I'm So SICK & TIRED of Neil Olshey (1 Viewer)

Actually, I thought he gave a decent interview. He doesnt beat around the bush much and states pretty much where they are at and why. He doesnt come across like jerk or know it all imo, he's just a polished guy that knows how to communicate effectively Id never put him in the same league as slick Willy. I don't recall to many Blazer past GM's that would open up as much and do interviews like that and I agree with giving the youngsters more time and they will offset Ed's loss, imo. I agree with the strategy part about more shooters and spreading the floor more out of p&r's.
Hey, Im sure if the right deal presents itself for a playoff vet wing, he will pull the trigger and I doubt there would be any sacred cows so every is on the table, if necessary. Just my opinion, I don't he he's the slime bag many in here paint him as. Nor do I think he's is set in stone here in this great basketball market!
My issue with the youngsters offsetting the production from Davis is that even if Collins outproduces Davis from last year it doesn't provide a big enough improvement overall to lead to becoming more of a contender. Olshey himself said that the roster needed more playoff tested veterans instead of more assets. Now that he failed to bring in someone to help us earn more playoff success he is trying to pump up this young player breakout thing. CJ had a couple of big injuries his first two seasons. He likely could've become a good player his 3rd year whether it was behind Wes or as a starter. I'm all for throwing Collins to the fire. In fact I'd love it if he took over the starting PF job. However the team could've improved AND had Zach breakout too. If you really wanted to speed up his process then trade Aminu and keep Davis as the backup.

I hear what you're saying, in the interview he said they tried to get a few players for the mid level but they all wanted more and got more. It takes two parties to consummate a deal. I didn't get the since he was trying to avoid that whole question at all, he said they are still be opportunistic for a possible trade of it makes since?
Whats he supposed to say, well we didn't bring in any new player to replace Ed and he failed at singing a playoff vet that didn't want to be here, so I guess we'll just float with the guys we got and see what happens. I thought some of his comments re: make size segmentation made since. Also that their aren't that many trades that have taken place yet league wide but teams will probably;y be more active as the season starts to address rosters. This off season, and till the trade deadline definitely is weighted much more for him to get us to the next step.
If Zack and Biggie turn it up and we get sound contributions from the two minimum guys along with growth from JL and something from maybe 1 of the rooks, we could be right in there the rest of the 11teams fighting for 2-8. Id say based on the job he's done in the last 6 years he's in that tier two group that includes many like him, only a few are in tier 1 and they probably had more to work with than most gm's.

Neil's said Collins will play the 4 and 5, so I don't see how Meyers is in the rotation.

Who does WB take minutes from? Curry? There's no way.

Didn't NO say they wanted Collins to play inside more?
Which would allow Nards to play outside in like the soft big he is.
Given Nurks inconsistent play.
I just don't see Portland running a 3 big rotation.
Harkless is an option. But it would make sense for Nards and swanigan to get the first looks

wb4 has to play. Sort of like Napier from a couple years ago. Idc where. He just needs to play.

As you know I've been a huge supporter of Olshey since he's gotten here. Enough with the bullshit out of him though. He needed to improve the roster in addition to the internal growth. Olshey himself said that was the case so now he doesn't get to go back and say "nevermind, I think just the internal growth will do".

They're going to play Collins a ton, and they want him protecting the rim. I expect it to be situational, with Harkless playing small-ball 4 against smaller lineups, and Meyers playing spot minutes against bruising Centers.

Why does WB4 have to play? Since he had a good end of last season and a solid 5 SL games? And who's minutes does he take? It's not so simple as just throwing him out there.

fair enough but he said they will be opportunistic for trades, and how do you know he hasn't really done it?
Answer me this HJ? do you think he tried to sign targeted players?
I think he did but the mid level would bring us any one that would make a difference.

He's always said this, with very few results from it.

I'm not so sure he went after the types of guys he said we needed with the full tax mid-level. One guy we know is Mario Hezonja who I think still has some upside but has zero playoff games just like Stauskas and Curry. I'm guessing the other guy he pursued is Doug McDermott who like Hezonja signed for more than we could offer. I also don't think only having the Tax-MLE is a valid excuse because he was the one who put himself in that financial situation and he had an out that he said they were using like it was cap space (The Crabbe TPE) which also went unused. I gave him a pass last summer but you can't go two summers in a row looking to improve the team via trades and come up empty both times and then try and claim that you tried.

Once again this is coming from someone who has been pro-Olshey for 6 years.

Time will tell. Personally after the Fuck up of 2016 and the current Dub Dynasty I'm OK with being patient. He has until Dames contract is up to build a contender at which point I think the letter O will still be playing at an All Star level.

