Many of the relatively-small number of forces there are not, shall we say, "regular" forces. At this point they're advising, which carries its own level of danger and risk-v-reward setup.

I don't want to (can't?) comment on why? and should we? and surrender! and the like, but I've seen commentary in a few places that ISIS is still roaming the countryside at large. That part isn't true.

Rebels or guerilla forces fade into the wood, desert, wherever and regroup...ISIS, Taliban, Hamas, etc...maps aren't a clear picture of how many ISIS followers are in the region....the British made this mistake during the American revolution thinking the farmers disbanded so they got careless. Viet Cong did this as well...blend in with the locals, hide in the jungle and regroup to strike. Terrorists are usually patient. They'll plan things a long time in advance ..The idea tha Al Qaida or Hamas or ISIS are defeated because of any battle is to not understand that they are scattered all over the globe in cells...their war knows no borders...then they suddenly pop up in a region and start taking back territory...it's no wonder Mattis thinks Trump is clueless because well....he's clueless.

We were put in this position because we didn't seal the borders when we invaded Iraq and many of these guys got asylum from Assad. Bush dropped the ball on this one. I never wanted troops there at all but the way to leave is to usually at least inform your generals
