Is it me or have fans begun jumping ship?

He questioned mine. I just wanted to send the message he's not the only one who has been a fan since Day One.

A fan is also happy when we succeed. We've had a lot of success over the past few years. You're never happy. That's not being a fan; it's being whiny.

A) I disagree with your point of view, but I never questioned your fandom.

B) Once again, you are being very selective. Last season, when the team was often "winning ugly", how often was I the guy who said "there is no such thing as a bad win." There were people who turned game threads into a bitch fest even when the team won - but I sure as hell wasn't one of them.

I have not seen a single post from you where it appears you derive any positive enjoyment from this franchise. You appear to be one of those sad people who only are truly happy when they're bitching.

Some people need calm down and not act like we have to be blowing sunshine up each others ass on daily basis in order to be a 'true fan'.

Agreed. However, the contest to see who can more cynically denounce any news we receive is not the answer. That is what we have here. Right here, right now. The [/MB] picture posts, the Ass Clown name calling, the scoffing, the laughing out loud at an all-player meeting. That the team recognizes their problems and is concerned is met with a resounding jeer. It's a race to the bottom, seriously.

You are as guilty as anyone of this, so I'd invite you to tone it down, and quit calling the least bit of optimism "blowing sunshine up our asses" -- it's that kind of polarizing language that eliminates any middle ground.

I think your mistaken. I'm one of the biggest optimists in this joint.

For someone that is so nit-picky about how people should be a "fan" around here, you sure don't post much. When you do, it has something to do with clueing people into how they should act as a fan.

Bring something different to the board if you want it to be rainbows and butterflies all the time.

Whatever. I understand your anger about the team - I am just not sure why you are directing it at me. :dunno:

I have tried, and recently too, to walk my talk because people said the same thing: post better and better posts will follow. But there doesn't seem to be a market for my style of posts:

There's more, and I used to do a lot more of this type of post, where I consider things and write a considered post after thinking about it, but what's the point when all I get back is sarcasm and nitpicking about how many threads there are on the forum? Much better to become a character, to grouse about not drafting Chris Paul or something at any opportunity, rather than attempt any semblance of substance here.

The unfortunate (from my perspective, but not necessarily from everyone's) reality is that internet forums are more of a competitive form of debate (like a less rigorous, less rules-based debate club in high school) rather than a discussion-oriented medium. Exceptions abound, of course, but the vast majority of internet debate is about winning the debate or shutting down your opponent, in my experience. And I have certainly been a part of that in my internet life but I've tried to move further and further away from it.

That's why there's less market for the type of posts you like. Unless you establish a very small forum composed entirely of friends, you won't get that. Any large forum will end up a competitive striving. You just have to decide whether that's worth it to you to get different opinions and share your thoughts with lots of people you wouldn't normally have access to.

It's really funny you mention that; the only other forum I'm a member of is closed, and consists of 30 friends who have been in contact for about 10 years.

Now, this forum as it stands now is not like that, but it kind of is, as well. I mean, there's more than a few of us who have been in contact since the mid 90's, when we were a mailing list... and I think it's mostly them who count among the ones dissatisfied with the discourse here; those who came from O-Live or some other modern forum environment are fine with it.

And yes, I did try to gather them up and put them in their own forum, and it kind of worked for a while, but some dumbass let MIXUM find it and it all basically collapsed in on itself. :ghoti:

I understand your point, and I can't really disagree. Right now, a lot of us are going through the equivalent of an extended period of mourning. The frustration, anger, and denial are interfering with reasonable discussion. At some point, most of us will reach acceptance - and things will get better.

On a personal note, I can understand why some people find my posting style too blunt and sarcastic. Sarcasm and (attempted) humor are my way of coping. I will make an effort to be more diplomatic.

Those were some fun and informative threads. This board is fun when posters can give opinions supported by data, and then be challenged on those opinions with something more than 'u r so stoopid' or 'Fuck Brandon Roy'. I notice that I authored some lengthy posts in those threads, and was even the originator of one of the threads. I understand your point about putting forth the effort to research and then writing a long post with hyperlinks to specific data, only to have some snarky one-liner as a response, and seeing the thread devolve from the point forward. I've experienced it, and I've surely been guilty of it, but that just seems to be the way things go when a poster's personality is more important than the opinion being brought forth.

It's much easier to find a target (Choo Choo/Ass Clown/Miller (my target)/Aldridge/Brandon Fucking Roy/Nic/kpee/Vulcans/Comcast/Durant) and obsess over it and over it and over it and over it and...

Totally understand; I'm as sarcastic as they come IRL. :)

I tend to overuse smiley faces to counter my sarcasm online... I totally lean on the :D and :ghoti: emoticons to make sure people know I'm just being a joker.

Not once have I bitched and whined about not drafting Paul, Durant, firing KP, hiring Cho....yada yada yada.

However, I feel strongly towards the fact that a huge reason we aren't tough as a team has to do with how soft Aldridge is. Also, I occasionally I bring up that McMillan is not a good coach. But, I hardly beat the dead horse on those things (ok maybe Aldridge).

To say I'm as guilty as anyone though, is just wrong.

Most people just don't have time to read lengthy posts, in my experience.

Ideally we'd have brief AND cogent/interesting/effective posts, but that's a tough thing.

Who was it that said, "I'd have written less, but I lacked the time?"

I used to NEVER use them, just as a matter of principle. In the last few years, though, as I've chatted more and as I've tried to be more effective communicating what I'm thinking and feeling (rather than just what I'm thinking) I kinda go overboard on the smilies, too.

Lincoln, I believe.

It's true the length is a deterrent, but I feel like I only get one post to present my full thoughts on a subject without mitigation; if I split those up or didn't show the analysis, the post would be discounted for being poorly thought out. Basically, you can't win around here. :D

I don't mind the long posts as long as they're not rambling.

I've been thinking about my post from a few days ago and decided I owed you an apology. I wanted to do it publicly rather than through a PM. Sometimes I cross the line and am a complete dick.

I apologize. We're all fans in our own way.

Classy, dude, seriously.

Also, I'd like to retract just about everything I said. I'll be in line for a lifeboat if you need me. :ghoti:

Thank you.

We all get frustrated and need to vent sometimes. It only bothered me because I do respect your opinion.

I'm sorry as well. As I said above, I *do* understand that my posting style can grate on people - and I will make an effort to tone it down.

It's because you're such a dry heartless lawyer. :devilwink:
