Let's say that we don't trade him and that Nurkic's health isn't reassuring, how much would you offer to Hassan to stay?

Realistically what can we even sign him to?
Well, isn’t Whiteside UFA? Do we have bird rights?Can we?
Well, since Neil gave Turner 70 million over 4 years I think he "can" offer Whiteside $140 million over 4...
YesWell, isn’t Whiteside UFA? Do we have bird rights?
The question isn't "How much would we have to pay to keep him?" The question is "How much should the Blazers offer?"I dont even want to get inti hiw much we'd have to overpay him to bring him back as a C playing 20mpg.
"Hire me as assistant GM and I'll tell you!"The question isn't "How much would we have to pay to keep him?" The question is "How much should the Blazers offer?"
Worst-case scenario, Whiteside doesn't get traded and enters free-agency as a Blazer. Olshey calls you up and says "Torey, I've been watching your BlazersUprise videos over the past month, and I've really come to respect your opinion. Clearly I messed up by not trading Hassan at the deadline, but what's done is done. Going forward, what do you think is the max I should offer Whiteside in free agency this summer?"
Good call here. If we offer slightly more than the MLE (~$10m), then that seems like a fair offer.I wouldn't go past 3 years. I'd target $10million a season but go a bit higher. I'd let him walk at $15mil per.
I'm skeptical he gets $15million anywhere. If he does good luck to him. I'd like him to stay a Blazer, but I dont want us to offer more than other teams. We offer him a fair market rate and he stays if he wants.
If he signs a one year deal I'd go substantially higher depending on our room under the tax, etc. Sort of how we resigned JJ Hickson.
I don't think Portland can have both Nurkic and Whiteside. Having both doesn't make sense past this season
and, the elephant in every room of the Blazer house are the extensions for Dame & CJ. That elephant sucks most of the air.
and I'm fairly well convinced that the Blazers have no intentions of paying tax next season. I have a hard time seeing Portland paying Whiteside 10-12M a year and having any realistic hope of using the MLE, BAE, or that 7M TPE, and remain under the tax.
Nurkic + Zach + Skal (RFA) is a decent start at a versatile big man rotation
How do you figure that? Here's my rough numbers:
$107m for 10 players (Dame, CJ, Nurk, Ariza, Hood, Collins, Simons, Mario, Trent, Little)
+ $3m for draft pick
+ $12m for Whiteside
+ $ 3.5m for BAE (Melo?)
+ $10m for MLE
+ $2m for Vet Min
Total = $135m with the tax threshold projected to be ~$140m
So it appears that Blazers could use the BAE & either the TPE or MLE and still be under the tax line
Damn... I forgot about the dead money.We are also carrying ~5 million in dead cap from Nicholson and Varejao.
But in general I agree. Portland can go into the season a bit over the tax and easily make some moves during the season to move under it.

ok, I get 110M for 10 players (did you forget the dead salary?)
https://www.basketball-reference.com/contracts/POR.html
* then, 3M for the first round draft pick bumping the Blazers to 113M for 11 players
* re-sign Skal for what....3-4M? Portland at 116-117M; 12 players
* 10M for full-MLE. 126-127M; 13 players
* 3.8M BAE (Melo?)....130-131M 14 players
so then, Portland is only 8-10M under the tax line...AND, they have that 7.2M TPE as an asset; and that might be a valuable asset. They also have Ariza's contract that could bring back over 5M more than his salary. None of that fits under the tax line with Whiteside at 10-12M a year
like I said, at this point, I'd rather see 20M for Nurk, Zach, and Skal, than 30M for Nurk, Zach, & Whiteside
Just saying, a 40M, 3-year deal starts at 12.345M with 8% raises. Maybe he can get more than that elsewhere, but it's iffy.40M/3y
He was guaranteed a starting spot on a team coming off a WCF appearance, and signed a 1+1 deal.Just throwing it out there...Hood took way less than anyone thought he could get to stay, in a similar situation.
Damn... I forgot about the dead money.
I dont like the idea of going into the season over the tax line with the idea to trade below. I think that could force yourself into a bad trade

Whiteside will not be guaranteed any such position and we will prolly be a lottery team.
?Heres the thing... I was all for tanking... But then we have this one player, you know... The greatest player ever for the blazers... Who literally did slapped the mess out of my face and said "did you forget who i am?"
?
We don't need to outwardly tank to be in the lottery.
If there has been any year in the last 20 where it's been this wide-open (I keep thinking 1995, for some reason, but that's cursory), and a late-rising 7 or 8 seed who's finally healthy can pull off some series wins, then it's this one.Is being the 13th-14th team in the lottery more important than being 15th-17th and in the playoffs?
