I wonder how much it'd take to get Winslow from Miami. They have Gerald Green at the 3s, and they need to shed space. I wonder if they'd have any interest in Mike Miller, a 1st round pick, and filler for Winslow, McRoberts, and Anderson? They shed all $8M that theyre over the luxury tax, they get a knockdown shooter which they don't have anywhere, and a first round pick. Probably not likely but I wonder if we could add to it and get them to consider.

No.

The Celtics offered five first round picks and were turned down.

really? I figured it'd be hard but I didn't know it'd be impossible. I'd take Anderson, McRoberts, and 2 second round picks for Mike Miller. We could buy out McRoberts and his 2 years could be combined to this year. They save $8M and get Miller. I imagine them going small with Deng at the 4 and Bosh at the 5 in some lineups, opening up enough time for Miller, Green, and Winslow. We'd turn cap space into four 2nd round picks, and would still have cap space to add more by taking on salary from elsewhere.

If Olshey can get 1 real 2nd round pick for Miller - then he deserves credit.

(and by "real" I don't mean 5 years from now and only if it is 55+)

If Olshey gets anything at all for either of these guys. it's gravy. They don't fit in the current puzzle in any way shape or form. Buy them out, renounce their rights, do whatever, but don't keep them.

They'll likely cut Haywood and work a buyout with Miller. Then we'll preserve most of our cap flexibility for other trades later in the season.

I think we got in too late in the process after all the other teams had made their big moves, but trading Haywood again to take back more salary from someone to get more future assets is a reason to wait until the absolute last minute to release him.

Mike Miller could be a really solid guy off the bench, especially if he can regain the great shooting touch he's had most of his career (not sure why his percentage last year took such a big dip).

Age. He is past the point of being able to make a meaningful contribution.

Why haven't we heard anything about Haywood officially being cut? I thought his contract was guaranteed Aug 1 and needed a 2 days to clear waivers.

I think Haywood's contract is not guaranteed if he's waived by Aug. 1.

EDIT: fix typo (Aug 2 -> Aug 1)

Good. Now, if he can turn Miller into a 2nd round pick, I will be impressed.

It could have a good chance of happening if a playoff contending team feels he can help their team to the ultimate prize. I'm thinking it would happen closer to the trade deadline. At least Olshey is restocking on the 2nd round draft picks while accumulating young talent for an open competition (starter and key bench roles).

Haywood gone. Easy decision.

Miller doesn't have a deadline other than for himself. Blazers hold the cards with him. If he wants to play for a contender, he needs to be bought out. He and his agent will spend considerable time talking with all the contenders to determine how much each/any will offer him. Otherwise, he'll be on our books/cap and gets to suit up for 82 games and never see the court. I think we have time here....expect some announcement during September (prior to Oct fall camp).

Olshey is dangling miller like a worm right now...waiting for the right bite to come along...like sitting on the river on a quiet evening with no care in the world

I sometimes forget that I have him and a few others like him on ignore, and it makes a thread really strange to read.
I would never put him on ignore; he is one of the most interesting posters on the board; whether you agree with him or not.
And I agree with him that a trade should be looked at from the perspective of maximizing your return. It reminds me of a few years back when Cleveland Indians traded two young first round prospects (both doing well in AAA) for a pitcher who hadn't been doing well for the last 18 months. And he did poorly in his first year with the Indians. Well, it happened that the two prospects didn't pan out very well either so posters said it wasn't a bad trade. But the question was "what could the GM have gotten at the time; when those prospects were still highly rated?" well, that was really out there wasn't it?
Anyway, so i agree with Jlprk's thesis, but I don't think we really know if Olshey could have got better; we just don't have enough facts.

Miller and Kaman. Don't think they can both be moved in a package together however (I think...)

not for another 2 months (wait, right in the middle of training camp/preseason, you say?)

I think common sense tells us what the going rate was for that type of trade. Most of us expected a 2nd round pick and that's what we got.

I guess Neil could have played hard ball with Cleveland, but although Cleveland getting a trade exception was nice, it was not that crucial for them. They already have a loaded roster.

Also I am not sure Neil wants the reputation of having to "win big" in every trade. He needs friendly trade partners, especially in the other conference. I think he needs to pick his battles, and this was not the time. This trade was fair.

Coon CBA FAQ 100 said:
In addition, teams cannot trade players under the following circumstances:
  • For two months after receiving the player in trade, if the trade aggregates the player's salary with the salaries of other players. However, the team is free to trade the player immediately, either by himself or without aggregating his salary with other salaries. This restriction applies only to players who were acquired using an exception (and not cap room). (Also see question number 88.)

But if it was through cap room that we got him, I don't think there's any problem. I would imagine that that was the case.

So after Aug 25, we should be able to aggregate anyone and everyone except our newly-signed free agents, who have to wait until Dec. 15.
