How to right the Meyers ship?

During last season; I believe shortly after McCollum used the Stampede for his 2 game rehab. The Blazers have decided players get more development at practice in Portland and with Portland coaches than actual DLeague game time. Over there the competition is worse and they don't have the best coaches.
Thanks

They may be right, m not in the best position to know what's best. But it seems to me they had the ability to hire the right coaches.

From the few D League games I've watched, I believe the Blazers are probably right. D League is worse than summer league. Glorified rat ball. All Leonard would learn there long term is how to be lazy on defense and hog the ball every chance he gets.

Well sure they could've chosen coaches but its economics. They can pay assistants for the Blazers $700k but its a waste to have 5 guys earning that much in the DLeague. Top level coaches aren't going to want to spend their career in the DLeague where 95% of their players have zero chance of making the NBA.

You know what NBA teams should really do; buy international teams. If they had an affiliate in the Spanish ACB league it would be the highest professional ball outside of the NBA. Young players could go on a badass work vacation for a month.

The only way you right the ship is changing his estrogen to testosterone pills

I've been thinking a bit lately about how much of a flop Meyers has been, and how baffling that is. The stuff in his favor is pretty substantial, he is legit 7' tall and very athletic for a big, likely top 10 in athleticism for a center in the NBA. And he can shoot. His unrushed shots are money from around the basket all the way out past 15'. and his free throws are pretty decent too, for a center. And he has decent hands, good lateral movement, and a decent wingspan.

You add up all those positives, and we should have a solid back up, if not a starter, but alas, we have a bonehead instead.

He has the physical tools, but not the mental ones. He gets confused at game speed, loses his man halfway down the court, gets suckered into every fake, gets lost on switches and rotates the wrong way almost every time.

If he can figure it out, he will be an excellent addition to the team, but he needs a shrink, or one on one guidance to help him overcome what I can only imagine is lukewarm brainpower. He has the same basic issue that Outlaw had, massive confusion. Outlaw never turned into the cool headed player that Roy or Lillard has, but he did finally find his role and figured out how to play game speed.

Year 3 for Meyers, can he figure it out?

His size, in terms of standing reach and wing-span, is really more along the lines of a PF. He has good athletisism, but being a good defender is more about position, timing and awareness. We've had some very good defensive centers, like Ratliff, Camby and Pryzbilla, and they were all pretty average in the size/athletisism department.

I think after rewatching him play against the Hawks, he did show some improvement but unless he really brings it with TRob out, it's becoming glaringly apparent why we brought Kaman here in the meantime. He's worth the 14th spot on the roster at this point. A young project big. He's better than Crabbe

He has a 7'3" wingspan. It's not like he has stubby arms. Standing reach is more about teaching somebody how to stand on their tip toes.

These measurements are taken at a combine, with a standard format of how to measure, it's not like they let some guys stand on their tip toes and others stand flat footed.

7'3 is an average wingspan for a player his height, but his standing reach is more in the realm of a 6'9 PF. The big centers will have a reach around 9'5.

No, you said his wingspan was about right for a PF. I don't buy it. LMA has a 7'5" wingspan, but Kevin Love and Blake Griffin are both under 7' in wingspan.

Actually, players are coached prior to measurements on how to "cheat" on measurements. Does anybody really believe that Kevin Love has a true 35" vertical?

How could he cheat on his measurement? With anti-gravity shoes? Do you think the people observing the test are so oblivious that they wouldn't be able to tell if a player is standing flat footed?

His wingspan is average for 7 footer, his standing reach is below average. He's a decent sized center, but it's not as though his size alone would set him apart.

Well, I think Meyers has one more year and if he doesn't show any growth by next summer, that's it. I don't think I've ever seen someone regress like this.

Leonard is not just worse than every player he goes up against, he gets soundly beaten by his man in every summer league game - this year and last year.

His confidence is shot. Once that goes, it's practically impossible to get back. See Anderson, Nick and Biedrins (thanks for reminding me Darkwebs), Andris. Just set him loose, please. It was always a mistake to take him, let's not compound it any fucking longer.

I don't know why his confidence is shot. There has been zero pressure on him.

Exactly!!! The kid shouldn't have any pressure. He's just a shitty player. It's really that simple.

The talent is there. We've seen very rare glimpses of it. I just see a guy who is completely out of his element. He lacks instincts. Thomas Robinson is all instincts, while Leonard has zero instincts.

I read the game thread today, and must have been watching a different game. Meyers boxed out very well, had multiple good stops on defense, and didn't get credited for 3 rebounds in the first quarter.

A small vocal minority of the Blazer fanbase criticizes him constantly I don't understand how it can be said that he doesn't have any pressure on him, especially by the very people who seems to thrive by bashing him.

I know you like to defend him, but there has been a clear difference between how our summer league plays with Thomas Robinson, and how they played with Meyers Leonard.

Yeah no pressure. As long as he does not read any message boards, listen to sports talk radio, or goes to the grocery store. I am sure he is feeling zero pressure. I don't want to make excuses for this guy, but come on.........there is pressure when you constantly hear/read how "fucking awful" you are. It gets in your head. Again, not making excuses for the guy, but yeah there is pressure.

Has the organization put pressure on him? Has Terry Stotts? Most fans have written him off.

I don't know the answer to that. Probably not. But the wrath of the fans is much harder to handle for a young player. They don't know any better.

So do you guys think it's the fans who have destroyed his confidence? I don't see it.

I see a player who has put his focus on shooting outside shots.

I didn't say that. I simply disagree with your statement that "There has been zero pressure on him". Fan pressure is still pressure.

I was talking about from the organization. I don't count the fans.

Then there is something wrong if he's not receiving some pressure from the team. They should be wanting him to improve. If not, send him packing.

I'm sure they want him to improve, but I haven't gotten the impression that they have put a ton of pressure on him to perform right away.
