The sooner you homers come to the realization that Batum is just a hot/cold player the better. His jumper is either falling or it's not. If it's not it's ugly (look at his December FG% BEFORE "injury"). That's what happens when you only shoot jumpers.

I also love the "injury" excuse. Wes, Aldridge, etc were all asked about being banged up last year, about Nic, etc, and both basically said "everyone is banged up". No excuses for these two.

I didn't say he couldn't play or that he sucked. He is a nice player and I like him. But, to be an elite wing, you have to be able to control the ball in traffic CONSISTENTLY and either finish at a high percentage or make a pass.

Too often Batum passes up going into traffic. Why? Because it isn't a high percentage play for him. He is usually better off with the open jumper.

Thus, the game of Batum is what we see.

Defensively, I think he's gotten worse every year, not better. His first year he was a pretty damn good defender. I think I've been most disappointed in that respect.

I don't expect the guy to average 20 ppg, and I love that he was putting up triple doubles, but I just want to see some consistency and better overall defense.

A wrist/hand injury doesn't affect your motor or ability to try. Injury is a given in the NBA, but his 'effort' after his wrist injury was pathetic.
He totally mailed it in, for the majority of the season, post injury.
He could take some lessons from Lillard, who knows how to play the game on & off the court.

His rookie year, he seemed to have at least one, sometimes a few, lane picks that he'd go coast-to-coast with. He doesn't seem to do that as much now. I think he still has "that" in him when he desires, but that's not enough to call him a great defender.

He was playing really well last year up to the point where he got injured. If he could play at the level that he already showed he could achieve, the Blazers will benefit greatly. It's just a matter of him not getting hurt or learning to play through the pain; which is easier said than done.

I think reaction timing is tied into focus, which is tied into intensity. Basically, if you play with a laissez-faire attitude, then you're not going to react as quickly as if you are dialed in and intent on not letting the other guy beat you. IMO, it all comes down desire, and I don't think he has it.

However, I also don't subscribe to the theory that that is a characteristic that you either have or don't have. Everybody experiences that circumstance where their pride is insulted to the point where they are determined to prove their detractors wrong. I keep hoping that will happen with him.

As I said before, part of it is on him, but another part of it is on the coaches. We'd all love another Pip, for whom you'd never have to run a play. He'd fill in all the missing parts himself, and end up spreading numbers across the box score (points, rebs, assists, steals, blocks and a great +/-). However, I think for a year or two, we need to FEED Nico. Make him a focus of the offense, perhaps at the expense of some of Lillard's scoring.

I think he could approach Deng-like numbers and make life much easier for LA (if he stays) and Dame.

That's just basketball 101 though. When you have a backstop you can take more chances. You still have to be smart but this holds true to any team.

I thought it was 8ppg last season, but it was around 16-18 points. I was corrected by BNM or someone. Still it was atrocious. Wright and T. Rob should be able to cover at least 15 ppg. We have CJ, Leonard, Claver to cover 20 ppg. Lopez may take a dip from hickson's PPG, but I expect Matthews, Lillard and Batum to have increases in scoring.

We are in good shape.
