In an unexpected announcement, actor Michael Caine told an MTV.com reporter that megastar Johnny Depp has been cast as Batman’s nemesis The Riddler.
Caine said he confirmed the casting through Warner Bros.
“I was with [a Warner Bros.] executive,” says Caine, who plays Bruce Wayne’s butler, Alfred Pennyworth. “I said, ‘Are we going to make another one?’ They said yeah. I said, ‘How the hell are we going to top Heath? And he says ‘I’ll tell you how you top Heath — Johnny Depp as The Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin.’ I said, ‘S–t, they’ve done it again!’”
In a follow-up report on MTV.com’s website, Hoffman denied the rumor and explained that “no one has talked to me about it ever — never.”
The idea of Hoffman playing the Penguin might seem far fetched to some, even to Hoffman who says, “I don’t know if I’d be a good Penguin to be quite honest.”
But for Depp, playing the role of the Riddler would add to his highly acclaimed list of eccentric characters including Jack Sparrow (from Pirates of the Caribbean film series), Edward Scissorhands and Sweeney Todd (Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street).
Depp nor his publicists have confirmed nor denied the report.
Rumors of Depp and Hoffman have been circulating around Hollywood and on the internet, however, Caine’s announcement is the first from anyone connected to The Dark Knight series.
The Caine interview with MTV.com was conducted at the Toronto Film Festival where Caine was promoting the film “Is There Anybody There.”
So what do you think? Was Johnny Depp your guess?
