Is there a package that Houston could put together that would be decent value for Aldridge and would accelerate a rebuilding process if we went that route? Would you require Asik back? Would a package including some combination of Patrick Beverly, Chandler Parsons, Greg Smith, Terrence Jones, and/or Donatas Motiejunas be enough? Would you want to involve a third team (sending Asik to the other team, and bringing other assets back to Portland)?

What would you do that would work for both teams?

Note: this completely hypothetical thread is based solely on the multiple days' worth of discussion of Aldridge allegedly wanting out, and the report that Dwight told Houston that he would want them to bring in a third all-star if they signed him. In no way does the creation of this thread constitute an endorsement of trading Aldridge for inadequate value. The opinions to be expressed in this thread do not necessarily reflect the opinions and values of the original poster

I don't think Houston is a good candidate. They won't have any good draft picks after getting Howard, and none of their young guys are All-Star level talents. They won't move someone like Harden for Aldridge, so I think there are probably better trades out there. If we are moving LMA, it needs to be for young talent and draft picks.

I would approach Orlando. See if they'd do a Vucevic/Oladipo trade. We would have to do it fast because we would have to scramble to see if we could sign someone like Josh Smith or Paul Millsap.

Asik and Jones would be the starting point, but that is not enough.

I don't want anything but cap space and next years picks from a team like Cleveland. If there is a player; then I would trade for Drummond.

Other than that; if rumors are true; it definitely shouldn't be for any player that doesn't move our win total down. If we do lose Aldridge; then we need to have a proper rebuild.

I would say "fuck it" and just give Houston Aldridge and Howard. I would much rather see Houston win rings than Miami or okc. That team would dominate them. If we go on proper rebuild mode; we are 4-5 years from seriously contending anyway.

Houston would be my second favorite team again. They've taken my favorite player and won a ring before. Id like to see that again if Aldridge wants out anyway.

Fuck that. If Aldridge wants out, we will send him for the best deal. He can figure out his own future after that. I'm not going to be happy if we just hand him out for free like we did with Clyde.

It wouldn't be for free. We would need young players, cap relief and draft picks for next summer. I'm sure Houston would do everything they possibly can to obtain those picks with asik and the other younger players they have.

This seems like a better place than the other thread:
Here's the issue, though, for me. Up until the draft, all of my ideas were based around sucking this year, and thus having at least our own 2014 lotto pick (in addition to a piece like Thompson with upside), not worrying about a C (because we picked either Noel or Len) this year because they'd be rehabbing and we could get a better idea of what Leonard could do, and stockpiling assets going forward (since we probably wouldn't have our 2015 pick).

Now, I'm a bit resigned to the fact that, not only is LMA probably not going to be here past 2015 for whatever reason, but there's almost nothing we can do (outside of injuries and multiple other starters going out) that will make us "bottom 12" bad this year. Remember, it took this team ending 0-for-13 even AFTER Batum and Wes were dinged up and Lillard started wearing down to get "bottom 12" bad last year. It seems that it would take trotting out Lillard/Wes/Batum/Robinson/Leonard to be "bottom 12" bad (and therefore getting nothing in return AT ALL this year for LMA), which isn't going to happen. And even then, it's not a lock.

So if we can't possibly tank hard enough (without trading Wes and/or Batum along with LMA, either in the same or separate deals) to get a decent percentage at a top 5 pick, and a very small chance of being "bottom 12" bad, YET LMA doesn't want to stay, then what? Do you look to trade those guys and burn it all down? Maybe, but I don't see teams giving up 2014 or 2015 draft picks for Batum or Wes unless they're teams that will be good with or without them. So it seems as if the thing to do would be to attempt to get a good big on a rookie deal in return for LMA, almost regardless of what else comes with it.

If somehow you get a Cousins (plus add-ins) in a 3-way, or 2 good young players (like Biyambo and MKG), or Drummond or something, then I think you have to jump on it. Getting someone like Asik (who is UFA in 2 years, just like LMA) doesn't seem to be a good return, and HOU has only its own firsts and a boatload of our 2nds.

ATL has 4 1sts in the next two years (their own, BKN's 2014 and BKN's 2015).
ORL has all of their firsts through 2018, as well as the worse 1st of DEN and NYK in 2014, PHI 2016 1st and LAL 2017 1st
PHX has a protected MIN pick in 2014 (through 2016), and LAL 2015 1st

[not really a trade scenario, but CHA could conceivably end up with their own lotto pick (to CHI, but top 10 protected), DET's pick (9 or worse) and our pick (13 or worse) in next year's draft. Adding 3 top 13 picks next year could help almost any team out. Wish there was a way to Pritch-slap Cho.]

