Can we please get back to the important topic, which is PapaG trying to pick fights and then playing the victim card, while everybody else points and giggles at him?

True that. I mostly ignore his posts nowadays. They're tiresome.

I ain't a doctor...but there is no fuckin way your body can properly heal if you are a self-admitted alcoholic and drunk all the time. He has no one to blame but himself. And he should blame himself. The medical staff thing is blown out of proportion. The kid just had no one around to help guide his life.

You're no doctor but you're an alcoholic, so that makes you more qualified!

If getting drunk ruined your knees, most people Oden's age would be in wheelchairs.

I guess I don't see what he said that was so terrible. "Portland isn't a great city to live in if you're a young, African American male with a lot of money." Do we know what he meant by that? Or are we all just inferring the most damning interpretation and assuming that we're right?

Where else in the article did Oden actually blame the organization for anything? The author blamed the Blazers for several things, but what did Oden say about them? Honestly, I think you're exaggerating even by saying that he's "venting his frustrations" at Portland and the Blazers.

I expect you to want to justify your hostility toward Oden, but I just don't see anything he's done that's worthy of it.

Even though I have always been skeptical about Oden's mental toughness; i really agree with everything in this post; in particular that most of it was not quotes from Oden, but just the author's twist. And I really question if the author is being a friend to Oden. Knowing what a private person Oden is he puts this out there, presumably to promote his own career. And of course he has to make it controversial to get attention.

What I've got out of this is that the Blazers not only took a risk considering his physical history and physical condition, but they also took a risk considering his psychological condition, which must have come out in a psychological evaluation. I believe that considering both, that it was foreseeable that there would probably be problems and that makes me angry, that poor decision makers deprived me of the chance to see kevin Durant playing for my favorite team. There, I'm done with it now! I will move on.

It wouldn't surprise me if the Blazer PR people hid the real cause for his first and 2nd MF surgery.

He said himself, he was an alcoholic as early as his second year in Portland.

On that note, I'm becoming a certified foster parent with the intention of adopting and we have actually requested a black child because almost everyone wants white children and they are in short supply. The majority also wants girls so we have asked for a boy.

PGOTF?

Pretty pathetic how everyone has just taken this as an opportunity to bash on who he is as a person. Not like he didn't get enough criticism over what in some ways he can't control (injuries). Grow up guys, it's a game. Yeah he costs a lot, yeah he didn't pan out, but it's a game. He's as much of a person as anyone posting on here, and has gone through a heck of a lot more than most people do in a short time. No amount of money, women, or alcohol makes that better, because it's obvious he resorted to all three for comfort and they didn't work.

It's a proven fact that alcohol disrupts REM cycles and sleep patterns, which would in turn hinder the healing process. I thought most people knew this. I guess not.

I doubt few, if anyone would have handled the situation any differently than Oden did. I would've probably done the same. Young, rich and almost nothing to do?

He basically ruined his own career by not working as hard as he could have been to come back during those first couple years and instead party'd all the time.

But again, I probably would've done the same.

This thread still boils down to the people who are bitter about how things turned out, and the people who still think they're Greg's mommie.

Yeah, it interferes with sexual function, too, but evidence is that Oden didn't suffer overly much from that.

You are without a doubt right - alcohol hindered his recovery to some degree. However, even mentioning it as a factor is probably overstating its influence.

And, being a patron of this board, I know someone will come up with a smart-ass comment. So here's some proof.

Despite the temptation to drink off your injury and numb the pain, alcohol consumption will make things worse by prolonging your healing time. The beverage in question is a known vasodilator which opens the arteries, increasing blood flow (which is exactly what you are trying to achieve from your workouts), yet when inflammation becomes part of the equation, alcohol is our worst enemy, especially during the first 72 hours of injury occurring.

But feel free to continue to claim his alcohol use didn't help to ruin his knees.

You've got to be joking...

Professional athlete who is attempting to come back from MULTIPLE knee surgeries, a guy 7'1 no less...and you don't think it was a major influence.

There was always a shroud of mystery over Oden and his injury problems. We knew he had been seen at bars and such frequently, but I had no idea he was pretty much an alcoholic, as he himself says, until I read the article about him today.

No other pro athlete I can think of has had as much bad luck as him. But was it really all bad luck? No.

Yes, he, and he alone among pro athletes, drank. Thus alcohol must be the cause of his problems. Sure, that makes sense.

It's funny, I knew you would quote that before i even copied the link...that's why I posted MULTIPLE SOURCES of evidence in regards to the issue.

Also, that direct quote you refer to states ESPECIALLY within 72 hours. How you extracted the conclusion that 72 hours is the cutoff for alcohol hindering the healing process is beyond me.

Oh shit! I was just having a beer and my kneecap exploded! Goddamn Bridgeport IPA!

Lol, I could get the same effect banging my head against a brick wall repeatedly rather than continue to argue with you. You argue for the sole purpose of arguing, no matter how terrible your hypotheticals are.

I never once claimed alcohol caused his injuries, especially the first one. That was your own stupid logic that came up with that.

All I said was, and backed up with evidence, that it hindered the healing process. Yet you troll anyways. Hilarious.

I didn't extract that conclusion. I did, however, extract the conclusion that you are on an anti-alcohol crusade. Oden's got knee problems. He would have those problems whether or not he ever drank. Getting drunk doesn't help the healing process, sure, but it's absurd to suggest that he would have been fine if he was sober.

It is not absurd to speculate. I'm not at all against alcohol use. I'm for it :thumbs up:. But this guy was a professional athlete who was fucking paid MILLIONS of dollars. Why do you think it's OK for professional athletes to develop alcohol problems? It's not. They are paid to stay in shape. Anything less is unprofessional.

I'm not even saying that the direct effects of alcohol had much impact at all. They probably didn't. What I was trying to argue, and maybe you missed this, was that the disruption of his sleep patterns after use DID have an impact with healing. I'm not arguing that being drunk would cause problems.

Ok, I agree. On the other hand, professional athletes are pretty much anything but professional. Yes, in a perfect world, they'd avoid alcohol and various other temptations. But since they tend to be very young and very rich, they don't act that way. Is it ok? Well, it's ok with me because it's reality. If I was someone who thought that the world ought to operate according to my moral compass, I'd be plenty pissed about all sorts of things... maybe even this, although I doubt it.

I'm not even saying that the direct effects of alcohol had much impact at all. They probably didn't.

Ok, then we agree.

Ok, sure. Maybe his sleep pattern disruption caused him to blow out his knee repeatedly. But you have no evidence whatsoever that he even suffered any sleep pattern disruption.
