Hateful anti-gay laws passed in Russia

Who will be the gay Jesse Owens?

Nobody is going to boycott the Olympics.

That's what I was thinking. It made a much greater statement in history to bring our full Olympic team to Nazi Germany then it would have if we had boycotted it.

Bring Greg Louganis, Dick Buttons and other openly gay announcers to broadcast also and dare the Russians to do something.

Likely not, but Russia does need to say that no athletes will be arrested for being gay. If not, then I think the Boycott needs to happen. I can't see Putin not assuring that gay athletes will be permitted to compete in safety. If not, it's just like going to compete without Black Americans.

NPR had a story last night about Russian leadership doing that already..much ado about nothing

Wait a tic...Dick Buttons is gay?

Well I wouldn't say about nothing, sure, the ban is unlikely, but the topic is serious and Russia should be roundly mocked and under-patronized till they get their heads out of their asses. Regardless of an organized boycott, I personally am much less likely to buy Russian goods till their laws change.

I have more concern, and take far more serious, a nutball in communist Korea declaring war on th US..

umm commies arent the enemy anymore, its the TERRORISTS!

fucking squares man, always trying to make me conform to their castrated ideology. a nation of mamas boys with cloth wallets and no show socks

that aint cool man

I love it when "christians" parrot the views of radical Islam.

Anybody who can't grasp the difference between "living your faith" and "forcing your faith on others" isn't worth trying to reason with.

exactly. But remember, these are small gov't/freedom lovers

KingSpeed, I'm glad you started this thread; it seems some thoughtful posters were unaware. Even anti gay posters (with one exception) don't think people should get 10 years for a different opinion.

GOD, sorry, you got it wrong when you say a country can make its own laws as long as they don't infringe the rights of other countries' citizens. So it's OK for Russia to throw their own gays and supporters in prison, for South Africa to rape their own lesbians, for Uganda to execute their own gays as long as they don't arrest/rape/kill foreigners? Would that apply to Nazi Germany? Would they have the right to massacre their own Jews, just not the Dutch and Polish and Russian Jews? Up to a point, yes, countries of course have the right to make their own laws, but there is also a Universal Declaration of Human Rights and when a countrys laws violate basic human rights it is no longer just their business.

MarAzul of course is not on the list of thoughtful posters; he can't be troubled to read the original article, facts are as unattainable to him as English grammar. Trying to explain to MarAzul is a waste of energy; I'd far rather spend my time on something more productive, like explaining particle physics to my cats.

I think this is the key, here. Russia essentially needs to be shamed into publicly admitting that their own laws will be ignored in order to facilitate international visitors and competition. Force them to choose between maintaining their position or maintaining relevance in the world community. If they acknowledge that their "law" isn't worthy to be universally applied, then they basically admit that it shouldn't exist at all.

The U.S. is only one generation past the same homosexuality laws. We're only 100 years past Saudi Arabia not letting women vote. We're only 400 years past the Taliban's system of religion having totalitarian control over every facet of political and cultural power.

I always find it strange that conservatives feel so loyal to the past, yet want wars with any country similar to our recent past.

Which party are you referring to? 100 years ago; the democrats were the Conservative party.

Heh heh! I bet you know as much about particle physics as your cat. We both know why that would be a short lesson.

I will say you could fill in for the woman at the well with Jesus though. (John 4)

The conversation would be about the same and very short.

Jesus, "Go call your husband".
Woman, "I have no husband"
Jesus, "I know" (leaving out the part about having had five)
Woman, "I perceive you are a prophet"
Jesus, " No prophet skills needed" (No hint of a common law husband detected nor any spiritual need for marriage detected, sort of like the cat)

Every time I see one of those staged photos of Putin, shirtless out in the wilderness, I think to myself, "Man, is that guy ever in denial."

Yeah, maxie, like the antigay protesters in France. They are protesting marriage equality, which has already passed. They are all young males. They have adopted as their symbol the pink scarf. They protest in tight crotch outlining shorts, no shirts, and pink scarves. One of them disrupted the French Open wearing a pink unitard and angel wings. Had someone shown up at Parade like that everyone would say cool costume. They have posed (in tight crotch outlining shorts and no shirts) with their legs wrapped around each others. As gay blogger John Aravoisis says, they are the gayest antigay protesters in history.

Looks like we can kiss off these games. The gay gang is going to turn the games into a minor side show for their own agenda.

Oh well there is alway sailing, men in tights or tutus don't do that one.

I think I misspoke. Lets me change what I said to what I mean. It is absolutely not ok for any nation to to do any of the sexist homophobic, racist and assholeic things you mentioned, or many others.

However, we as a people can't fight every battle every time. We pick and choose, regardless of the righteousness, some battles to take on and some to gloss over. One of he main criteria is, do their unjust laws harm Americans. So, with regards to the anti-LGBT laws in Russia, if that impacts us directly (some of our athletes can't compete without risk of incarceration) we have to boycott. But if no risk exists for athletes, it's still a major deal, but we aren't forced to boycott. That doesnt mean athletes who win shouldn't use their platform to talk about the injustices, or that you and I shouldn't drink Gray Goose instead of Stolichnaya Vodka.

Thank you for calling me out, I may still not go a far as you would appreciate, but at least I was able to clarify.

If we had an all out ban on anything coming from every nation that treated a portion of its population like shit, there are very few nations whose goods we could still buy. Oh, and by the way, I think we would also have to ban ourselves.

My point is, this is the real world. Try and make some gains in some places and call it a day. We can't build our society around perfection.
