Blazer's need a defensive leader. I've said this for a long time. Someone who is going to direct people where to go on defense and not be afraid to call guys out. When I'm watching these last 3 games and the preseason ones, Zach is the only guy that is actually in the correct defensive position on every possession. I wish he would talk more.
None of the other guys, particularly the guards, play defense as a first priority. They only know how to switch a basic screen and roll. When guys on the weakside need to switch off ball because someone is running around the perimeter it always takes him a few seconds before the rotation happens. When teams are running in transition no one goes to pick up their man, because they all expect someone else to. Instead of recognizing that they are on a fast break, taking initiative by picking up the nearest guy, and telling your teammate to go run to the guy in the corner everyone just kind of jogs backwards expecting the other guys to know exactly what they should do. When there is a double screen, forget about it, two guys run towards the ball while an opponent flares to the corner or the angle. Everyone is so focused on what they're gonna do on the next offensive possession.
Individually we don't even have bad defenders. They all play isolation defense pretty well. They can make reads in the passing lanes, we have shot blockers. But they don't play as a unit, they need to TALK.
