing some respect to the new players matters..you can actually write to the team yourself on their hompage and express your disappointments or ask your questions. I think fishing for holes in their game plan is a waste of time personally ..and for the record....I'm not a fan of most Portland sports coverage at all...not a lot of talent in that group from what I've seen....I trust Casey for updates more than any of the others. He answers any questions I have pretty much when he can. I don't trust the youtube crowd to be the voice of reason though and they're a loud crowd

Regardless, the hard cap should have been asked about. The luxury tax should have been asked about. This definitely felt like Joe addressing the media about his offseason moves and I think both of those things fall well under the purview of offseason moves. I also think there should have been some followup questions about roster construction, especially the lack of size on the roster. Those definitely aren't dickish questions and wouldn't have to come across as accusatory or critical but it wouldn't be bad journalism if they did. Honestly I think they were basic due diligence that for some reason the people covering our team consistently neglect.

I also don't like to see new players like Grant and Payton have their introductions to the franchise mucked up with a bunch of doubt aimed at Joe for his offseason...this is not the interview for tough questions....those are for after a loss post game interview. This was about the guys who are buying into the team....not the reporters who want to bitch about the guys we brought in....Drew doesn't need to hear Quick say he's not a big enough center....he needs to be asked questions that are about him and his feelings about being here...not some media hack throwing doubt at his size.
The last thing I'm interested in is what we do with Bledsoe's contract....that'll be common knowledge soon enough..didn't need to be aired at a player introduction interview period.
I had more or less the same thought. It's a press conference for the players, not the franchise.

or how about this basic one?

Is an extension going out to Dame and will he sign?

Does that fall under the tenet of FA only questions?

I actually don't see any difference from a journalistic standpoint. Their job is to inform the people. This press conference was not only to introduce these players but Joe also made it about recapping the offseason. So why would there be a reasonable expectation that there would be another time to ask about the hard cap, ask about the luxury tax or ask about Bledsoe's contract being stretched? These guys can email Joe all they want but that likely won't get an answer and if it does, it doesn't happen in front of the public.

It was rude for whoever that was to ask Grant the question about not being the number one option anymore in the manor that they did. It wouldn't be rude after congratulating the players on being Blazers or getting their new contracts to take the very rare opportunity to publicly address other offseason questions.

Maybe you have knowledge of another presser coming up where Joe will be there and ask for open questions from the media. I'm just not aware of when the next time that will happen will be.

If he was asked about the tax, he'd have likely pointed out that we're currently over the tax, that Jody is committed to spending to win I'd we can win. And people would have flamed him for it.
Or, he could say hey, we're currently in the tax, so obviously Jody is ok with it, but if we start to suck, then why pay the tax for a loser? And people would have flamed him for it.

Agree with this; should have two separate news conferences.

I don't have a problem with Joe getting flamed. I actually like the way he's addressed everything. I don't think the reporters there asking questions should be concerned with how they'll make Joe look as long as they ask them respectfully. I get why Joe wouldn't want the questions asked, I just don't get why they weren't asked.

Do you honestly think they will have another? I mean, if that press conference has been set up and the reporters know about it, then this all makes sense. I just seriously doubt they're planning on having that presser.

i mean... Public and media relations is a part of the job, no? we want to treat him with kid gloves now? I would bet anything Olshey woulda been killed universally for the "heart" comment.
