The Trail Blazers have been granted a $2.86M injury exception for Rodney Hood, league source tells ESPN.
So what’s next? Who do we sign?
Can he? His last two seasons he's been at 33% from 3.Given our total lack of bench scoring, I say give Jamal Crawford a call. Yeah, he's 39 years old, but he can still shoot.

Do you consider 39.7% FG and 33.2% 3PT FG last year is still being able to shoot?Given our total lack of bench scoring, I say give Jamal Crawford a call. Yeah, he's 39 years old, but he can still shoot.
Now that the exception has been granted there is nothing wrong with having a thread to discuss how to use it. The problem is a lot of people have him on ignore so they won't see this thread anyway.

It's sad that you're probably right that a 39 year old who was terrible last year would actually help this team.

Is it crazy that I actually really like this idea?Let's see if DWade wants to play with Melo.
Why can't I see this reply? Now that the exception has been granted there is nothing wrong with having a thread to discuss how to use it. The problem is a lot of people have him on ignore so they won't see this thread anyway.
With this particular exception we should use it for a trade or to claim a player off waivers. There is still a roster spot available for signing a free agent too!Yeah, yeah. And Carmelo can't play anymore either.
I'm glad to hear suggestions for other free agents who are available.
This was mentioned in another thread but Alec Burks or Glen Robinson from GS for a future 2nd is probably the most likely scenario. GS needs a roster spot to sign Ky Bowman and is hard capped so they could use the financial relief. It might only take a protected 2nd rounder or the rights to a foreign dude that will never play at this point.I spent way too much time researching this and I didn't include a few obvious non-targets but here is the list of players that would qualify for the Blazers to acquire via trade:
DeAndre Bembry
Vince Carter
Tyrone Wallace (was just waived so he'd be a free agent)
Brad Wanamaker
David Nwaba
Wilson Chandler
Dwayne Bacon
Shaquille Harrison
Alfonzo McKinnie
JJ Barea
Ryan Broekhoff
Malik Beasley (Would be my #1 target if it didn't cost much to trade for him)
Torey Craig
Tim Frazier
Alec Burks
Glenn Robinson
Thabo Sefolosha
Jakarr Sampson
Patrick Patterson
Derrick Walton Jr
Jared Dudley
Troy Daniels
Bruno Caboclo
Dillon Brooks
Deanthony Melton
Derrick Jones
Pat Connaughton
Kyle Korver
Sterling Brown
Shabazz Napier
Treveon Graham
Jordan Bell
Frank Jackson
Damyean Dotson
Michael Carter-Williams
Wesley Iwundu
Trey Burke
Raul Neto
Jevon Carter
Bryn Forbes
Rondae Hollis-Jefferson
Malcolm Miller
Emmanuel Mudiay
Jeff Green
Royce O'Neal
Jordan McRae
Isaiah Thomas
Damian Jones
Willy Hernangomez
Ante Zizic
Christian Wood
Marqueese Chriss
Tyson Chandler
Alize Johnson
Dwight Howard
Udonis Haslem
Noah Vonleh
Jahlil Okafor
Kenrich Williams
Nerlens Noel
Kyle O'Quinn
Harry Giles
Caleb Swanigan (lol)

Another thought everyone will hate, but I wouldn't be opposed to JR SmithI'm glad to hear suggestions for other free agents who are available.
@BonesJones brought up a good question about him yesterday. Do you think he's the type of guy who after not playing for a year and a half is still in basketball shape? He might be but I wouldn't bet money on it.Another thought everyone will hate, but I wouldn't be opposed to JR Smith
What media member doesn't? Other than the true Clownzano.Jaynes is a clown. He kisses Neils ass
I wouldn't have put money on Melo being in shape, but I was way wrong on that.@BonesJones brought up a good question about him yesterday. Do you think he's the type of guy who after not playing for a year and a half is still in basketball shape? He might be but I wouldn't bet money on it.
Melo posts weekly videos on his website and to me he looked in great shape all summer and up to the point we signed him. I suspect it's pretty rare for cases like Melo where they are in game shape immediately after being out an extended time.I wouldn't have put money on Melo being in shape, but I was way wrong on that.
As for Smith, I have absolutely no idea. I'd certainly be curious to find out.

I posted a huge list. Those last two options are pretty limited in their availability since the player has to be in the last year of his contract and has to meet salary restrictions.
The list I posted were players on other teams for trades, not free agents.the vet minimum for a 10-year vet is a shade under 2.6M. This injury exception is only 300K above the minimum. If the Blazers had any real interest in any of these guys, they probably would have been signed to the vet minimum already, especially considering that Portland would only have to pay 1.6M and that's the amount that would be taxed
seems like the exception could be saved to see who is waived around and after the trade deadline. Or, Portland could just use the exception in a trade
but if the Blazers maxed out the exception, it could cost them as much as 10M in salary and tax. I'm not sure any player would be worth that
Most buyout guys sign for the minimum because when they're bought out there is usually language in the agreement that offsets if they sign for more than the minimum elsewhere. So players wouldn't typically see any extra money even if they signed for more than the minimum.looking at guys that fit that teams would probably give away for minimal returns, Tyson Chandler. Harry Giles is intriguing but that’s more of a summer move. We need someone that can step in immediately.
Best plan though would be to wait for the buyout market, as the DPE is worth more than what other teams can offer.
I still have doubts that Portland is willing to add a 15th player though.
I hate it.Another thought everyone will hate, but I wouldn't be opposed to JR Smith
