PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Brandon Roy has no reservationsabout building on a solid rookie season.


Roy scored a career-high 32 points and LaMarcus Aldridge added18, leading the Portland Trail Blazers to a 91-82 victory overthe Dallas Mavericks on Saturday.


In his NBA Rookie of the Year campaign last season, Roy averaged16.8 points per game. Since being limited to just seven pointsin a season-opening loss to San Antonio, the former Universityof Washington standout has averaged 23.4 since, scoring 22 ormore in four of his last five games.


"He's back to being the guy that won him rookie of the year,"Aldridge said. "He's playing well and consistent. When he'slike that, he opens it up for everyone else."


Roy shot 5-of-6 from the arc - including hitting four of hisfive attempts in the second half - and finished 11-of-17 fromthe field.


The effort ended a long streak of futility against theMavericks, a team that had defeated the Blazers 13 straighttimes. Dallas had not lost to Portland since a 97-88 defeat onDecember 23, 2003.


"A huge win for this team," Roy said. "We said this is astatement game for us. We wanted to play with a big effort.They have beaten us 13 straight times and we didn't want to godown 14."


However, it was the Blazers' defense that keyed this victory,holding the high-scoring Mavericks 25 points below theirseason-scoring average. During their three-game homestand, theyhave held New Orleans, Memphis and Dallas all under 100 points- three teams that rank in the top half of the NBA in scoring.

"I think every game we have won, it has started on the defensiveend," Aldridge said. "When we play defense like that, it makesour offense come to us. Our defense is getting better andthat's what makes everything click for us."


Dallas, which entered the game shooting with a 50.4 field goalpercentage, shot just 35 percent (29-of-82) from the field.

"It was a little bit of both tenacious defense and poorshooting," Mavericks forward Josh Howard said. "They had a gooddefensive scheme sending three guys and all. We didn't makeshots, that's it. We have a another game coming up soon, so wemove on."


Perhaps the best example of Portland's defense was the job itdid against Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki. After he scoredseven points in the opening quarter, last season's MVP couldonly manage four more points on 1-of-10 shooting.


"They were front and back on him and we just didn't make thedefense pay," Mavericks coach Avery Johnson. "We didn't makegood reads tonight. There was no trick defense out there thatwe've never seen. It's just all about execution."

Travis Outlaw recorded 14 points and 10 rebounds to record hisfirst double-double of the season for the Blazers, who improvedto 3-0 at home this season.


Howard had 20 points and seven boards for the Mavericks, who sawtheir three-game winning streak come to an end.
