I can feel them coming... the Lillard Wars

I always lose at penis-measuring contests. No fair going there, BG.

It's the one thing I can honestly say I'm comfortable saying I have a good shot at winning, even without knowing any of you guys. So that's always my trump card.

I get the feeling that Lillard is going to be the Blazers' choice at 6. I hope not, but I fear so.

If he is... I predict there are going to be some pretty interesting conversations/arguments happening at least until he steps onto the floor as a Blazer.

Why?

  • He's a shoot-first PG. That makes many of us nervous... especially those of us who remember Damon Stoudamire. :)
  • He is an older player. That generally means more limited upside.
  • He is from a small school. Players do emerge to success in the NBA, of course, but the odds are longer.
  • #6 is a pretty high pick, and it doesn't look (based on the mocks, etc.) that any other team would consider taking him in the top 5, so Portland picking him there would seem like a reach.

There's a lot that can happen between now and draft day, but I think that a Lillard pick at 6 would have an interesting impact here...

Ed O.

Terry Porter was an older shoot first small forward from a small school.

Okay, even I am laughing at that. Lillard ain't gonna be a Terry Porter.

Wow! I would love to be wrong about Lillard not being as good as Porter!

Fingers crossed!

Fez could almost go back and link an "I told you so" thread about every player in this last draft. He rotated guys in and out of his signature so fast, it was hard to keep up on who he was repping from week to week.

Off the top of my head, Fez wanted:

Beal
Marshall
TRob
Waiters
MKG

Am I forgetting anyone?

I'm going to guess "Yes". He probably wanted Drummond at some point as well. :)

Then again, I was for Lillard at 6 and trying to get Drummond as well for some time. Leonard I didn't warm to until I soured on Drummond. I also wanted Zeller early on before being able to study Leonard and his incredible athleticism compared to Eric Montross, er, Tyler Zeller.

The war is over, Derrick Rose, er Damian Lillard should have gone #2 in the draft.

It's a good thing I wasn't the GM of the Blazers for this draft!

But to be honest, Zags has just recovered all the cred he lost from pushing the "Draft the Stache" campaign.

I think the Lillard wars are over.. I think team don't draft Lillard has waved the white flag.

Still see CP3 more than Billups in him though.

Phew.

I'm just relieved I didn't stake out a position one way or another ... er ... I mean I liked Lillard from the jump; how could you chumps not see how good he's going to be? (unless of course he can't hack it in the NBA and busts, in which case I never liked him much anyway).

Funny, because I actually felt (not sure if I posted it) that Lillard would be my pick even if we had the #2. I just don't see any of the others after Davis as being superior talents. Then you factor in position of need, and it's a very easy decision.

Also funny that Ed O. is still so staunchly anti-"older" players. We've seen too many examples of young guys that don't pan out for me to feel like that's much of a measuring stick, especially when it's someone from a small school who is likely to have a totally different development trajectory. No offense, Ed, but you make yourself look silly every time you bring up that argument.

agreed. i don't really see the billups comp. His demeanor even seems like rose.

Rose could barely shoot coming out of Memphis ... I get the Rose-like demeanor (seems pretty even keeled) but stylistically there's gotta be at least something in his game that reminds you of Billups: Big guard, likes to shoot over the top, but can finish through contact while not being the purest passer (but still good enough).

My biggest issue is most likely having seen so much of Billups lately that it overshadows an earlier Billups that might have had the same driving ability.
And it's mainly on his drives that he looks really Rose-esque. Had one today where he was kind of falling back after getting to the hoop, and pushed it up opposite handed which rose does all the time. So maybe a rose-Billups hybrid.

I can let Ed O. defend himself, but teams that are rebuilding are looking for "upside" players, and they are the younger ones.

I dont want to say it but i gotta... Mini-Roy. Isn't that what a Rose/Billips combo is? Roy at 6'3" in my imagination hast this carriage and aggressiveness.

Shit. Not saying I said it first, but I said it a few days back, and have seen that comp a bunch of times since.

I won't remember Roy as a scorer, I'll remember him as the best player in the league to have the ball in his hands with the game on the line on the last play.

Until he does that a few times he's "just" Derrick Rose.
