Amen. I love the book of Matthew. I think with that one book alone you can address the entire human condition.

Completely Agree...We as citizens and a nation would be a lot stronger if we all bought into the word. The further this nation/world moves away from God, the weaker more vulnerable it gets.

yeah..I agree. It does trouble me, but as ABM has before pointed out, it has been foretold in prophesy. I do believe that this is Gods will. How else can so many be so blind? Once again, look at the book of Matthew.

If I had to face the Julia/1984 test of a rat gnawing on my face, which value would I still cling to? My sons and hope for their well-being. I feel it in my bones, and I suppose evolution has seen to that.

I've got some other values I think are rock solid. But I haven't had to test those. I've never had a gun put to my head and been told I will die unless I betray the values I think I hold dear, so I feel a little dishonest saying I'd never do it. Look at the genocides and ethnic cleansing in Rwanda or Germany, look at what the Japanese did in China....not all those soldiers were evil. A lot of really good people have done bad things out of fear and stupidity and anger.

Maybe I have a second value--a belief that in our day-to-day lives people are actually a lot more benign and even good than we think we are, and when fear/stupidity/anger comes in we are nearly all much, much worse than we think we are. Over time, the few who can cling to their values in the face of fear/stupidity/rage are the ones we should admire.

I did not interpret the question as Winston Smith and the rats. My interpretation was more like, what would you not compromise? Because unless you're a hermit on a mountaintop somewhere, we all do have to compromise. We all have to earn a living, live in an organized society, and so on. And it means swallowing things that we just don't like and/or just don't think is right. I was recently faced with such a choice. And had to make a tough decision. To me the question is, what value would you NOT compromise, even if it means paying a price? I have lost jobs because I openly objected to employer's racial comments and "jokes". And I needed the jobs. But not at the price of silence in the face of bigotry, or pretending to go along with it. Belief in human equality is my core value. That's what I won't compromise.

Well said... I had a feeling that many would assume I was posting something to troll a religious debate (probably because of my answer, but it's the truth). But this is far from a religious one. All walks of life have moral values that they will not give up.

I agree that the ones admired are ones that stick with their compass; even if it means losing their life.

Everyone keeps bringing up their children but that's not the question so....Idk man, I guess I theres not much i wouldn't do, so I guess torture would be the line I wouldn't cross
