Is Robinson Cano going to the Mariners?

Wow, it's fast, strong proof that bringing back Jackie Z for an extra year was a huge mistake. He just mortgaged the future of the M's in an attempt to save his own job.

How is this "mortgaging the future"? He's done nothing other than set a 50M floor of salary for the next 6 years around Felix and Cano. The M's left 11M of salary room on the budget last year (84M paid vs. 95M budget) because no one would take their money. There's no salary cap. They've made a profit every single year save one for the last decade, have the national TV money starting this year and have their own RSN deal for about 30M a year starting up. Lincoln's told Jack Z that they could go up to 95M on the budget, and over if there's star power involved. I'd say Cano/Price? qualify.

Put it this way: If this was for, say 10M a year, the M's would be ecstatic to get an All-Star hitter on his way to the HoF. Yeah, 14M more a year is an overpay. But who else is taking their money if Cano isn't on board? This is for recruiting as much as anything else.

They couldn't get Fielder, Hamilton, Yu, etc., even throwing "overpay" money at them. When they said they'd match the Angels offer to Hamilton, he said he wanted to play in LA.

As for "the overpay" aspect and the "bad contract" aspect, Pujols, Hamilton, Fielder would've all been the best hitter on the M's last year, even at their bloated contracts and long-term deals.

Like I said, for the near future it's great. If we can find one more average bat to protect Cano in the lineup, and get Price from TB (unlikely..) that would make it a formidable team.

Felix/Price/Kuma as a 1,2,3 with at least a decent lineup (Cano, Seager isn't bad...) We'll see.

I wouldn't call it great, but it's not bad. But after 5 years....... it's going to be a killer. To pay that much for maybe 5 solid years....... It's like saying he's worth $35-40MM per season for 5 years, then the rest over the last five. I'd have rather seen the M's pay him $35 per for 5 years than $240 for 10.

Yanks have to be laughing at this one (and I despise the Yanks). It's the Cards-Pujols situation over again. That one big bat isn't likely going to be the difference in the end. If you're going to overpay, overpay for pitching.

They're going after Beltran as well, maybe they figured out they need to start putting butts in seats with the Seacocks and even Sounders being more popular than them.

No to Beltran and yes to Napoli.

Also nothing has been confirmed

It's FANTASTIC in the short term in a win now.

We have Felix/Kuma/Paxton/Walker as a damn good foursome (Though 2 are really inexperienced, it still helps 2-3 years down). And for an FA, not having to trade any of your starting pitching and have chips in Franklin for trade to upgrade somewhere else... It works for a win soon approach.

Then, 4 years after that it sucks as he is now DHing every day.

If only hultzen wasn't out all year

Btw there are some rumors about a walker and franklin swap for David Price. If we could lock him up long term then I would do it.

I don't buy that the M's will bump their payroll to the levels we've seen in the past, which means this deal will likely preclude other deals. I don't think it makes sense given where the M's roster is. Cano is the lipstick on the pig. Lol, I'd love to be wrong about that and see some of the M's prospects start to produce, but my usual optimistic outlook is starting to get pessimistic that they'll pan out.

It's a historically huge contract and I don't have faith that his production will continue anywhere near where it has, playing in homer friendly Yankee Stadium. The fact that Pujols and Hamilton wouldve been better than any M's player says more about how bad the M's have been than anything else.

Edit: Brian, for what it's worth, I'd love for you to be right and me to be wrong. I'm a Cubs fan first and it's been brutal watching both squads struggle in a similar way. Theo is sitting on cash and could make big splashes, but he's waiting for the young guys to develop and will throw down the money when the time is right. That makes more sense to me than what the M's are doing. That said, rumors are that Theo is about to spend big dollars to sign a Japanese pitcher, so maybe his approach is about to change.

at the time Pujols and Hamilton signed those deals they were ELITE hitters. so it wouldn't have said anything about the mariners. they'd walk in and be the best player on almost every team in the league. of course now they aren't but, hindsight 20-20

I'm kinda excited. I want to see if Cano will make Seagar, Smoak, Franklin, and Ackley better.

While I think that Ackley is passable in CF for now (especially if he gets his hitting stroke back), I don't see us holding on to Cano and Ackley AND Franklin at 2B. Which sucks, b/c I kind of like Nick. But I kind of like having perennial top-5 MVP candidates more. Just sayin'.

I think Franklin would be fine at SS. Though I do like Miller.

Well at least we have trade pieces.

Yeah. I like Franklin a lot. We still need speed at the top of our lineup... that's what we're missing.

I have no idea if this is a good signing or not. But since it's the M's it's probably not.

Might be good in the short term, guaranteed to be horrible long term

That has become the default response to pretty much anything the Mariners organization does.

Kind of like "Mikey likes it!" but instead of the seal of approval, it's the seal the death.

A power hitting second basemen like that is amazing... it just isn't a position you find many players like that. I just participated in a baseball draft for baseball sim called APBA Baseball http://apbagames.com/ and I had him target with my #1 pick at pick 9... but he was picked 8th. Shit.

Actually, the 2B position has really turned around in the last several years. There are a lot of young stars that have a nice slg%. Looking at park factors, you can see the Yankee Stadium is in the top 10 for Hr's while Safeco is in the bottom 10.

If it was a guy whose power was of the "towering fly ball that goes over a fence" variety, I'd be less bully on this.

But Cano has shown power to all fields, and is more of a "line drive that goes over the fence" variety. The HRs he loses will most likely be made up in increased XBH to the gaps--which are much bigger at Safeco than Yankee Stadium.

They're a train wreck franchise, but at least stuff like this makes them a fun train wreck to watch.
Yeah, they may be a train wreck, but they usually get that train going pretty close to full speed before they wreck it, lol...
