I remember no one being excited about Stotts too and thinking he would just be a 2 year retread lol.

He was correctly viewed as a temporary patch job. He'd already been quickly fired twice. Atlanta and Milwaukee said he was good at offense, but so bad at defense that he had to go.

Does anyone remember who all was mentioned and/or interviewed by the Blazers when we hired Stotts?

Marc Iavaroni was one guy I remember. I think maybe Dwayne Casey too

maybe Sally Jessy Rafael as well
ivaroni vs during the mcmillan hiring i think. remember Quick having a front page article about him in the O saying he was offered a job.

https://www.espn.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/117/meet-marc-iavaroni

The must-read Blazer article of the day is from the Oregonian's Jason Quick:

Marc Iavaroni will become the next Trail Blazers coach, The Oregonian has learned, after the team offered the Phoenix Suns assistant the position late Thursday.

Iavaroni, 48, will accept the job as early as today, a source close to the talks said, exactly one week after he was interviewed for the first time at the Chicago pre-draft camp.

Blazers general manager John Nash insisted late Thursday that the job has not been offered to anybody. Earlier Thursday, owner Paul Allen said the team possibly would wait until after the June 28 draft -- where the Blazers have the third pick of the first round -- to hire a coach.

If people in the know around the league say "Billups is Neils guy" I would tend to think he will be the front runner. Unless Mike D can convince him he'd bring in a d specialist?

After that press conference, I don’t see how Neil could justify D’Antoni. His teams have been just as inept on defense as Stotts’ have.

I get no one was charged, but that rape allegation and subsequent settlement isn’t a good look for a GM no one cares for either. Canzano, Quick, Turtle will all have field days with that hire unless it’s handled immaculately at the presser.

If Dame is on board, Hammon is an easy sell to the fan base and Jo Lynn.

So is Udoka, Vanterpool (who I still think will get the job), or another young black assistant

Id would like Emi U over any of them.

Clippers assistant Chauncey Billups, reportedly a candidate for head-coaching vacancies in Portland and Boston, is “definitely ready” to become a first-time head coach, Clippers coach Tyronn Lue said Sunday.

Billups, who earned most valuable player honors of the 2004 NBA Finals as Detroit’s clutch point guard, is currently in his first season as an assistant coach and has been lauded for his work helping Clippers All-Star Paul George become a better distributor en route to a career-high 5.2 assists per game.

“He’s come a long way in the last summer to now and he’s put the work in and now he’s going to have a chance to go to a team from [a] fresh start having his own blueprint on the team,” Lue said the day before the Clippers’ Game 4 matchup in the second round against Utah. “As far as being a coach, just his poise, I think he relates to the players. Him being able to communicate and being able to teach PG at the point guard position how to make plays, what he’s looking for in different situations, and he’s been working with PG all year.”

Billups was a five-time All-Star in 17 NBA seasons. When Billups played for the Clippers from 2011-13, he overlapped with Neil Olshey, the former Clippers executive who has served as Portland’s president of basketball operations since 2012. Portland All-Star guard Damian Lillard told the Athletic earlier this month that he would prefer that the Trail Blazers hire either Lakers assistant Jason Kidd or Billups. Kidd has since removed himself from consideration.

When Lue coached in Cleveland from 2016-18 he tried hiring Billups to his staff. The two met nearly 30 years ago, as teenagers at a summer tournament, and have been close friends since then. During Lue‘s and Billups’ playing careers, it was common for Billups to tag along to Kansas City to train with Lue in the offseason.

Billups was more interested in a front-office position at the time, however.

“I tease him all the time, I tell him he missed out on $15 million-18 million because he would have been a head coach for three to four years by now,” Lue said.

With the NBA on pause last spring because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Lue, then a Clippers assistant, temporarily moved into the Colorado home of Billups, who was working as a television analyst for the team and ESPN. For seven weeks, the two went through a coaching crash course that has paid dividends for the Clippers this season — and potentially another franchise next season.

“He had been working already this whole past year just learning [after timeouts], how to draw up on the board situations, and then when the break came with the COVID situation, I went to Denver [for] several weeks and we dove into it for four or five hours a day,” Lue said. “He’s really locked into drawing up plays, what plays to run, knowing the system, knowing the play calls, and he’s done a tremendous job.