Welcome to the club, I’m a recent addition as well.

How many new buzzwords did this one include?

"Look" was like 5% of the words spoken. At one point he sort of malfunctioned and just added a random "look" to the end of a sentence...

At this point, Olshey is a cliché random interview generator to me. Everything he says I've heard him say before.

I'm fine with the patient route too, but not after saying he's going to be aggressive.

That was his mistake, but I actually get where he's coming from in this interview. No big time players were available and realistically acheivable, and the TPE definitely didn't have a ton of value. Maybe we could've gotten someone like Courtney Lee, but Seth Curry is better. Giving Collins some of Ed's minutes to accelerate his development makes sense too.

This thread was more based on his condescending attitude towards fans.. hopefully he continues to tune that down.

To me, aggressive doesn't mean drafting a couple of players and signing a couple of guys to minimal contracts. Those are just normal moves. I like the Curry signing and drafting Simons. Stauskas seems like a waste of a roster spot but I get why he was signed. Trent is hopefully a steal but there are reasons he slipped to the 2nd round.

Every player on the roster is someone that Olshey has acquired. If those players have no trade value that is mostly his fault. I'm just over the "it takes two to tango" excuse.

I am too, I'm getting inpatient. I just agree with creating the best product now while still trying to maximize the future at the same time. I want to trade that 2019 1st though. This draft is garbage.

This is the frustrating part to me for not using the TPE to get Trent. Take on Bayless and get the 26th pick and take him there. He'd be under contract for at least 4 years and they wouldn't have had to use part of the MLE to sign him. Trade a 2019 1st and Meyers Leonard for Trent and Koufos or Temple. Take on Wilson Chandler or Darrell Arthur for the #43 pick and then simply move up 6 spots to get Trent. Take on Jeremy Lin and pick #40 and then find a way to get up to #37. I realize that adds a lot of money in taxes but that is what being aggressive means to me. It makes me mad that we have no future picks owed to us anymore.

I think he was waiting for free agency to use it, thinking it had more value and they could get something better, which would make it worth giving up future 2nds instead.

Is he seriously mentioning Zach's points per possession against from summer league?

Also, apparently all our young guys and coaches will be going to Grgurich's camp soon.

Neil also doesn't know what "sublimate" means.

"We would have loved to have gotten a veteran wing who would have been our 6th or 7th guy. Wouldn't have happened in FA. We were caught off guard. We thought the AC TPE would have huge value in the league. out there. Teams not giving up quality players like in the past. Teams weren't willing give up players to get more caproom as in the past."

Not only that but he has already traded our own 2019 and 2020 second round picks. And we didn't have a second round pick in 2017 when there were some good guys available.

I know you have been a supporter of Neils and I too have become somewhat concerned about what this next season brings as I view it as highly weighted as to weather to make big time changes, which would include GM,Coach and/or players.
If he can orchestrate a deal between now and lets say dec for that missing balanced piece, it could make a huge difference in this team taking that next step. I think the next several months the trade market will heat up even more as teams are forced to make more impact decisions one day or the other. I also think that CJ or Dame will be part of "THE DEAL" lol, if it comes about.
Its going to be fun to look back in a years time and see just how right and/or wrong we all have been about the rise or doom of this team!

Since 90% of the TPE around the league expire without being used, I'm suprised that NO believed that it had a lot of value (based on yesterday's interview). To me that was a clear indication that he struggles understanding the dynamics of the 'marketplace'.

then he goes on & says that the plan of giving up assets for cap space is a 'fools errand' for 90% of the league. It looks like he was trying to find a fool to be able to acomplish his FA plans.

Right or wrong this part seemed really obvious to me. Not sure why some thought it was about money.

  1. Olshey was very blunt about the reasons for not bringing back Ed Davis and it had very little to do with money. It's all about clearing more playing time for Collins. They didn't want to bring Davis back and then cut his role and playing time. Collins' ability to "spread the floor and pass out of the high post" is a big plus for a team that seems finally to be dealing with its shortage of long-distance shooters.

They're going to play Collins a ton, and they want him protecting the rim. I expect it to be situational, with Harkless playing small-ball 4 against smaller lineups, and Meyers playing spot minutes against bruising Centers.

I believe wb4 can guard 1-3 against most teams.
So when Turner plays like ass, or harkless goes Mia. I expect to see wb4 in getting minutes.
But I also expected better coaching from stotts in the playoffs.
So who know what will happen. Maybe we'll see Nik.:deadhorse:

I wasn't sold on wb4 last year. But his defense alone should get him minutes.

Sorry for slow replies
I have to be careful with electronics.
