A. I'll be happy if the Blazers match. It's more than I would have liked to spend on Nic, but unlike many here, I think Nic's best days as a player are ahead of him. I don't know if he'll be an All-Star because there are so many good players at his spot, but I think he's capable of being a legitimate second option on a contending team given the right offense and the right coach.

B. I'll be ticked if the Blazers don't match. It would be a loss of talent with only the potential of a return in the future based upon additional cap space. Portland hasn't traditionally fared well in the FA market and I think it would be hard to get equivalent talent back.

Now let's reverse it:

What would your take as a Minnesota Fan be if:

A. The Blazers don't match and you get Nic at the reported price.

or

B. The Blazers do match and the T'Wolves have to move on to another option after having dumped some significant trading chips to clear space to make the offer.

When a restricted free agent wants to sign with another team, the player and team sign an offer sheet, the principal terms of which the original team is given three days to match. The offer sheet must be for at least two seasons (not including option years). If the player's prior team also submitted a maximum qualifying offer, then the offer sheet must be for at least three seasons (not including option years). If the player's original team exercises its right of first refusal within three days, the player is then under contract to his original team, at the principal terms of the offer sheet. If the player's original team does not exercise its right of first refusal within three days (or provides written notice that it is declining its right of first refusal), the offer sheet becomes an official contract with the new team.

The principal terms of an offer sheet consist of the following. Any other terms of an offer are not considered to be principal terms, and the player's original team is not required to match:

The number of years
The base salary
The amount of any signing bonus or deferred compensation, including the payment schedule
Certain bonuses -- those considered to be "likely" for both teams (see question number 72), and those based on generally recognized league honors
Any allowable amendments such as guarantees, Early Termination Options, and trade bonuses
As with any contract offer, a team must have enough room -- either cap room or room provided by an exception -- for the offer sheet. They must also maintain sufficient room while the offer sheet is outstanding -- e.g., they can't sign a restricted free agent to an offer sheet, and then use up all their cap room by signing another free agent during the three-day waiting period.

MIN has done nothing (afaik, or has been reported) to make a valid offer sheet to Nic.

Just because the market is crazy doesn't mean you need to participate. Teams are flush with money right now. I say let him walk, put the money in your back pocket and save the cap space for a lopsided trade down the line.

It was set up under the old CBA where you could have up to 10.5% raises (or decreases). With the new CBA, you're limited to 4.5% (or 7.5% on 5yr maxes)

Cap space for who? How did that work out this year, and the year we signed Miller? Lopsided trade for who?

Nic wouldn't be embarrassingly over payed at 11.whatever. 23 year old SF that has been under the ball and chain of Nate and still has shown flashes

The story just peggs my bull shit meter. WE have 72 hours when the league recieves the offer sheet. The offer sheet has to fall under the rulls of the cba, or it shall be voided. If the offer is valid, PDX has 72 hours to match or not.

No one has seen this "offer", its just been "reported"

Wasn't his contract like $10mil first year and then $5mil the 2nd and 3rd year?

Quick Google check says $13.3mil the first year(including signing bonus) and then $11mil spread out over 4 years?

The Thunder -- as a team slightly more than $6.5 million under the salary cap before re-signing Collison -- took advantage of that below-the-cap status to unexpectedly award Collison all of their space as a signing bonus that takes his 2010-11 compensation to a whopping $13.3 million.

Signing bonuses in extensions are usually pro-rated through the life of the contract. Teams under the cap, though, can apply the entire signing bonus at the time the extension is signed, as long as the bonus doesn't exceed the available cap space.

So Oklahoma City's motivation here is fairly obvious, no matter how out of place it looks to suddenly see All-Star dollars attached to Collison's name in this season's NBA salary documents ... and then a smaller figure for the next four seasons combined.

This is OKC's thinking:

With Nick Collison now scheduled to earn $3.3 million in 2011-12 -- and with his salary descending all the way to $2.2 million in 2014-15

Now obviously that's old CBA, but it doesn't jive with what you said about the old CBA.

Kawhi Leonard is probably the most comparable player to Batum, with a bit more potential and a lot more fire, and is earning $1,861,920 from the Spurs this year.

Batum signing Minny's offer sheet and it being turned into the league are two different things. They're giving #Blazers time to get a S-&-T.

Who knows? All I know is that you don't become a great team by overpaying for role players. When I go to a ballgame, the market for hot dogs is $12. I buy my hot dogs on the street for $1.50 or wait until after the game to eat.

The beauty of sucking is that we have no illusions we're going to be good this year. It's just a matter of the degree of sucking. Let Minny overspend. Our only chance to get good is to have cap space, collect draft picks, hope they pan out and then make a lopsided trade for the final piece.

Signed extension on 11/23/10 for an assumed $11,030,000 for 4 years starting in 2011-12 This was subject to old CBA rules with 10.5% decreases. But the old CBA had a clause that said you could give as much signing bonus as possible as long as you were under the cap by that amount. So his contract extension was for 4/11. His ending salary in 2010-11 was 6.7M, and the Thunder had 6.5M in cap room. So they were able to extend his contract in the decreasing amounts, give him a bonus that wasn't prorated, because they applied it all to their present-year cap.

I'm not sure I explained that correctly, but it can't be done anymore.

Bad news for us (if we want to *keep* Batum) because he'll take the QO at that point and we'll be stuck holding a big bag of nothing next summer

I agree. It's almost impossible to know who will be available (either as a FA or in lopsided trade) a year or two from now.

It's NOT impossible to see the impact of the new CBA, and I believe that teams that show discipline will be better-rewarded for having flexibility. This is, as we should all know, a feeding frenzy and I would prefer Portland not get involved with it.

I don't think he'll take the QO. We'll offer him a five year deal averaging $8-9MM and he'll jump on it.
