Head Coach thread (3 Viewers)

The thing I don't like is, who is the basketball expert involved in the hiring process of our new head coach? I don't see Neil as a basketball guy, he's a PR guy who didn't start his basketball career until his 30s. Jody, Bert and Chris aren't legendary basketball minds either. So this whole thing worries me because I don't trust Neil or the rest of our front office really.

As far as who I think should have the job... the only known commodity being mentioned for someone as unconnected as me is D'Antoni and unless we get a defensive genius assistant coach with unprecedented amounts of authority for an assistant, then I don't like Mike. Other than that we've seen interviews of the candidates and articles about them. We know their public persona but that's it.

Like I said, I'm worried and have zero trust in Neil to make the right choice. We're going to have to hope we get lucky.

It’s probably going to be a hire that hasn’t even been mentioned by anyone. That seems to be how Neil rolls sometimes

As expected, the interview went well. Was told there were a lot of questions regarding defense. Blamed it on players, tried to sell how great the offense could be with Dame and CJ

I did not hear this directly from someone in the room, so………

These are your whispers you hear?

I did appreciate this from the article; it's something specific: But what I remember about this particular drill is that, at some point during it, Coach Hammon stopped us mid-motion. Coaches Hammon, Borrego and Messina walk over, and Becky says to Dejounte, “D.J., O.K. — your bounce pass? It’s too low. You’ve got to hit Pau exactly where he needs it. Run that again.” We then talk some more as a group about how I need the ball a little more precise, with a little more zip, so I could have a better chance to finish the action at the rim. And then we repeat the drill a few times, alternating from the left and right sides of court.
This is not brilliant. Any junior high school coach would have said the same exact thing.

I'm not try to annoy anyone, but some of you act like you don't know how the world works. Administrators (and basically anyone over 40) do whatever they want. They PRETEND to be interested in process and consensus, but they only do that to make others feel better - I've seen it over and over again... city council, presidents of universities, high school principals, hospital administrators... and Neil Olshey has more confidence in himself than any of them!

It is VERY likely that he chose who he wanted for coach WEEKS AGO. If you're being interviewed, it Does Not mean you have an equal chance. The purpose of the interviews is to...
  • Make fans feel heard.
  • Cover his ass.
  • Discover any Red Flags.

When he says that he's going to ask interviewees hard and specific questions about how the defense will be improved, he's basically lying. Yes, he will ask the questions, but the answers won't be a factor in the decision (unless they reveal a red flag).

I wouldn't mind Billups, Hammon, or MDA. But, it's coming to a point where I'd be very surprised if it wasn't Billups.

The Clipper connection is strong with Olshey....he knows Chauncey really well already.

her final decision will probable go something like this

Olshey: we have decided on Billups
Jody: ok

Probably not. Neil will just say that the candidate he wants is much better than the other 2 names he'll bring her. He'll tell her that we are SO lucky to have person X available right now,...

"Sure, you can have one of the other candidates.... if you want."

That's the thing with administrators, it's factual that Jody will have the final say, but he'll make her feel dumb if she doesn't choose who he wants, so it's not truth.

a good owner would leave that decision with the president of basketball operations anyway. Doubt she’s spending much of her time scouting coaches lmao.

Indeed, but hopefully she quotes the Princess Bride: "Did I make it clear that your JOBBBB is on the line!"

Dont forget Bert Koldie in the whole process. He knows who Paul liked before Stotts and who Paul liked if a change were to be made. I still think thats why Brent Barry come out if now where.

the Boston job sure looks like a much better situation for a new HC
I agree. With 2 younger guys, and the likelihood they move Kemba, with a "soft rebuild", there's less expectation for a new hire right off the bat. In Portland, we were already a perennial playoff team, underachieving, but still consistently there. We have a star at the peak of his prime, so there is expectation to win now, not ease in to your role.
