I wonder why Khan felt the need to rush this by trading Miller... was Batum getting antsy not playing for France?

When he could've just waived them June 30?

Now, he has 2 2nds, a Darko amnesty and maybe Ellington down the tubes so he can offer Nic a dream that PA is going to stand in the way of.

I think you guys are talking yourself into Batum. Read some of your earlier posts about how much you claimed he was worth. It's comedy gold! I really am hoping Kahn has a huge offer out there for Batum and you guys match...for a guy who doesn't even want to play there. Let's go!

I've thought for awhile that he's an 8-9 million a year player and I was surprised they didn't work out some kind of extension that both he and the team could live with ... and then it became apparent that they wanted the cap flexibility this summer to at least try for a "homerun" sort of player which ended up being the failed attempt at Hibbert, coming away empty, it's not really that big of a deal that he's going to be making 2+ million a year more than I would have though reasonable ... looking at the rest of the league it's to be expected when a player hits free agency.

Probably. If they instead waived Miller Batum would have to wait 7 more days.

Yeah. It's kinda like how you're paying big bucks for your #1 player, who apparently is growing frustrated.

He doesn't care if he plays in PDX or not. He said he won't be upset if he returns to PDX. I would prefer the S&T, but I think it's pretty obvious that Olshey/PA is going to match. If they don't match then it was a mistake not to do the S&T if it still got them the cap room they would have and some draft picks. But it looks like they are going to match. Why be mad?

Canzano with a subtle shot at Jaynes...

He doesn't play the 'get the word out from agents' like some others in the market do, I don't play that"

Yep. Funny stuff. Olshey is a fucking marketing machine.

Glad we kept JJ's Bird rights. I think he'll be good.

I don't understand why they didn't waive Miller and trade Webs. More space now (5.7 vs. 5.1), more $ for Nic (10.1 to start instead of 9.5), lower $ for NOH to pay in guaranteed salary and cap hit, and you could set Nic up with 4/43 w/out waiting for Ellington

David Khan on other possible FA acquisitions: talking to the agents every day, a matter of maintaining communication, about time frame and cap room. Being honest and upfront as possible.

Khan on Batum, and commitment on contract: we see Nic as similar to Chase Budinger, young vet who would grow with Ricky and Kevin. Dynamic wing, defends multiple positions, 3P% improved every year, missing piece for our team. Very clear on the fact that this is RFA, but hopeful. Says if Batum was a UFA, they'd have him by now.

Someone got some 'splainin to do...

@BlazerFreeman: Kahn says Batum has not yet signed an offer sheet but will Sunday at 5 p.m. eastern.

Ah, unlike Jaynes/Haynes, he clearly states that there is a huge difference between UFA and RFA.

Probably has to sign the new offer sheet with the trade kicker that the agent probably came up with.

While I agree Batum isn't worth this kind of money, we have to match to maintain our talent level unless we get a very workable trade. Letting him walk with what's left over of free agents is not smart.

Yep. Batum is the best wing in free agency, especially now, and you gotts ta pay to play.

David Khan on Why go through with it if Portland will match?: When you make a commitment, you go through with it. Don't make a commitment and then break it. You have to follow through.

48hrs to clear waivers. Offer Sunday.

Waivers are a temporary status for players who are released by their team. A player released July 1 to August 14 stays "on waivers" for seven days. A player released between August 15 and June 30 of the following year stays on waivers for 48 hours. The waiver period includes Saturdays and Sundays. During the waiver period other teams may claim the player and assume his contract. If no team has claimed the player before the end of the waiver period, he is said to have "cleared waivers." The player's contract is terminated and he becomes a free agent. The only way to terminate a contract early (other than with an ETO -- see question number 57) is through the waiver process.

must be waiting on something else

Canzano thinks people on Twitter from Minnesota are a little slow.

He did mention that he has to explain things reaaaally slow for Wolves fans.

And this is coming from JC!

That sounded like it may have been regretfully painful.