“And now just seeing him on the floor coaching a five-on-five game, steadily improved and he’s done a great job. Just his poise, he’s able to hold guys accountable and the things he’s done for PG this year has been great reading pick-and-roll situations — what pass to make, what he’s looking for, what reads. Through the season, PG has gotten better and better.”

George’s 24.6% assist rate during the regular season was a career high. His 20.7% assist rate through 10 playoff games is nearly five percentage points higher than last season, and his turnover rate is also lower.

“He’s been a big influence on my game, and he’s been just a great fit and a champion, great person to talk to and have as a resource,” George said. “He’s been talking through a lot of me handling playing point and decision-making and tempo, pace, a lot of stuff from a point guard mindset and a point guard point of view, because I have been doing a lot of creating and ballhandling, and he’s helping me through that. A lot of credit goes to him for my progression.”

Here is what I just got:

- huge ego
- doesn’t work - considered lazy by almost everyone
- players tune her out when it’s her scout
- people internally laugh that she’s a HC candidate

I 100% trust this person and he’s very very well connected to Spurs.
Pop says otherwise!

That's encouraging; sounds like he is willing to put in the work.

devils advocate here. What else would he say in public?

LaMarcus Aldridge Becky Hammon has played coached his her last game as a San Antonio Spur, Coach Gregg Popovich announced Wednesday. The decision to move on from Aldridge Hammon should not be interpreted that he she has been a “problem” for the team, said Popovich, but rather both sides have decided it is in his her best interest.

Yeah I’ve been thinking it’s going to be Billups from the get go. But in my heart I really want Ricki Lake to get the job

First, even if that is true, and I'm not saying it is, this team will be distracted for the rest of the off-season, the pre-season, and the first month of the regular season. Interviews, post-game questions, will all revolve around Hammon. This is not the right situation for her. Let her get in a low pressure situation where the team is rebuilding. She can handle the media circus without the pressure of winning NOW. Imagine the set back for women coaches if the team doesn't make the playoffs when they are expected to contend in the West? She needs to go somewhere where she can cut her chops without the pressure of winning a chip for Dame, and she can win with something she built. Even if she makes the playoffs with the Blazers, they will say she was handed the keys to a finely tuned sports car. Obviously, if she leads them to the finals, then it would be considered a successful hire.

Second, the Blazers need to attract free agents who want to go to a championship team. How many perspective free agents would turn down the Blazers because they don't want to deal with the media circus, either? Some may not want to play for a woman head coach. I don't know. It is a risk.

The Blazers are at a crossroads and have one more shot to build a championship team with Damian Lillard, who is a once in a generation player for a franchise and nearing the end of his prime years. They do not need to do this, now. They should not do this, now. Maybe when Dame is gone and the Blazers are rebuilding.

It will be a circus, and I am going to disagree with you - the circus will last longer than a month. Everything she does will be a first. If the Blazers make the playoffs, it will start all over. First woman to make the playoffs. How is she going to do under pressure? How will the players respond to her? What's it like playing for her? Do the players respect her? All of the questions that were asked in the first week of the season will be repeated as the size of the media contingent doubles and triples for the playoffs.
I hate to bust your bubble we had male coach the last 9 years so tell me what big time FA sign with us.

I want whoever we choose to be tough and somewhat edgy. Get a T if you feel like it’s needed to fire up the team. For a long time I never saw any fire from Stotts. He always had an awe schucks type attitude which doesn’t exactly rub off toughness on a team.

The thing I don't like is, who is the basketball expert involved in the hiring process of our new head coach? I don't see Neil as a basketball guy, he's a PR guy who didn't start his basketball career until his 30s. Jody, Bert and Chris aren't legendary basketball minds either. So this whole thing worries me because I don't trust Neil or the rest of our front office really.

As far as who I think should have the job... the only known commodity being mentioned for someone as unconnected as me is D'Antoni and unless we get a defensive genius assistant coach with unprecedented amounts of authority for an assistant, then I don't like Mike. Other than that we've seen interviews of the candidates and articles about them. We know their public persona but that's it.

Like I said, I'm worried and have zero trust in Neil to make the right choice. We're going to have to hope we get lucky.
