I did not interpret the question as Winston Smith and the rats. My interpretation was more like, what would you not compromise? Because unless you're a hermit on a mountaintop somewhere, we all do have to compromise. We all have to earn a living, live in an organized society, and so on. And it means swallowing things that we just don't like and/or just don't think is right. I was recently faced with such a choice. And had to make a tough decision. To me the question is, what value would you NOT compromise, even if it means paying a price? I have lost jobs because I openly objected to employer's racial comments and "jokes". And I needed the jobs. But not at the price of silence in the face of bigotry, or pretending to go along with it. Belief in human equality is my core value. That's what I won't compromise.
