It's Calabro!!!!!

For those who think Chris McGowan is out of touch with the local fan base, you may want to consider this:

It's mid-June. The Blazers were eliminated from the playoffs over a month ago, we don't have a pick in this draft and this forum is blowing up talking about the product he is selling.

Until yesterday, all we had to talk about were players in other markets kicking people in the balls and throwing their mouth guard at fans. Now, this place is abuzz with talk about the Blazers. The
Mike and Mike are OUT? Same with 'Tone. thread is 35 pages and still going strong. The It's Calabro!!!!! thread is at 11 pages and going like gangbusters. Who will the Blazers hire to replace the Mikes? is at 9 pages and we also have several other threads related to this news (Stealing Rip City,
How we as a fanbase can be more Seattle inclusive.,
My theory on the future of Blazer broadcasting).

I'd say he knows us pretty well.

And for those paranoid about the Blazers hiring a "Seattle guy", I guarantee there are a LOT more people discussing the Trail Blazers in Portland right now than there are in Seattle.

I don't necessarily like the guy, but you have to admit, he knows how to keep his product on the minds of his customers. With no draft pick, this place would normally be a ghost town, but instead the place is blowing up with talk about his product.

Cool. I wonder who he'll fire next year so we can talk about it. This guy is brilliant

Good job not answering the question again.

Are people in this forum going to watch more games because they hired this Cerebro guy? I don't think so.

I believe they will. Like the hire, or hate the hire, I think people will tune it to see what the new guy is like. I think our preseason ratings will be higher. And, it's not just this forum. We're a pretty captive market of die hard fans, but I think anything that improves the overall quality of the viewer experience will be good for the team in the long run.

As long as who he hires is an upgrade, what's the problem?

Weren't you one of the ones who wanted Nate fired? Should we have kept him around forever for sentimental reasons?

What about players, are we not allowed to trade or waive them because a minority of the fans might miss them? Jlprk still misses J.J. Hickson. I don't. Will you be upset of they don't resign Leonard? I think not.

I know player move are not McGowan's turf, justr pointing out that change isn't always a bad thing.

Keep Mr. Sonic> LOL, yes, that's EXACTLY what I wanted

I am going to stand by the notion that the team believes this team is going to be entering the national spotlight very soon, and they wanted to bring a little more clout to the table. I liked Mike and Mike, but it was their goofiness that was funny, not their actual ability to call the game. Runner up GM of the Year, Runner up Coach of the year. Add to that bringing in the Nation PBP for ESPN radio, a guy most NBA fans are aware of, home freaking run. You all can keep bashing McGowan for the sequence of how you read things, but frankly he's doing a pretty good job. He came in and re "portlandized" the in stadium experience by getting the local places in on the concourse for food options. He's been there while solid improvements to make the fan experience instead of just squeezing more people in have been made. Meanwhile people in here want to bury theur heads in the sand fearing change.

Guess what new uniforms 2017-2018, be ready for it, it's going to happen. The Franchise is starting to finally send the message that this is a new Blazers franchise. And it's about time because this "we are little old Portland" routine is lame. CHris is also working his butt off to try and land an ASG. We can't have a mom and pop mentality for that to happen.

That was my point, change isn't always bad. Firing Nate was the right thing to do. Stotts has been a big improvement. I wasn't a huge fan of the Stotts hire at the time, but he's so much better than Nate that I came on board very quickly. I think if folks give Calabro a chance, they will soon come to realize he's an upgrade. The guy calls the finals for ESPN for a reason. He's good at what he does.

Calabro is good and all, but I was happy with the Mikes, and I don't like how the axe fell. But let's put some of Paul Allen's money to work: now we need to get a proper D-League team and have the Mikes hired with the same pay they always had to comment. Let's class up the D-League! And it can be in Seattle, at the Key Arena, to make Sonics fans happy (and rub their noses in Blazer success).
That's a fucking brilliant plan

God I hope he doesn't bring Hubie with him. Hubie is flat out unbearable. And wrong, most of the time. I think Hubie watches games by Braile.

I will never forgive Hubie Brown for repeatedly calling Terry Porter "Kevin" during the finals.

Not to mention the press release from McGowan was very cold.

And THIS is what I was mad at.

Do people understand what I was mad at?

I'm over it now, anyway. People just failed to realize what bothered me, and kept thinking it was one thing when it was THIS.

I'm done explaining myself, 1) because people never got it and 2) I'm over the Mcgowan thing.

At least he hired someone good.

I'm not following. Entering the national spotlight? What does that even mean? How was a professional team not in the national spotlight, and if it wasn't, how does changing broadcasters suddenly make those who were unaware of the Trailblazers aware of them, let alone care about them? It certainly doesn't make it a bigger market, or make Portland less weird, and it will certainly not influence whether an all-star game is played in Portland. The franchise is the same today as it was two days ago, just without two beloved TV personalities. An announcer isn't going to convert Seattle fans, just like if Mike and Mike became the Laker announcers we wouldn't suddenly become Laker fans.

What's done is done, moving on, but acting like this is going to make Portland a national brand, or somehow give them more clout, is just plain delusional.

Wish I could give more than one like to this.

McGowan was brought in to freshen up and grow the brand. I think he's done an amazing job of balancing the local die hard fan experience and looking to expand in the future.
