Can we extend him now? The guy is playing out of his mind, and I don't think it's going to change. We can't let this guy hit the open market. He's worth a 7 to 8 million per year contract imo.

I think he should get something similar to what Taj Gibson got but I think he's playing himself into a bigger deal.

Absolutely. And keeping him will help us attract FA talent as well.

Right now, Hickson > Aldridge and it's not even close. He's making LMA look bad.

Tonight's line (so far)

Hickson 19 points off 8-11 shooting and 15 boards.

Aldridge 17 points off 5-15 shooting and 8 boards.

he's outplaying quite a few players with near max and max contracts and presumably knows that. no way he signs for 7

And he's only 24. We might not end up with any cap space this summer after all, but I'm okay with that as long as we keep JJ.

might be top 20 in the league in PER after tonight. gonna be close.

The thing I like about Hickson is he is one of those "bring it every night" guys. He just flat out works hard. Neither he nor Matthews may have as much talent as others, but they work their butts off and I very much appreciate that.

It is the kind of thing that I also believe rubs off on the rest of the team and they work harder as a group.

Gramps...

His agent will let him set his value. I doubt they go for an extension as he's playing himself into a Nic Batum-like contract.

I don't know? What would you offer? Something around 4 year 35 mil?

Yeah I don't think that's unreasonable. Hopefully he doesn't start asking for more than that though.

Depends on the agent. We could always hope that the agent is the type to take the bird in the hand over the two in the bush.

Camby was extended. You can't extend someone on a 1 year contract is the difference I believe.

I'm not saying you're wrong. I'm just curious. We have his bird rights.

Larry Coon's CBA FAQ page indicates that it is allowable to extend Hickson now:

Extensions to contracts that are not rookie scale contracts (i.e., veteran extensions) may be signed up to June 30, the day before the player would have become a free agent.

But here's the reason it won't happen:

The salary in the first year of a veteran extension may be any amount up to 107.5% of the player's previous salary, but no more than the player's maximum salary in that season (i.e., the maximum salary the player can receive if he were to sign a new contract that year as a free agent -- see question numbers 16 and 17).

JJ's only making $4M this season. I don't think he's going to sign an extension that pays him $4.3M next year. As an UFA, he'll get far more than that next season.

You missed this part in that section of the FAQ:

Contracts for fewer than four seasons may not be extended.

He's on a 1-year deal, so we couldn't extend him if we wanted to. Guess there's no choice but to play out the season and hope he wants to stay here at a price we can afford.

Calm down. Aldridge has a bum ankle and still contributed in many ways tonight, especially his defense on the final play. Aldridge is an All Star who commands double teams and is one of the top Scorers in the league. Hickson is playing great and has had some good games but to say "it's not close" when they're both playing well is silly. I don't understand why you hate Aldridge so much. What has he done to you? Why are you comparing teammates that are playing together to help us win? Compare them to the opposition please.

Taking advice from the king of hyperbole....

Because ideally Hickson is a power forward. He is playing out of position and he's doing extremely well, but we could just as easily move him to power forward if we traded Aldridge.

I don't like jump shooting 4s. Sheed drove me nuts with his constant outside shooting. Aldridge shot 5-15 last night. The only reason why he even put up a semi-respectable number was because of foul shots. He doesn't rebound well for his size, and he doesn't have half the motor that Hickson does.

I compare teammates because this franchise has some major decisions going forward and one of them is whether to keep Aldridge. Personally I think Hickson makes Aldridge expendable, and he's proving that point in every game that he plays. Trade Aldridge and move Hickson to his natural position.

Thanks guys, those clearly answered my question. Makes sense. Repped.

I don't know if you noticed, but stotts started Aldridge at center last night. Curious if it was a opponent call, or is the norm from now on.

I also noticed that Hickson was playing more of his natural position. Aldridge can stretch the centers out while lillard and Hickson work the paint. Aldridge will post about 6-8 times a game, which keeps teams having to double him.

You act like getting to the line isn't that big of a deal. That's a good thing. And the Heat won a tile with Haslem at center. Why can't we play Aldridge AND Hickson going forward? Hickson is playing great at center. Why fix it if it's not broken?

Last night, hickson actually played PF and Aldridge played center for most the game.

Hickson's playing like Buck Williams for us. I love the energy and hustle.

The Heat won a title with LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh. They could have had you or me playing center and still won.

Don't get me wrong, I love our lineup with Lillard, Batum, Hickson, etc... but as good as those guys are, none of them are LeBron James.
