Lake Anderson and Coyote reservoirs on Coyote creek in Santa Clara County kind of represent the problem with water in California. Built back in the 30s and 50s to store water when its plentiful to
make farming the Santa Clara valley possible. Coyote creek runs out of the Diablo range, a normally very dry mountain range. But ever few years it will rain like hell and fill those reservoirs to the max and even then, the Creek will flood Alviso on the south edge of the Bay. Another reservoir could be filled The creek never runs to the bay otherwise as all the water percolates into the valley in normally practice. Now these reservoirs are only filled to 68% capacity when it rains due to fears of what might happen if and earthquake damaged the dam. Back when they were built no one lived in the way, it was farm land. Now residential almost all the way from the dam to the Bay.

The farming in California built the reservoir system, but as the farms and orchards were replace with people, water resource development stopped and they fear to use what they have.
Look at this list of CA reservoirs and when they were constructed. Not much in the past 50 years while the States Population has went from 10 million to 37 million residences.

Reservoirs
don't stop droughts, they tide you over until it rains again but that takes a plan. Urban planers never thought they would run out of farms to cut off, but they have now and they fear those dams that made farming possible.

Finally, MarAzul for the win! ;)

In mountain view, every house has a plum tree in the front yard. The trees are perfectly in a line. They dug up the plum orchard to build the subdivision and they left one tree for each home, front yard.

I don't think so.

Yes.

And so are you.

You're bitching about the building of houses for all of the people who moved to California when you're one of the people who moved to California.

Also, it seems to me that complaining that all those other people had the FREEDOM to build houses in orchards, flood plains, and so on is just plain un-Libertarian.

How wrong can you be?

Yes.

That's not what MarAzul posted.

They fill the reservoirs 68% full because the dams were built a long time ago and aren't maintained well enough. They stopped "water resource development" instead of continuing it and now they're afraid to use the old infrastructure due to its neglect.

You might want to read what MarAzul actually posted.

That's a statement of fact, not a statement about the cause of any problems.

There's plenty of water for the people. The orchards are irrelevant, other than government was willing to get them water but won't for homes.

I don't really care. California sucks. I just like watching you flail.

"water resource development"

True, development stopped and many existing reservoir pose a threat now, to a population that didn't exist when they were built. But the dams could be fixed.

The real problem is leadership. Back when the dams were constructed the farmers were Republicans, the state was republican but not now. That toggled rather rapidly over the past 30 years.
"Urban planners" are a new breed of democrat claricy. I don't know if it will ever occur to that crowd to build reservoirs in the mountains. Much easier to blame Global Goblins and lay a tax on
the goblin foot print. That will raise money to help the large underclass pay for the high priced water.
Screw the farmers, they are the uneducated problem.

If California weren't so awesome, I'd be working for Nike in Portland. I turned them down a couple of times. I'd much rather live here.

Portland would be my 2nd choice, though. On the mainland...

Even with all the new people, agriculture uses 80% of the water. The more orchards you replace with homes, the less water you need. But government simply failed. The list of new reservoirs is damning.

I worked in La Jolla about 3 months once. Dang that was nice. We lived in Los Altos at the time, but it was summer time so I brought the kids down while I worked there.
Temporary though darn it.

I live near La Jolla. I could walk there. A long walk, though.

But government simply failed

Well those republican farmers knew they needed water and they knew how to act in consort, put together a bond issue and build what they needed. The rabble moving into the promised land don't know much and the Urban planners can't see that far. Hell, look around you! Who the hell is pushing for a real fix? Damned if these fools don't think they can fix stuff like this with a carbon tax.

Sorry Denny, California is fucked. But take heart, it just the first of more to follow.

I really wish they'd fill the potholes and put up more street lights.

If California is fucked, so is the rest of the country. The state's GDP is bigger than all countries in the world but 7.

If you eat nuts or vegetables, most likely they were grown here. 98.5% of all tomatoes eaten in the U.S. are grown here. Peaches. Olives. Grapes. Garlic. The list is quite long.

Gee, why did they stop "water resource development"?

The answer is that "certain people" don't like to pay taxes.

As a new Libertarian, I don't believe in leadership. The natural order is the way California was before the politicians invaded. That's right, no reservoirs. No water.

Kick out the Mexicans! No public school for those kids. Keep them picking where they belong. Maybe rich Republicans will volunteer to replace them in the fields.

Because the state is overrun by tree huggers.

Like I said, you couldn't be more wrong.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_State_Water_Project

In 1980, the North Coast rivers were incorporated into the National Wild and Scenic Rivers system, effectively eliminating the possibility of any projects to divert them

With its large storage capacity, Sites Reservoir would increase the production and flexibility of California's water management system, yielding 470,000 to 640,000 acre·ft (0.58 to 0.79 km3) of new water per year.[57] This project is being seriously considered by the Department of Water Resources, as California's water system is expected to face serious shortfalls of 2 million acre feet (2.5 km3) per year by 2020.[58] However, the project has been criticized for its high cost, and potential disruption of fish migration when large amounts of water are drawn from the Sacramento River during the wet season.

Stage II, which includes such works as the Peripheral Canal and Sites Reservoir, was to have been built beginning in the late 1970s and 1980s – but due to concerted opposition from Northern Californians, environmentalist groups and some economic interests, as well as the state's increasing debt, attempts to begin construction have all met with failure.

I'm fine with Mexicans and people of every other ethnicity. I'm for an open border in both directions, not building walls to keep you in.

Well you are winning Denny, it's going just as you like. About 13 million have come from south of the boarder since the last reservoir was built. More on the way if Jerry Brown can find enough
money to serve them well. Between that funds sponge and the environmental freaks, California has all the reservoirs that it ever will have. Heck, they have been trying to take them out, return
all the streams to the natural state. Hetch Hetchy is their dream target, the tree hungers wet dream to be dried out.

I find all these competing ignorant interest amusing as hell, especially now that they are blaming lack of water on Global Climate Change and their answer more tax but no engineering.

Almost all the immigrants i know work for a living and work hard. They pay taxes. They're good people.

Since they pay taxes, I have no beef with them getting some benefits in return.

All the people combined here use 20% of the water or less.