Summary: my "best return for LMA" idea has shifted in the last week since the draft and Robinson trade. I don't think there's a very good chance at all that we will suck enough to keep our pick, so I'm basically punting on the tank job/grow-the-youngsters idea, unless it's a total burn-down with Wes and Nic going out also. I just don't see that happening. In that case, getting a rookie-contract good big that we can control for a while (like Griffin, Cousins, Drummond, Monroe, Noel, Len, Henson, Valanciunas, Mirotic) seems like the best case that will help us be a playoff-caliber team this year with SIGNIFICANT upside and surprise potential.

If they can put together a decent package, great, but I would rather go to a team like Orlando and see if they would be Oladipo/Vucevic and maybe a draft pick if we're lucky.

That would be amusing--he would be the fourth 2012 lottery pick on our roster. Should we then trade Batum to GSW for Biedrins/Barnes? Matthews to OKC for Lamb/PJ3? That might be a fun strategy...

I don't see them doing it. There was a rumor about them talking to Millsap, so it's a similar boat as us trading him away. Why give those two big pieces up when you can get 80 cents on the dollar and keep them.

If we are going to lose Aldridge anyway; I would try my best to guy the entire team with only Lillard and cj left. Try to get the most cap space and young talent we can afford. I'm sure there will be a disgruntled star next summer anyway. We have an opportunity to go all in with a proper rebuild. We have a ton of manageable salary talent that will help other teams around the league.

Personally I hate the idea; but there really isn't any hope if we lose out on Aldridge.

Maybe not Oladipo. Maybe we could do Vucevic and 2014 draft pick.

If we trade Aldridge there is no way we are getting equal value back. The team who gets him will need to retain enough studs to compete for a title so Aldridge resigns with them. If a team has the young talent like Orlando they won't have the veterans to make Aldridge happy. Teams with veterans such as Houston or the Spurs don't have the young talent to make us happy in a trade.

David Lee and Klay Thompson plus a draft pick is a decent offer I would be shocked if we get anything better. I would rather just keep Aldridge and "rent" him for the next two season then let him walk.

Keeping him and letting him walk is a bad idea for us because we will never get back anything remotely equal in value through free agency. Our only chance at recouping value is by trading him for young guys or draft picks. Maybe they won't be equal value now, but they at least have the chance of developing into equal value. Letting him walk will bring back nothing.

Houston has nothing I would want in exchange for Aldridge. I want Asik, but only to PAIR with Aldridge. Houston would have to get a third team involved, and then it gets too complicated. Houston will not get Aldridge unless they decide they want to trade Harden.

Reprise of hypothetical team-gutting scenario:
Aldridge to Detroit for Drummond/Villanueva (expiring)
Batum to GSW for Barnes/Biedrins (expiring)
Matthews to Toronto for Ross/Kleiza (expiring)

Roster going into 2014:
Lillard/McCollum
Ross/Crabbe/Barton
Barnes/Claver
Robinson/Freeland
Drummond/Leonard/Withey

Total 2014 salary owed: ~25.7M Who's in? :)

What about asik and horford?

If Aldridge truly wants out; then I'm 100% in.

Oh man.... we'd lose so many games

I'm just saying...add one 2014 lottery pick and one 2014 max free agent to that roster, and you could have something pretty special.

I don't get this notion of if we trade LA, we go into the tank. If we can pull Asik/Smith or Noah, or a decent combo of players, we won't be anywhere different from where we'd be with LA still here. If we can get value and still compete, I'm down for an LA trade.

I have no faith in LA as a true #1 option on a contending team anyway. It's not like Lebron leaving CLE, where once he leaves, you have to tank to rebuild. Look at what DEN did when they traded Melo. They got a whole bunch of decent talent (+ Felton) and still kept making the playoffs. And they didn't get any further with Melo.

Could you imagine if we landed wiggins with our pick, then drafted like 7 or 8 from the pick we obtained, then had over 20 mil in cap space? That would instantly turn things around.

Asik, Motiejunas, Jones, 2015 unprotected 1st

This was my list as well, but I'd aske for Parsons instead of the draft pick.

So:

Asik
Monteijunas
Jones
Parsons

... Monteijunas would be a steal, has a bright future

I really like Motiejunas. He looked pretty good in SL last year, but Houston didn't give him much burn so there must be something wrong.

Not sure he fit real well with what they did. More of an outside shooter than post presence at this point. I felt like he started getting more minutes the last half of the season. He's got tremendous hands and footwork for a big guy.

I agree. That move he busted on Leonard was impressive. Made him look like a child.
