Jimmy Butler wants out? (He does.)

Yes, that's the risk. With the path you'd prefer, the same risk exists...it just takes multiple years to find out. I'd like to know sooner. Also, given Butler's demonstrated performance, and the odds of those picks panning out, as well as Olshey's overall track record on trades, I think a lot of things would have to work out for a wait-and-see approach to bring results.

All that said, the discussion is moot if MIN isn't interested in anything we're offering, and I think that's the case.
You're assuming Neil will be here after this season. I'm assuming otherwise. ;)
I'm of the mind that we'll have a new GM and coach before we contend.

Ahh, that would make a difference. If not trading for Jimmy results in Olshey's departure, that might be a reason to prefer that outcome...

However, if Collins and/or Simons pan out in relatively short order, it's unlikely that Neil goes anywhere.

Probably the most likely scenario. It’s the simplest answer, so it’s probably the closest to the truth. Olshey probably told Minnesota you can have anyone outside Dame, CJ, and Collins (Nurk isn’t eligible) and thibs probably said thanks bye.

It has taken me a good year and a half to climb out of my pit of utter disdain for Olshey, but if I find out that what kept us from Jimmy-fucking-Butler is Zach-fucking-Collins, I'm going to fall right back in!

I get why Butler is a bad idea. And I think all those things. However, I simultaneously imagine a Dame, CJ, Butler, Chief, Nurk starting lineup and I get borderline giddy. Craziness aside, Butler would slot us inches from if not above Houston, in my opinion, with the potential to beat every single team in the NBA in a seven game series. I really believe that.

They will start off well and then they will falter around the trade deadline as rumors heat up.

Prop, Im just not sure Id give up Collins but I'd give up Jake, Simons, and/or Trent plus Mo and/or Turner.
Im not convinced the wolves would trade him to the same division. You'd need to include CJ and some for that to happen.

Different scenarios. Ed's game was limited and really not going to change the trajectory of the teams future. Trading CJ (or a combo of Collins/Simons, etc) would potentially set the franchise back several steps.
Yes, there is a potential there to take 1-2 steps back. But there is also a potential to move 3-4 steps further along than we ever could have reached with CJ + Collins/Simons.

IMO the reward outweighs the risk.

Butler call player only mtg, going to stay.
Im telling ya Thibs and him created this whole scenario to light a fire under the youngsters and/or increase his trade value.

Jimmy Butler is great on the court, off the court, that is another question. He might be the Terrell Owens (TO) "Team Obliterater" of this basketball generation.

Just stop. You got that bullshit straight from Skip Bayless.

Here's a teammate here giving him props. Do you research info or just swallow it? I'll trust the news from the horse's mouth before I trust an IDIOT talking head...

While I'd be happy to get rid of Turner, I'm not into the idea of giving away a young player on a rookie contract for a one-year rental. Our life-blood is rookie contracts at this point! In that scenario, I'd rather keep Turner and just let him expire. If we could somehow swing a Turner+anyone other than Dame, CJ, Nurk, Collins, Simons, or Trent then sure - but I'm not gonna hold me breath on that ever happening.

You're the one who included Simons in the deal. :dunno:

I like Collins but the dude had problems posting up guards in summer league. If he’s the reason why we won’t trade for Jimmy, well I wouldn’t be surprised bc Olshey loves his guys but ugh

This behavior doesn't increase his trade value at all.

It does the opposite.
It would improve it as of now. If he stays and plays well his value goes up as compared to now. The Wolves know this and he does too.

Interesting--per Shams, Butler had told management several days prior to yesterday that if/when he returned to practice, he was going to do exactly what he did. Down to the taking the 3rd stringers and whooping the starters, this was not just premeditated, but specifically foretold. Shams also suggests that the only players that have issue with the way Butler is going at management are KAT and Wiggins, and that Thibs is secretly very pleased with Butler's actions, hoping that instead of trading him, ownership will actually consent to keeping him and giving him the 5-year max extension.

Personally, I think that if Butler and his camp think emasculating his team's two #1 overall picks will endear him to the team owners, he's nuts.

Yeah he would be a great quick fix for a team, but isn't he 2 for 2 now on being on teams with bad chemistry? He wears out his welcome quickly. Teams will still want him, but the price they give up for him will not be very much.

See:

The risk is that it doesn't happen. I think being a contender - with or without Jimmy - is a huge long-shot. I guess I'd rather have more flexibility (rookie contracts) and see what happens with Simons/Collins/Trent. If Simons pans out, then perhaps we trade CJ down the road for a SF/PF that puts us in contention. If Simons and Collins both pan out we trade CJ for a SF. If all three pan out, then we have an excellent team and lots of good players to make any fine-tuning trades that might be necessary.
I super duper hope we don't trade Simons at this time. I have high hopes for him. I'd keep Simons over Trent Jr., Baldwin IV, etc. Especially since we don't appear to be in championship right now mode, we need to continue to develop that playoff experience, contender training, etc.

Seems like he wants...
A) To get them traded
Or
B) One of them to grow a fucking sack

I guarantee if that happened, Dame and CJ would be going at him NONSTOP.

FOR their defencies, they aren’t soft

The only reason he is getting away with this is because that whole organization is softer than Charmin

You see Nurkic letting Jimmy scream in his face, call him out, then pass the ball in the post???

This is hilarious

A player actually using his leverage to get what he wants

Well I said after 2016 they haven't had much money.
Did he do anything all that good OR bad with all that money in 2012 or 2015? On memory is seems like he didn't really do anything all that spectacular either way. 2015 they lost LA and basically went young and cheap, then they had some success and we got 2016!
I have always tried to give credit that in 2015 though they didn't spend money, they rebuilt the entire team basically from scratch and NO did a good job of finding young players to go around dame. That the Blazers made the playoffs that year was impressive.

This just keeps getting weirder and weirder. Things are so fucked up in MIN, they can't even agree on if there was a players' meeting, or not:

Jeff Teague: @ShamsCharania it wasn’t no players meeting you just made that up bro y’all gotta relax with this fake news.
– via Twitter Teague0

NBA on ESPN: Jimmy Butler confirmed to @Rachel__Nichols that he held a players-only meeting with Timberwolves players on Thursday,a day after he reported to the team for his first practice.
– via Twitter

Alex Kennedy: Another Wolves player, Darius Johnson-Odom, tweeted (then deleted) that there was no players-only meeting. So far, we have Jeff Teague, Darius Johnson-Odom and player-development coach John Lucas III saying there WASN’T a meeting versus Jimmy Butler saying there WAS a meeting.

BNM

In other words, they say coaches were present and in charge? If it was only a player-development coach, that's not much authority, so I understand the ambiguity.

Jimmy is tanking his trade value even further.... which is actually really impressive.
