DENVER – Denver Nuggets forward JJ Hickson didn’t hold back Friday morning when asked about his time with the Portland Trail Blazers.

Hickson, who averaged 10.4 points and 12.7 rebounds for the Trail Blazers last season, says Portland is a special city to him and always will be. He just elaborated on why he's irked with comments the general manager made about him. And in the process, he took a jab at his replacement.

“It just rubbed me the wrong way some of the comments that were made by [Trail Blazers general manager] Neil Olshey,” Hickson explained to CSNNW.com. “I heard something to the extent of, ‘For the Blazers to be better, we can’t bring JJ back.’ That was one of the ones that really caught my attention. I was like, ‘wait, what?’ And they go out there and get a new center [Robin Lopez] and he has only three rebounds.”

To be accurate, Lopez had two rebounds in that season-opening 104-91 loss to the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday. But you get Hickson’s drift.

"He can say whatever he wants to say," Lopez responded. "I'm a true center."

The six-year veteran refused to name names, but he said he was disappointed with some of the current Trail Blazers who voiced their opinions publicly stating that they desperately needed to acquire a traditional center in the offseason.

At 6-9, Hickson played out of position at the center spot and lacked the defensive skill-set Portland was in dire need of. Yet still, he felt like he did all that he could do considering the situation.

“I was playing out of position,” he said. “I know for a fact that L (LaMarcus Aldridge) doesn’t like to play center. He doesn’t like it. He just doesn’t. He’s an All-Star so he’s going to trump whatever. I had no problem playing out of position. I feel like I did it to the best of my ability. I was one-of-six guys in the league to average a double-double, so I think I did pretty good.”

“As a player, he should use anything for motivation,” Aldridge said after learning about Hickson's comments to CSNNW.com. “So if he wants to use that to motivate him, that’s fine.”
The Sacramento Kings used to be the team Hickson had it in for being that they waived him after only 23 games during the lockout shortened 2011-12 season. Now he says Portland takes the cake.

“Portland definitely is that team,” he admitted. “Look, I had a great season with Portland. I felt like some strides should have been made to at least extend a hand to get me back. But I’m not going to do anything out of the ordinary tonight. I’m just going to play my game. I know how I play and I know what I do. I feel like they know, too.”

In all fairness, Portland did Hickson a huge favor in the summer of 2012.

According to a source briefed on the situation, says the Trail Blazers giving Hickson that one-year, $4 million qualifying offer was substantially more than what other teams were willing to pay to a player who had just come off of a inconsistent 2011-12 season between his time in Sacramento and Portland.

The platform of having a starting job, albeit at center, with starter minutes, helped him immensely in securing a three-year, $15 million deal with the Nuggets. There were not many or any opportunities for him to start at other places prior to the 2012-13 season.

While Portland could have simply offered Hickson a market value one-year deal in the $2 million range, the deep-rooted relationships that Olshey has with high-profile agents such as with his agent Andy Miller, allowed Hickson to be placed in a prime position going forward.

However, it still doesn’t take away the diss Hickson feels was directed towards him. He says he's amped for tonight’s game versus the Trail Blazers. In his words, “You know I’m going hard.”

He says it’s nothing personal. He would just have liked to have had a longer stay in Portland.

“I felt like I made tremendous strides from the first time I played with those guys,” Hickson said. “The relationship with my teammates was good. I was getting used to the city. I loved the fans. I felt like I built a great relationship with the fans. But it’s a business and things happen and now I’m a Nugget.”

great pissed off Faried and Hickson will be battling boards agains LMA and Lopez... has anyone every been outrebounded 75-12? ;)

I am sure Hickson will become another Blazer killer. But it does not change the facts. He is not as good as LMA and he is not a center. Whether Lopez is the guy or not makes no difference. He was a better option.

JJ needs to compare himself to TRob not Lopez. Would he be happy with 12-15 minutes a game coming off the bench. It does not sound like it.

