How will you feel about a Blazers player who refuses to play?

It's a tough issue: Kyrie's right that it's a bad look (bunch of black men locked in a giant bubble to entertain the predominantly white masses), but it's not just the owners who will lose a ton of money if they don't play - the people who will be hurt most are the non-star players, many of whom might not get more than a couple more years in the NBA to make their dough.

The other thing is that this is going to cause huge rifts between players (something Kyrie is a master at). Because the union leadership, including people like Chris Paul and LeBron, have basically already committed to the deal. And now Kyrie's coming in and making them look like Uncle Toms.

Why does the the mass have to be predominately one color over another? I contend the TV audience will have a great variety of NBA fans...

Even if these guys decide not to play in Orlando (vaca plans already made wife pissed off) they will congregate in either NY or LA for pick up games probably every day.

The thing is..... every players only gets ONE vote obviously. So somebody like Kyrie who has made TONS of cash, 90% of the league aren't at his level. They can't afford to just NOT make money like him. The majority will want to comeback.

With all the outbreaks in hot countries it's been pretty much debunked that hot weather kills the virus as South America, South Africa as well as some of the warmer southern states are experiencing spikes.
You realize that it's basically winter in South America and South Africa, right?

and you do realize that Brazil doesn't really have a "winter" like how we know winter. They have had many days in the 80's and upper 70's recently and yet, they are having a spike. In May, the average high temperature is 79.5 degrees and June 77 degrees and average lows in the mid 60's. That doesn't sound like winter weather to me. :bgrin:

The actual article says he voted no on returning, but also stressed the importance of finishing the season.

yep, Blazers voted no because they didn't think that it was the best format available not because they didn't want to play.

That was ownership. Fairly ceertain the article is talking about a vote amongst the players on returning.

Infection spikes have nothing to do with the weather. What is relevant is the fatality rate. The virus will not be as devastating in warmer weather in my opinion.

Not my position to judge. I think it's going to be a shit show anyway.

Not suggesting that hot weather kills the virus, just that there are studies that suggest that hot humid conditions slow the spread of the virus. And Orlando in August is hot and humid. So they might be better off playing then and there, as opposed to waiting to start up in October.

"However, the MIT study – which looked into global cases of COVID-19 from Jan. 22 through March 21 – came to a more hopeful conclusion. “The data so far clearly shows that the number of cases for temperatures greater than 17°C (63°F) and absolute humidity less than 9 g/m3 (about 60% relative humidity) is low,” meaning that the virus was not spreading as rapidly in warm and humid climates.

Absolute humidity tells us how much actual water vapor is in the air, and this is a key factor in virus transmission, according to the MIT study. Drier climates tend to evaporate the layer of moisture that surrounds a virus when it is expelled by a cough or sneeze. A humid environment would prevent that layer of moisture from evaporating, further preventing exposure.

I think the players should play. They have opportunities to make statements about social injustice during a time when they will have a huge spotlight on them, maybe the biggest spotlight they have had or ever will have. I also think that in the bubble the players for the most part will be safe and have a better chance at staying healthy than they would in the general public (unless the players were planning on continuing to quarantine/shelter in place). Then there are the financial ramifications for the players to think about. If they don't play they lose a bunch more money this season. More importantly if they don't play the owners are going to legitimately rip up the CBA and renegotiate from a place of power during a time of social and economic unrest, that would result in the players losing billions and billions in the years to come. The worst time to have to negotiate anything is when business is bad so the owners can point to downward trends and future uncertainty. That's my take.

All of that said, I'm not a player and I'm not a black man. These guys have a lot of things to think about and a completely different perspective than I do. So I totally respect whatever the players choose. However I for one can't stand Kyrie. He is constantly a disruption and a destructive force in any organization, be it a team or the league, that the guy is part of. He has shown that he is extremely selfish and makes boneheaded decisions. I have no idea what his reasoning for what is being reported that he is doing would be. It very well could be informed, altruistic and perfectly justified. That just hasn't been Kyrie's M.O. during the time I've observed him in the public eye. Regardless Kyrie has the right to not play and to voice his opinion to other players on why they shouldn't play either. I'm just dubious of Kyrie's reasoning and quite possibly even his intentions.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that something can be worked out to salvage the season both for my own enjoyment and the players best interests. On a side note I initially wanted the rest of the season canceled because there are so many much more important things than sports. That was before the government threw caution to the wind and for the most part reopened everything... oh and then I also became much more educated on the ramifications to the players if the season isn't resumed and finished.

I can confirm, it is hot and humid as hades here right now.

Players are being lead, or listening to, the one guy in the league that still believes that Earth is flat?
I personally think they should call the season. I'll watch if they don't, of course, and fully expect the Blazers to win the championship.

And of course it is Kyrie. I defy anyone to read this quote without laughing:

"I do research on both sides," Irving said. "I'm not against anyone that thinks the Earth is round. I'm not against anyone that thinks it's flat. I just love hearing the debate."

It is so stupid it's magical. But he's right about covid. Things could go really wrong.

I'm OK with players not going. No pay.....no play!

2500 new coronavirus cases in Florida today.

Governor insists on opening the state.

If you've been awake at all during this year you know it's pretty much impossible to predict what things will look like a month from now.

If the surge in covid cases continues it might not be an option to play or not to play.

Yes, I know the players are going to be in a bubble but hospitals are filling up.

Houston's (I know, it's in Texas, not Florida, using it as an example) ICU beds are at 85% capacity and continuing to fill.

Can you imagine a player having an injury like Nurk's that requires immediate hospitalization and surgery going into a hospital that is swamped and scarce on resources and personnel?

Doesn't matter what Kyrie, the players, or the owners want.
