I think it's too late since once the offer sheet is signed; our cap hold is the entire amount until we decide to match or let go.

Actually, Portland can make moves utilizing cap space until the deal is matched, so they are good

I think it's the opposite, the amount sits in Minnesota books until we decide to match. Blazers have until they decide to match to use up their remaining cap space. One reason why Blazers didn't have Hibbert officially sign the offer, so they wouldn't have his contract on their books and not be able to make signings.

Oh well I hope we make moves quickly. I have no idea who we can offer a contract to.

What's the reasoning behind the physical? Didn't he play almost the entire season for you guys last year and leave healthy? Is it just a precautionary thing?

We need to make sure he hasn't hurt anything since last season. You never know, he could have been playing a lot of DDR.

I would guess the insurance underwriter might insist on a physical before taking on the risk?

like they did when Roy failed to meet their risk assessment value and then PA said NAH UH! WE DON"T CARE! SIGN HIM ANYWAY!

"The Blazers are screwed if they match, but a great deal for the Wolves if we're lucky enough to land Batum"

I’m a restricted free agent,” Batum said. “I know the situation. Anywhere I sign, the Blazers are going to match. But my first choice was, and is, Minnesota. That’s where I want to play and that’s where I want to put my family. I’ve got nothing against the fans (in Portland) and nothing against the city. But this is a basketball decision and basketball wise, I want to be there. Last year, they impressed everybody, and that’s what I respect. To have a great young point guard like (Ricky) Rubio, and a great coach like (Rick) Adelman, I really liked that project. And I think they think I’m the missing piece at small forward. That’s what they told me.

You're going to pay a guy who doesn't want to be in Portland $11.5mil/yr?:crazy:

He's either wroth $11.5mil or he's not. Where he wants to play is irrelevant.

It's pretty simple really, but we will all try to dumb it down, once again, for you

Nic was unhappy in Portland because of his role in the offense

Portland will have an entirely new offense this year

If for some reason Nic still would prefer not to be here, Portland can trade him because his salary really isn't that horrible.

15% trade kicker. Nic just made these comments a week ago. Has something changed that we all don't know about? He's excited about the players and coaching in Minny...read it yourself. I don't think he's excited about that in Portland. He will absolutely be disgruntled and won't be happy if PA matches.

Wait 'til we match. His tune will completely change.

This is all part of a negotiation. You can't really be that ignorant, can you?

Batum wants the most money he can get. If he can't get a signed offer sheet from Minne, then Portland gives him $8-9 million/season, MAX. If he comes out and says my heart is in Portland, but Minne is offering the most money, you think that helps him get the most money possible? No, it doesn't. So he has to do what he has to do to lure a team to giving him the most money, then Portland matches. He gets more money than if he'd have negotiated straight-up with Portland.

Common sense and the first rule in Contract Negotiation 101. I do the same thing with the company's I deal with on a routine basis. And every single time, whoever wins our business, that's who I "wanted" to work with, and we make it work and have a great business relationship. Until it's time to re-negotiate.

And he told our local beat writer something complete different. Again, Negotiation 101, baby.

A week from now, he'll be saying that he appreciated the opportunity Minne presented, he liked the coach, the team, management, and he would have been happy joining Minne. But he's back in Portland, where he started his career, and now he's excited to take that next step and help Portland get back to the playoffs.

From what I've read, trade kickers are now paid by the team trading the player away, which ultimately doesn't make it any harder for us to trade him away. For a different team? Maybe, because their owner might not want to pay to send a guy away. But if we had a good trade lined up, Paul loses a few million and we send him packing. It's better that it doesn't go to the receiving team, because then options to trade him would be more difficult.

You think Paul Allen cares about a trade kicker? He consistently bought draft picks for $3 million on draft day like it was candy. Everything else was said I think was said to get Minnesota to offer him that deal.

I couldn't agree with you more about him being more excited about playing in Minnesota. But to say he will be disgruntled here is stupid, since he and his agent don't know what the situation will be.
