There was this team that made illegal hush hush under the table offers to Joe Smith. Which one was it?
And that was pre-Kahn!

Brian FromWA @brianfromwa
@jwquick. Pretty sure you're wrong about waivers. Read @LarryCoon FAQ #63. Webster/Miller comes off the team salary when they clr waivers.
And that was pre-Kahn!![]()
Brian, did you get confirmation on waiting 7 days? Quick still making it sound like the second they waive Web/Miller they can submit their offer sheet?
Jason Quick @jwquick
Of course, those waivers can happen any second, but the 72 hour clock to match would not start until that happens, Nic signs, & POR receives
Yeah, here's the Coon quote (paren are my edits):
Yeah man, Brian quoted the CBA rules in here ealier today
Good question. That could be right.Question. Now both Miller/Webster's contracts were non-guaranteed contracts that had to be waiver prior to June30th, but both were extended and changed to team option contracts. How does that affect the situation? They're not being waived, but rather terminated. I'm assuming the language of the contract changes how they're handled?
It was never clearly announced how the contracts were changed or extended because originally BOTH had to be waived by June 30th.
If they were changed to team options that had to be exercised by say August 1st, where are we at with this situation?

Since it's a "Team Option" and not a "ETO", then I think that clause applies. The only way to terminate a contract early (other than with an ETO -- see question number 57) is through the waiver process.
Good question. That could be right.
If he really is giving up on Batum and moving on to Courtney Lee then I think it has blown up in his face. There can be no spin job on that.Like I said before, Kahn NEEDS this to not blow up in his face. Portland matching is one thing, but for it to completely collapse because he screwed up the CBA is NOT an option for him. No free agent would ever go to Minnesota again, they'd be the laughing stock, and Love would be packing his bags.
Now granted, Kahn deserves to be ripped for many things, his draft record and big mouth definitely, but as I mentioned above, I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt on the terms of the deal, simply because his career and reputation are completely on the life. You don't risk everything unless you know something.
Most of the time anyways...

My gut feel is that it falls under this aspect, since the moratorium's already occurred and we're in "new season":

BTW, if you have any info on the mechanism of them moving the date, I'd love to see it. The most I could gather was that the non-guarantee date was "moved to facilitate trades".
Correct. So I don't see how the mechanism of terminating the contract to keep the non-guaranteed money non-guaranteed can bypass the waiver process.
This article says it is going to be a buyoutCorrect. So I don't see how the mechanism of terminating the contract to keep the non-guaranteed money non-guaranteed can bypass the waiver process.
Coon CBA #65 said:(Buyouts)They do this by mutually agreeing that:
The team will waive the player
If the player clears waivers, the player's guaranteed salary will be reduced or eliminated (see question number 62)
In contracts signed or extended under the previous CBA, the payment schedule for the remaining salary may be shortened or lengthened (see question number 63)
Optionally the team's set-off rights (see question number 64) may be waived
After the player clears waivers, he and his former team are free to go their separate ways.
Quick firing shots!!!!!
@jwquick: Can't decide if David Kahn is desperate, dumb or merely dogged in his pursuit of Nicolas Batum. Can't doubt his effort, that's for sure.
We may or not be a playoff team, but this offseason sure has been entertaining.
In not saying it's a buyout though. Team options. Miller's retiring, and is rumored to come back as a coach, so he doesn't care. Webster has a chance to have his option picked up and get paid $5mil next year, which he'll never get as a free agent.
Sly Poker Dog @SlyPokerDog @jwquick Dwight @dwightjaynes has a source that says Kahn has handled this perfectly & is the greatest GM in the history of the NBA!
I hope we wait all 3 days to match.
he said maaaaaaaaayyybbbbbbbeeeeeeeeeToday was gonna be the day
Kahn was gonna sign Nic Batum.
By now, he should've somehow
Realized what he's gotta do.
