Rumor: The iPhone 5’s Killer Secret Feature Is Amazing Voice Control

9to5Mac is claiming some giant news about the next iPhone. The specs aren't shocking: a generous 1 GB of RAM and the iPad 2's A5 processor. But what Apple's going to push hardest is Assistant: your iPhone talks to you.
From 9to5Mac's explanation based on "people familiar with the feature and SDK findings," Siri-powered Assistant is going to be spectacularly helpful:

One can say make appointment with Mark Gurman for 7:30 PM and Assistant will create the appointment in the user's calendar. On noting events, Assistant also allows users to set reminders for the iOS 5 Reminders application. For example, a user could say "remind me to buy milk when I arrive at the market." Another example would be integration with the iOS Maps application. A user could ask: "how do I get to Staples Center?" and Assistant will use the user's current location via GPS and provide directions.

Another interesting Assistant feature is the ability to create and send an SMS or iMessage with just your voice. For example, you can say "send a text to Mark saying I'll be running late to lunch!" – and it will send.

And that's just part of it. Once Assistant is triggered by holding down the Home Button for a couple of seconds, you'll be able to engage in a HAL 9000-style conversation with the phone itself. Ask it to send an email to your friend Adrian—it'll ask you which email address you want to use. Whenever you give it an order, Assistant will check with you to make sure it's doing the best job possible, like a little handheld secretary.

But it's not only about you and your iPhone chatting it up: 9to5Mac says Assistant will usher in a giant social feature with "Find My Friends," all executed with your voice. It's dead simple. "Where's Adrian?" Your phone will show you Adrian on the map, assuming Adrian's privacy settings allow it.

Finally, there's Wolfram Alpha baked into Assistant. Wolfram Alpha is the equivalent of an extremely nerdy, always-right friend who knows everything. And now Assistant is that genius friend. Ask your iPhone for the GDP of Libya: it'll tell you. Ask your iPhone how many feet from the Earth Jupiter is. It'll tell you. Wolfram Alpha support gives you an enormous trove of instant knowledge, invaluable for work, school, or just winning an argument with your friend.

Android's had pretty good integrated voice commands based on Google juices, but if Assistant lives up to these claims, it sounds like it'll blow it away. It's hard to imagine a software feature being the coolest thing about the iPhone 5—and again, these claims are all unconfirmed until Tim Cook shines down upon us—but Assistant has the potential to make the iPhone 5 incredible. If it's real.....

the voice text feature could lead to more wiener situations

I think for ABM, social media is for the express reason of getting more "weiner situations"

The GF and I were at the beach for a good part of last week. I have to be real careful with the cell phone around.

Doesn't sound much different from what android has been able to do for months...

Lol epic fail Apple. Yet the masses will flock to it and gobble it up.

And yes, I am an iPhone owner.

Fail? Really? In what way? I'm curious......and, no, not an iPhone owner.

Thanks

Like Run said, sounds like what the Droid system has been doing since it came out. C'mon Apple, hit us with something better.

Many Android phones have "out-speced" iPhone for a while now:
+Bigger screens
+4g
+Faster Processors
+Flash Support
+SD Storage
etc....

To many people these things just don't matter. It comes down to the UI and software and Apple has done a better job with that IMO.

I haven't seen anything in the new iPhone that makes me want to go out and buy one. Most of the rumored features are already on Android phones.

Have you seen what Apple's net worth is these days?

If Apple is putting out a product that is already out there and can still dominate the market the way they are, that is anything but an epic fail . . . in fact that situation sounds more like an epic marketing success.

I got a free iphone 3 a few months ago when I broke my phone. My contract ended this month actually, and I talked myself into getting a phone with the Droid OS. the Iphone is nice for the purpose it serves. But Safe to say it will be a long time before I go back to Iphone. I am enjoying Droid much moreso.

Question from someone who isn't a tech person and went with the iphone because that is what everyone is doing and I didn't want to fall out of touch with the current tech trends: What I surprising liked about the iphone is any app I downloaded from itunes on my home computer or Ipad I transefered over to my iphone. Can you do that with the droid?

What I don't like about the iphone is the typing (but getting used to it), the battery life and the RECEPTION is terrible.

What I like about the iphone, very user friendly and has made media sharing very simple compared to my past smart phone.

I have an old flip phone. No texting. No applications. But it does ring and I can talk to people with it. It's all I want. I see so many people whose iphone, smart phone, or whatever the hell they're called, just run their lives. It's an addiction.

No thanks. I'll be blissfully ignorant of it all.

People without cell phones could say the same thing . . . I see people with cell phones always answering or talking on their cell phones to the point it runs their lives. I'll pass.

I think these modern devises simply your life, not run them.

people who voice command unnecessarily on phones are fucking dumb shits. i guess if you're driving its ok or something but people look like such tards doing so in public. happened at a meeting, some guy was trying to show us some restaurant recommendation and voice spoke it, didn't really work that well.

My iPhone4 already has a lot of voice activated features, this just seems to add to what it already does.

Good point.

How do you pronounce "iPhone"? I can think of at least 3 ways.

I'm so cool I know the answer, of course. I'm just asking for the older neophytes among us.
