12. This could be random, but nearly a half-dozen executives from different teams mentioned the possibility of the Spurs luring LaMarcus Aldridge in free agency with a max contract.
Let me be clear, my beloved Portland maniacs: I do not see this happening. Repeat: I do not see this happening. Aldridge isn’t the type to say stuff lightly, so it meant a lot — to everyone — when he declared so emphatically in July that he would sign a new five-year contract this summer and hopefully go down as the “best Blazer ever.”
It’s always wise to take sunny public comments about free agency with a pile of salt, but Aldridge is a bit of a different cat in this regard. Still: I found it interesting that after having heard very little San Antonio/Aldridge talk of any kind, ever, a bunch of unconnected higher-ups suddenly started mentioning it over the last two weeks. Someone said something to start the rumor mill churning, and the Blazers have always considered one of Aldridge’s home-state Texas teams the biggest threat to snag him away.
San Antonio waited on a Kawhi Leonard extension precisely to hoard max cap space this summer in case both Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili retire. Dallas could have max-level space, though it’d have to renounce several very good free agents to get it. Houston would need to cut some salary, but it also has the goods to put together a solid sign-and-trade offer if Aldridge makes it known he’d prefer to go there.
This is probably much ado about very little. Aldridge is in a wonderful spot as the co-centerpiece of a top team, with a superstar point guard, a smart coach/GM combo, and a nucleus of prime-age veterans — most of whom are also free agents the Blazers could re-sign this summer via Bird rights. Portland can offer him one more year and about $30 million more than any other suitor.

Not really news to us, and it wouldn't be a thing until July anyway, but thought you'd like to see it, as (as Lowe said) this is really the first time there have been (if you believe him) "team execs" talking about LMA to a specific team

This must be sad news for Aldridge haters. Especially those that clamour to Duncan, Pops and the epic franchise we call the Spurs.

Why would they want such a low efficiency scorer like Aldridge?! Haha

If LA leaves this summer after saying he will stay long term, he will become one of the most hated players in Portland history. Don't think he wants that.

But we will have caproom to recuperate in a hurry if he fucks us over

4 or 5 team "executives" see a "possibility"

how many executives does each team have? we are talking about maybe 5% of the executives in the league that think there is maybe a 1% chance LMA goes somewhere else.

quick, give them a poll on when lillard will become a laker

Because Popovich would turn him into a Hall-of-Famer like Duncan? :dunno:

Excellent point.

Even better point.

We don't have to worry, I thought handshakes where written in stone.

Why would LA go to SA? Parker will be an old 33 in May. Other than Kawhi Leonard the team is not attractive.

Dallas will always worry me though. Parsons, Chandler, Ellis, Rondo and LA would be interesting. (With Dirk coming off the bench)
The questions is can they afford them all. If Ellis ops out they will be around 33 million this summer but will still have to re sign Ellis, Chandler, and Rondo. I can't see that happening along with LA too. But none the less they will have cap flexibility.

Aldridge would be a great system player in San Antonio. They are proven winners and its a matter of where can he win multiple rings? With Dame and Wes in Portland? Or with the usual suspects in San Antonio.

I think in San Antonio, he'd have a higher chance to win a ring, just due to the system and he'd have a few years with Parker, Duncan, Ginbili as well as having a core there as well.

I think he stays in Portland though. I hope so.

You think Pop and Ginobili stay if/when Duncan goes? Ginobili's 38 next summer.

Pop said several times that when Duncan retires, he retires.

I thought I read somewhere that Pop was going to retire when Duncan retires.
Pop said several times that when Duncan retires, he retires.

He wasn't exactly serious though. He also made promises to Manu and Parker that he'd stick around through their contracts as well. I think Parker has something like 4 more years? But after that he's probably gone.

I see the spurs going after both LMA and Gasol, they might get one of them but both at the moment are very happy with their teams. It would take something big for either to not resign. I wont' worry about this until after the season is over.

I won't even worry about it then. I have no doubt that Lamarcus isn't going anywhere.

My guess as to LaMarcus's order of priority:

1. Money
2. Money
3. Chance for a Ring
4. His Legacy
5. Going Home

The first four favor the Blazers.

After he retires, he can spend the next 40 years in Texas. What's the rush?

I'm still sort of moved by your "My word is stronger than Oak" thing.

- Jerry Maguire
"You were in the lobby...with the black fella."

I love that movie.

Pop said several times that when Duncan retires, he retires.

I bet both Pop and Duncan would rethink there decision (At least for another year) if Aldridge came to SA though. It would be like David Robinson & Tim Duncan all over again.

If this holds true, we can offer the most money so he'll be staying put. ;)

I hope that doesn't happen, because frankly I think he's done just about everything this franchise and its fanbase could have ever asked of him. If he leaves I won't be happy, but to go ring hunting with Popovich would be awfully tempting and it would be hard to fault him for it.

This is how I feel. He's a grown adult and makes his own decisions, why would you boo him for signing elsewhere? If he wants to be closer to home and closer to family, then by all means, do what makes you happy.

Now, if he did what Carmelo did.... There's a right way and a wrong way to do it.
