Last night PBS had 2 excellent specials on the JFK assassination. The first was by Nova on the forensics of the assassination and the 2nd one was by Secrets of the Dead on Walter Cronkite's coverage that day.

The thing that makes conspiracy theories work is that the guys who stand to make money writing books, etc., spew so many "facts" that take a decent amount of time to refute. And if not refuted they claim the conspiracy is true.

When refuted, they make up more "facts."

And so it goes.

You'd think the reverse would be true - when enough of the theory is shot full of holes, people would figure the rest is bullshit, too.

Watch the PBS thing. I happened to see it yesterday.

Nothing but scientific proof Oswald acted alone.

They shot a bullet from an identical gun through 3 feet thick of pine boards stacked together. It came out pristine.

They shot bullets through skulls and other things that mimic bone and muscle and the bullets tumbled and made holes in wood and fabric exactly like they were on JFK's and Connoly's clothing.

Eye witness testimony is unreliable, so you can't rely on it when the recordings and science and reenactments tell the real story.

I've read a couple of the books and so forth and they all have some interesting theories, but zero proof.

But of all the things surrounding conspiracy theories with respect to JFK, the one thing that I have always wanted to know was why Ruby shot Osald and then never talked about it. I can let all the other theory stuff go as sensationalists making money off the assassination, but all the controversy surrounding that makes me wonder. At the end of the day, I think he was a nut who acted alone.

They held a congressional hearing and investigation on this in the 70s that concluded there was likely more than one gunman. But I suppose it depends on what you call "reputable". You can say someone has a bad reputation just because you don't like what they're saying, but if you're an intelligent person you look at the evidence itself.

The 2nd gunman theory was deduced from the recording of a motorcycle cop's open mic. The recording was so noisy it is dubious that you could tell if there was the supposed gunshot.

That was discussed in the Nova program.

I thought it was hilarious that since he was a Navy man the Navy insisted on doing the autopsy when they weren't trained to do criminal investigative autopsies.