I don't know who this helps more? Hickson should have stayed quiet because he just lit a fire under Aldridge and Lopez. I have a feeling Aldridge will prove to make hickson his bitch, just like he does against Zach and chandler. Once Aldridge feels you are dissing him, it only strikes a fire under him and releases the la monster!

As for Lopez... I hope he takes this to heart. Hickson just publicly punked him. Hopefully Lopez and Aldridge both grab +10 on Denver and make a statement.

Bet you he comes out BEASTIN' tonight!

A) The Nuggets have more natural rebounding talent. B) They are always tough to beat a mile above sea-level and C) Laconic personalities like Lopez and Aldridge don't strike me as the types to "play pissed."

Advantage Nuggets.

I've never understood why pro athletes need a reason to get up for a game.

I agree with Hickson in that there was too much blame put on him. He was the scapegoat in a season where he was one of the harder working players on the floor while being asked to play a different position. A lot of players would pout about it, but he didn't.

The fact he had to play center instead of the 6-11 Aldridge is kind of sad. Aldridge is basically the size of a center with his height and length. Most of it is a waste, though, because he plays smaller than his size.

Magic, Durant and Dirk. All guys who play smaller than their size that I wouldn't want on my team...

Was he really playing center, or was Aldridge just called "the power forward" on the team?

Hickson was playing for a contract. Yes he was hard working, but it's been pointed out that many of his rebounds came at the expense of his teammates.

Every person in the organization has said Hickson played center, so yeah.

Hickson has always been a hard worker. He gets after it and plays tough in the paint.

Hickson had his faults last season. SO DID EVERYONE ELSE. Why people feel the need to make him the scapegoat, especially when it comes to defense, is beyond me. This team is filled with mediocre defenders. Could Lillard have been any worse last season?

Scapegoat for what? Our bench was widely blamed for our failures last season.

I just find it hilarious that you so fervently defend Hickson, and yet you have such a hardon for Batum.

I still think JJ is just more of a stats guy than a team player and I'm happy with the Blazers decision that was made. Who cares if he's pissed. JJ is more one dimensional anyway.

Great, we'll get the 1 game out of 82 that he makes an effort on defense.

Hickson isn't making $11M per year

That is very funny

You can justify it however you want. If I went back prior to his new contract, would I find similar posts from you about Batum?

You mean when people tried to blame McMillan for Batum's game, and I told them it was more on Nic, not McMillan?

Nic still just hoists 3's all game, btw.

Batum is always gonna be like miles. Flashes of brilliance but never puts together on consistent basis minus drug issues

If Lopez was the big upgrade I'd rather have Hickson

Well it wasn't, so you can go under your rock now. Without hickson, we were able to get Lopez, Mo and t rob. That is clearly better than getting hickson

You're not really doing a good job of convincing me that it's all about his contract.

Miles even had 10x more talent than Batum

That guy was a waste

It's not all about his contract. I've always said I don't really care for his stye of play, and the fact he looks disinterested at times and is way too passive.

Now he's just overpaid and doing it.

How does a guy grab that many rebounds by being "disinterested?"

You can bitch and moan as much as you want, but he is what he is. He's one of the most versatile and gifted players in the league, but as is common with many people who have a gift that comes too easily, they do not fully appreciate that gift. I suspect he'll be one of those guys that can do amazing things whenever he really pushes himself, but that will be few an far between. Will he ever put it all together? Who knows. We don't need him to be the star on the team. We have Lillard and Aldridge. We can afford to have him be a question mark. The contract was based on the risk/reward of keeping him versus letting him go for nothing. It was either pay him or let him walk. He's still very young, so it's hard to say what he will be.

WHAT?!?!?!?!?!

This Blazers team desperately needs him to be the 3rd piece to a contending team. After him there's NO ONE on the team that's really all that great. Nic is being paid to be that guy, not a question mark.

The Blazers have a roster that is deprived of talent. They need Batum to take that next step, not settle in to being a role player.
