Hubble takes the biggest image ever of Andromeda at 1.5 billion pixels

I see no reason why life can only exist here on earth. Doubt is measured by the odds. And it's a matter of which odds: life elsewhere or life on quintillions of worlds or whether we can confirm this life with 100% (not 99.999999999999%) surety. I've been consistently stating my position in different words hoping the concepts sink in. A 5th grader would get it, but you don't. Or don't want to - check and mate.

jlprk called you probability challenged. He's right.

I never said highly probable. There you go again. The odds of winning the california lottery is about 1:259,000,000. That's less than 1. Someone wins, eventually. Not every week, but eventually. Less than 1 doesn't mean impossible as you've translated my words to mean.

The odds that jlprk suggests that there is life is akin to a coin flip (50-50, or 1:2). I've written (in different combinations of words with the hope that you'll comprehend their meaning) that the odds of life nobody knows, that I think it's similar to the tiny 1:259,000,000 number and that jlprk and many scientists seem to think it's 50-50. I say it looks like way < 1 odds because we can't find it. jlprk says the universe is so big that there's lots of life but it doesn't have to be close enough for us to detect. I say if we can detect it, it's a good indication it's everywhere. If we can't detect it, it suggests that what life is out there is infrequent and likely to be so far away from us that we may as well be alone in the universe (as the astrophysicist you quoted, then mischaracterized, actually said).

People express doubt as a measure of odds because doubt means:

The "truth" in this discussion being the chances of winning the life lottery.

I better learn what the argument is about if I'm being quoted. Now, I said what again? I thought I was disagreeing with Denny, not Magnifier. But since I can't possibly follow this thread (well, 99% probability), who knows who I was agreeing with.

It was the old Divide & Conquer trick the CIA taught Denny in Board Owner Profitable Agitator 101. It didn't really work on Magnifier. He was going to quit for the evening anyway.

I freakin' love this stuff...to me the Hubble is one of the greatest achievements in my lifetime...and Pluto IS a planet!

I could share a rather long story from about 40 years ago about storing digital imagery. But I won't except it has become more funny over time.
Damn we have come a long way since then. Back then, it took days to receive the picture and more days to process it. Only after mastering this
did they conjure up Hubble to give us this look.

Are the colors in Hubble images real?

There are no "natural color" cameras aboard the Hubble and never have been. The optical cameras on board have all been digital CCD cameras, which take images as grayscale pixels.

Sometimes the color is as natural as possible. However, the color given to the images is not just "artistic embellishment." The images are, indeed, downloaded as black and white, and color is added for a number of different reasons – for example, to show the dispersion detail of chemical elements and highlight features so subdued that the human eye cannot see them.

For more information, read The Meaning of Color on HubbleSite, which explains in detail how color is added to images.

We won't find life with Hubble. Sure it takes pictures like this but until it can take pics of something truly enormous, I'll use HCP's ego as an example, it isn't good enough.

Please clarify what you like about dviss' post above, "prove God exists". Please don't tell me Damion has a part.

The logic of it.

Can't see God, can't see aliens.

I've been ridiculed before for saying that I could believe the moon landing was faked. I don't actually believe it but I wasn't there and I didn't see it with my own eyes.

I'm much more inclined to believe in life on another planet compared to the stories I've been told about a God who created everything, can do anything, could end human suffering in a blink of an eye but says "fuck it, don't believe in me and you'll burn in hell"

Whatever is out there and wherever we came from I hope it isn't the stuff we're told in church. It just seems soooooo evil.

I was talking with my wife about the pope saying something about athiests who are good can go to Heaven. She said she could go then. I told her I'd miss her.

I don't generally try to talk people out of religion because I don't see the harm on a personal level. I see lots of greed in a larger sense but an individual believing in fairy tales doesn't bother me.

Ha! Well maybe you won't have to miss her. Anyway Thanks. I guess dviss needs a little poof, I am glad I don't.

But you want us to prove a book wrong that talks about a talking snake, a burning bush, and a man surviving for days inside of a whale. That same book puts women in subjugation from the beginning by saying she is less than a man because she was created from his rib then, it blames them for the reason we die. The book further states that slavery is A-ok and slaves should be obedient to their masters...

Yeah...No... You prove it to be true. Especially if christians want to denigrate those who don't believe that it's true and make them live by your biblical laws.

Wow! You can pull a lot out your ass! Who would have thought it!
Oh, btw, I saw where you were referred to as a gentleman. Why would that be?
