Why did this kid get a gun though.. I've been asking myself "why" a lot the last 24 hours and it always comes back to that for me. He shouldn't have had access.
I don't know the details. But I could gain access to everything in the house I grew up in. My parents didn't realize it, but I knew everything. That's what kids do.

Were you really locked out of stuff that you couldn't have gained access to in your house when you were 17? Even if you REALLY wanted to?

I didn't have any weapons in my house growing up. Our hunting rifles and ammunition were kept in a safe at my grandparents house (where any hunting would occur). That isn't the point!

You didn't answer the question. Why did this kid get a gun? He shouldn't have had access.

Obviously we had kitchen knives and hammers, etc. but none of those things can kill like a gun.

If you want to look at the numbers they are actually on the very low end of deaths for small children.

500 American kids per year are deliberately killed by their own parents.

Last year there were 49 shooting deaths at schools, the vast majority of which were gang related deaths outside of school hours.

These shootings are horrible. Particularly young innocent children like yesterday and Sandy Hook. And I think more needs to be done to protect our kids at school.

But we need to get realistic about what there is political will to actually accomplish or we'll continue doing nothing.

How can we remove every opportunity? You want me to list all of the ways kids can get guns?

That's the point I'm trying to make. There are hundreds of millions of guns in this country and there isn't the political will to change that.

Hundreds of millions are not registered.

There are literally dozens of ways for a kid to get guns. This kid was old enough to buy rifles. That's the law, and I don't think that's going to change in Texas.

I understand some people think guns can go a way, but 1/3 of Americans own guns. Another 1/3 could see themselves owning a gun. Only 30-35% would never own a gun.

So I don't see how guns are going anywhere. So 18 year old kids are going to have access to them... Even if we say they shouldn't.

Then again, you could have said that about gay rights, or women voting, or any number of other things where there was not the political will to do it, until one day there was.

Giving up is always an option, but it's not always the best option.

I'm not holding out a lot of hope, but I am holding out some hope that the tide will turn here, sooner or later.

We obviously can't remove every opportunity, but I would rather take me chances with someone getting a 3d printed gun from the dark web compared to any 18 year old going down to the street to any of these and picking up multiple weapons.

That map seems a bit sparse. There are 8600 licensed gun dealers in Texas, at least according to this.

Yeah, not surprising. That was a quick google search, and I think it's still too many.

Untrue. Prohibition doesn't work. In either case.
No, it’s true. The statement is true. Does it work? That’s not the statement. But it is the same people who want to ban abortions to stop abortions and then say you can’t ban guns to stop shootings

Yeah, I'm perfectly fine with raising the age of gun ownership. I just don't think it's likely to happen. And I don't think it would make a difference if it did.

Most kids can get anything they want from their parents. Especially if they are willing to kill them, as seems to be a common theme in these school shootings.

Yep. Because people are getting desperate and fear what is happening with our fringe right lunatics. It’s perfect for gun lovers. “You’ll need guns to protect yourselves!” “Uh from who?” “Us!” Ok, better run out and get a gun

The Federal Uniform Drinking Age of 1984 was passed. Why, in this 1st world country, can we not pass The Federal Uniform Firearm Age of 2022. Bump it up to 21 at the very fucking least?!?

3D printers are not that common. It's not something most people have access to.

Damn, some of those guns shops are right next to others.

You have to wait till 21 to drink or smoke, why not for a gun?

I'm not suggesting giving up though. I'm suggesting getting something done that could actually help before the next time a classroom full of grade schoolers is gunned down...
Those issues were about protecting rights, not restricting them. I think that's a big difference.

And in uncertain times people tend to want to expand gun rights, not restrict them...

The 2nd ammendment gets in the way here. There is no right to alcohol... And 18 year olds are considered legal adults...

Exactly my point. I'm half tempted to try and see how hard it is to print a 3d gun, because I bet it's a lot more difficult that filling out the the paperwork to grab a glock at a pawn shop.

I'd prefer a gun having to wait until your 25.
