That's a false dichotomy that you are setting up there.

Portland could be spending $200M is salary & still have a lotto level team.

Just because they 'spend money' doesn't mean that they are any better. Also, if they make a move to duck the tax - it doesn't mean that they are not committed to winning.

The moves we're talking about here are minor and will not move the needle.
I kinda agree with both of you.

Unprotecting our pick with Chicago and using Bledsoe's contract to attach multiple assets and go after a star, would've been a way to show they're willing to do whatever it takes. There's been a ton of examples of teams doing this in recent years including Minnesota with Rudy Gobert and Atlanta with Dejounte Murray the past week.

Would going for it like that lead to a contender? Maybe not, but by hard capping themselves they basically rule out even the possibility of that being an option.

Now, maybe that's smart not to risk the future on an all-in move. If they duck the tax in this particular situation to me it does signify that they were never really interested in trying to go all-in. That could be the correct decision, but it's still letting financial decisions affect basketball decisions.

this is my biggest problem. And it should not be a case when there are already 13-15 teams who have a higher payroll than you. It's not like we have the highest tax payment in the league and want to reduce a substantial burden.

This league has proven that you pay to win, and pay to acquire/retain assets. If we don't value that but rather go penny pinching for profit-sharing payments from other tax paying teams, Dame needs to ask out tomorrow (and he would be fully justified in doing so).

Regardless, it's a reflection of priorities. As a fan why should i care? And if you're including Bledsoe, you would have to attach an asset like a future pick or Keon. We want to give that up for Jody to save $? Of course that upsets me, and it should upset someone like Dame.

That's why i don't get why she doesn't just sell the Fkn team. Is there a time frame they must wait on? It's been reported she has no desire to run an NBA or Sports team. PA would be pissed at the idea of not trying to win or compete for a Title. WTF is she doing?

Aaron Fentress was saying she has like 3 more years before they have to sell.

She's also trying to find a loophole to that. Though that could be just posturing so they don't get lowballed by people knowing they have to sell.

I'm pretty sure she was refuting reports of any specific timeline. She even said that it could take 10-20 years to unload everything in the trust. That seems like her giving herself anywhere from 2028-2038 to sell the Blazers and Seahawks.

She could have realized that she likes being a big part of professional sports or she's showing that there is no deadline and therefore taking away an upperhand potential buyers may have been saying they had.

What is she doing? Probably waiting for the TV deal and removing leverage from buyers. Basically, she's willing to wait to get a few hundred million or billion more.

I get what you are saying, but I just don't think that's a sound strategy. Probably 90% of the posters here know that in 2025 the NBA will be operating under a new group of media rights deals including potentially massive streaming rights packages

It's known and the sale price of a sports team will always factor projected future earnings. Anybody willing to pony up 2B for the Blazers will know the scope of those media projections backwards and forwards. They won't be surprised. Neither will the seller

She needs to be asking herself "What would Paul want?"

This deal is never going to be official.

... and that's how the Blazers go around the hard cap issue. It is also how they can play 6 players as the Nate McMillan Blazers once tried to do. Genius

But if they aren't getting the offers they want they are better off to wait for the offers to come up. If there is no rush to sell the team, why do it until you get an offer you can't refuse?

If Sharpe is the next Michael Jordan they might feel like they'll get the full $3 bil.

I hope Grant is better bc I remember during the okc series we were letting him shoot all day

It’s Official Now:

The Portland Trail Blazers have acquired forward Jerami Grant and the draft rights to Ismael Kamagate from the Detroit Pistons in exchange for the draft rights to Gabriele Procida, a 2025 first-round draft pick (via Milwaukee), a 2025 second-round draft pick and a 2026 second-round draft pick, the team announced today.

So no information on why the delay in completing the trade?

He averaged 8 shots a game that series. He shot 50% from the field, 45% from 3. Maybe we shouldn't have been letting him "shoot all day"

considering the bledsoe waiving news came just prior, it seems pretty transparent that they were trying to squeeze him into the deal in some manner, but were unable to do so.

no extension for JG either it appears.
if i remember correctly can't extend at least until December I believe

there was an "extension plus sign" possibility that some of us were discussing earlier that would have extended his deal for two years that might have required us to wait until July 1.

he can get a 4 yr, 112 mil extension 6 months from today.

2 things to note here:

1.) There wasn't an extend and trade, so that means Grant thinks he can get more than 22.5M per year, or wants a longer deal at the very least.

2.) Today is the first day Dame is eligible to sign his 2 year 100M extension.

You can just see it coming, can't you?
