Wow, it's fast, strong proof that bringing back Jackie Z for an extra year was a huge mistake. He just mortgaged the future of the M's in an attempt to save his own job.
How is this "mortgaging the future"? He's done nothing other than set a 50M floor of salary for the next 6 years around Felix and Cano. The M's left 11M of salary room on the budget last year (84M paid vs. 95M budget) because no one would take their money. There's no salary cap. They've made a profit every single year save one for the last decade, have the national TV money starting this year and have their own RSN deal for about 30M a year starting up. Lincoln's told Jack Z that they could go up to 95M on the budget, and over if there's star power involved. I'd say Cano/Price? qualify.
Put it this way: If this was for, say 10M a year, the M's would be ecstatic to get an All-Star hitter on his way to the HoF. Yeah, 14M more a year is an overpay. But who else is taking their money if Cano isn't on board? This is for recruiting as much as anything else.
They couldn't get Fielder, Hamilton, Yu, etc., even throwing "overpay" money at them. When they said they'd match the Angels offer to Hamilton, he said he wanted to play in LA.
As for "the overpay" aspect and the "bad contract" aspect, Pujols, Hamilton, Fielder would've all been the best hitter on the M's last year, even at their bloated contracts and long-term deals.
