I like Carroll

This guy was very talented in college, but his size is a problem. Success in summer league basketball doesn't mean you will do well in the NBA, but it's good to see that the nets are giving him some looks.

But at least he is lighting up the summer league.. Unlike agger.

Hey guys - long time reader of these Nets boards. I feel obligated to share my opinions of Jaycee here.

If we had drafted this guy in the 2nd round (which we were very close to have done) and in his first summer league game he put up 22/7/5 leading the team in all catergories there would be several of you starting fan clubs for Jaycee!!

I don't understand all the dislike. Stop thinking he's a point guard! He's not! He's a petite, high energy 2 who is an absolute assassin.

Yes, it' been one game... but isn't this guy the player we had hoped Brandon Armstrong to be? I'd rather an aggressive, confident player in Jaycee instead of the passive ghost of Armstrong.

I'm sorry but it's summer league....He's undersized and not athletic, He'll get burned by almost every 2 guard in the league. Until he dominates someone who is actually going to be a player in the NBA thats going to be my opinion. I don't believe for one second that he would be able to make those shots he was making in the NBA. He forced them and those are not gonna drop when he has someone bigger and more athletic guarding him.

And the dislike isn't because of the numbers...it's because of how he scored them, it was some sloppy....sloppy basketball.

Exactly right Netitude. JC is an absolute assassin. He shoots a very high percentage. What I've struggled to understand in this thread is why some posters would rather have worse shooters shoot, then better shooters. JC is simply the best shooter on the floor at almost all times. He is learning to be a PG, but he's a winnner and very intelligent player - JC would be strong as a backup and in the locker room. It's as if too many fans only understand BBall from the ESPN highlights. You'd rather see VC shoot 30% on 20 very poor shots because he'll get a couple of monster dunks, then see a guy shoot 50%+ on very good shots.

One final point -- JC is a tremendous athlete. He's got a 40" vertical jump, runs a low 4 minute mile, has quick hands, and simply wear out most guys in the NBA. Improving his defense will be his biggest challenge, but he's got everything else to be a successful combo guard. I believe you'll see him become a better NBA player than Reddick. Yesterday's game was no illusion.

Even though this just summer league, from what people here on the board are saying and from what I read, this guy needs to be on the team and coming off the bench as a backup SG. Forget the combo guard stuff. Clearly Thorn wants another vet PG. If we dont trade M. will, this guy could be a cheap option SG off the bench ala House, like someone said earlier. CDR will be the first SG/SF off the bench. Then this guy should be the third.

Last time Thorn wanted to 2nd round pick in the draft, they were targeting Ellis. Dont sleep on ROD. This could be another steal.

Welcome netitude and USUBlue to S2.

USUBlue, I'm assuming you are a Utah State fan and watch all of his career. How much did he progress over it? How different was he as a senior than as a freshman?

im not going to fall in love with a guy because of 1 summer league performance. we see it every year, some undrafted know name looks good and everyone oohs and ahhs... then the guy ends up as the 12th man on a d-league team.

im much more interested with how the guys who will make the team look, specifically on defense and in loose ball situations.

Hes an interesting player and maybe its worth to take a chance on him. The Nets never really had 3 point shooters who can hit every open shot like this guy can. His upside is an Daniel Gibson and his downside is an euroleaguer. He probably has the most upside as any of the guys the Nets brought in. I wanted Hodge to make the team but Hodge reminds me of a Linton Johnson, a guy who is an athletic defender who has absolutely no offense. Carroll is an interesting player for the Nets but every good team needs a 3 point shooter and the Nets never really had one. The thing with shooters they get hot and cold but Thorn said if was looking to get an extra second round pick for this guy so it looks like hes here to stay.

You're all missing the point...the Nets like him...repeat the Nets like him.

1) they were trying to trade to get him, and based on what Polinsky, the chief scout said of him after his workout, I believe them.

2) they think his athleticism is underrated. They said that too and yet people here are willing to believe Jonathan Givony and Aran Smith over the chief scout of the Nets. (That assessment was reposted today on NetsDaily.) Hello.

3) it appears to me that he has a partial guarantee. The Nets were one of three teams that pursued him after he went undrafted...the others being Phoenix and Toronto. Frank said the Nets "worked very hard to get him on our team". What does that tell you? It tells me they did something to get an advantage...and it wasn't making Mormonism the official team religion (although I would not put that past Yormark).

4) He started over Will Conroy and Yuta Tabuse, both with D-league experience. Conroy averaged 10 ppg last year. Carroll played 19 minutes, more than the other two.

5) Frank said. "We like Jaycee".

I dont know what else you need to make the assessment that the Nets wanted him.

The Nets like Jeff McInnis at one point too.

THAT analogy doesnt play. If the Nets gave him a guarantee, it was probably on the order of what Hite got...$20,000. If they sign him, it will cost them $442,000. McInnis, $7.4 million. It's a tiny risk of a roster spot, not a commitment. And this is what I have thought they should be doing, not signings of damaged goods like Tractor Traylor, Lamond Murray, Ron Mercer, Jeff McInnis, Alonzo Mourning, Rodney Rogers and Jamaal Magloire.

JC improved alot during his 4 years at USU. Not necessarily as a shooter -- he was always a great shooter. Mostly he improved with his shooting off the dribble (not just spot up), his creating to the basket (doesn't usually finish at the rim, but rather in the key), toughness (he usually had at least 2 guys hanging on him most games).

To give some perspective, Ramon Sessions at Nevada and JC had some great battles with JC winning many of them. JC was the WAC player of the year, despite Jamal McGee of Nevada getting drafted in the 1st round.

JC isn't going to light the NBA up and has undeveloped PG skills, but he would be a great role player as a shooter and creating. New Jersey seems to need a player like that -- I don't see it in Conroy, Ager, or Hodge.

I'm not concerned about the money because I understand how cheap he would be.

My point is, saying the Nets like him doesn't hold much weight with some people (me included). It isn't about claiming to know more than the Nets paid professionals, but they aren't infallible. In fact, they have made many mistakes.

Welcome to S2, netitude and USUBlue! If you have any questions, feel free to PM me!

Jaycee's defense is what gets me most nervous. I mean, the other rookies' defense may be at least passable, because of their size. His shooting would be a great addition...but his defense would make me extremely nervous.

Thanks for the invite. I agree with you, I've always believed that if JC didn't make it in the NBA, it would be because of his defense. I hope he keeps improving his defensive quickness.

They like RJ and he became a very good player.

They like Ellis and ha became a very good player.

Of course with every good pick Thorn has made some mistakes too.

I wouldnt mind him off the bench for quick points... But He shouldnt be running the point and he is too weak and short for NBA SGs. If he can do it in a NBA game, then yeah by all means bring him along.

as previously posted... by someone else (too lazy to look for it) if he was paired up with carter... he would be fine offensively cuz carter can run the point... but can he play D vs PG's... thats the question

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Dark Defender @ Jul 9 2008, 04:17 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div><div class='quotemain'>I like him off the bench tonight instead of manning the point.</div>

Starter or not, I liked seeing him at the 2 spot today. Even when he played point in the first qtr. he looked more comfortable and made several passes into the post. He probably should have had 3-4 more assists but guys couldn't convert once he had delivered. I thought he played within the flow of the game today and the shots he took were largely uncontested and not forced (minus the one shot he had to take on the inbounds due to the shot clock). We finally saw what he could do if given the ball at the 3 point line on a kick out. Nice games from several players today, including Jaycee with a quiet 17 points...

I don't like him anymore, holds the ball to long and did u see the game today where Anderson was wide open for three and there was two people on him and he just chugged up a shot. I know he's trying to make the team but sometimes an assist is better than a bucket.

I don't see why he can't do exactly what Eddie House did for a fraction of the price.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (netsking @ Jul 9 2008, 08:16 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div><div class='quotemain'>I don't like him anymore, holds the ball to long and did u see the game today where Anderson was wide open for three and there was two people on him and he just chugged up a shot. In today's game Carroll played at SG. Will Conroy was our main PG.

I think he definately deserves an invitation to camp, and depending on how Lawrence and Co. feel if Carroll can compete NBA type of players rather than rookies and d-leagures, I say we give him a shot and let him come off the bench. He has really impressed me, although I don't see him playing point, I can definately see him playing 2 sometimes...maybe.

I'd definitely give him a shot at camp. Could always use a clutch sharpshooter off the bench. We still haven't addressed that and there is no reason a rookie with a good bball IQ can't fill that role.

Down 3 with 2 seconds left... I put him out there in a small lineup.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (netsking @ Jul 9 2008, 05:16 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div><div class='quotemain'>I don't like him anymore, holds the ball to long and did u see the game today where Anderson was wide open for three and there was two people on him and he just chugged up a shot. Nope, I did see Carroll wide open at the 3 point line more times than anyone in this game though. I did see Anderson go 1-5 including 0-4 from 3pt. land. As for assists, Carroll has 10 in the 3 games...playing point in two of them. Conroy leads the team with 17 in 3 games all at the point while CDR has 4 assists in 3 games. No one else on the entire team has more than 2 total assists!

And tell me when an assist is better than a bucket? When you are the small white guy that didn't get drafted and need to help make the real "talent" look good? If you think the coaches wanted him to dish out assists then you're mistaken. He was one of the most prolific scorers in the country....he can shoot from anywhere, and the coaches know he is instant offense. I think he's done a good job of putting in a balanced and efficient effort in the time he's been given.

...which is why Conroy was inserted into the starting line-up.

I'm wondering how much different this team would look with Marcus at the helms, how much better the percentages would be, and how much more these guys would be scoring.

That's why I believe we were "screwed" with the Heat game - the lack of a good point guard really made Chalmers look extremely good.
