In an unexpected announcement, actor Michael Caine told an MTV.com reporter that megastar Johnny Depp has been cast as Batman’s nemesis The Riddler.

Caine said he confirmed the casting through Warner Bros.

“I was with [a Warner Bros.] executive,” says Caine, who plays Bruce Wayne’s butler, Alfred Pennyworth. “I said, ‘Are we going to make another one?’ They said yeah. I said, ‘How the hell are we going to top Heath? And he says ‘I’ll tell you how you top Heath — Johnny Depp as The Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin.’ I said, ‘S–t, they’ve done it again!’”

In a follow-up report on MTV.com’s website, Hoffman denied the rumor and explained that “no one has talked to me about it ever — never.”

The idea of Hoffman playing the Penguin might seem far fetched to some, even to Hoffman who says, “I don’t know if I’d be a good Penguin to be quite hones
t.”

But for Depp, playing the role of the Riddler would add to his highly acclaimed list of eccentric characters including Jack Sparrow (from Pirates of the Caribbean film series), Edward Scissorhands and Sweeney Todd (Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street).

Depp nor his publicists have confirmed nor denied the report.

Rumors of Depp and Hoffman have been circulating around Hollywood and on the internet, however, Caine’s announcement is the first from anyone connected to The Dark Knight series.

The Caine interview with MTV.com was conducted at the Toronto Film Festival where Caine was promoting the film “Is There Anybody There.”

So what do you think? Was Johnny Depp your guess?

I think it's a good choice. I still haven't seen the Dark Knight (aside from the first 15 minutes), so I can't really comment on Heath's performance and how hard it would be to top it.

There will be a lot of hate on this casting, but I love it!

I'm just not a Depp fan... It's hard to second-guess Nolan though.

They have done it again.

Depp is awesome, but this movie will never top the Dark Knight.

When they told Caine that, they were making a joke out of the rumors going around with the recent Depp one. Hoffman rumor went as far back in '06 for the TDK. Nolan's also said, he doesn't think the Penguin is realistic enough to do. There's no script, nothing yet on what they plan to do. TDK is still in theaters. I wouldn't listen to anything for about a yr. There's also a chance he may not even do another one.

I had a feeling this was a reach. There is no news about this anywhere. You'd expect someone to have news on it, after all, TDK was the biggest thing this summer.

Anything he is in, he's just fucking awesome.

Favorite Movie of All-Time:

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was a human achievement; god bless.

Along with Hunter S. Thompson. They need a remake of that, IMO.

It came out in July :)

Man, I think those 2 would be awesome.

Must suck to be Hoffman. The constant Penguin rumours are basically another way of saying "You're fat."

I'm pretty sure Caine was being sarcastic. They haven't even got Nolan for a third movie. There's no way they'd touch the project until they have him on board.

It won't top Heath, you can't top Heath, but Depp as Riddler is pretty damn good IMO.

its way too early to tell from everything thats going on after the movie. i think we should wait and see until the movie actually gets into production

dude... depp is the PERFECT riddler... and as for penguin id rather have joe pesci.... HAHAH!!!

They have done it again.

Depp is awesome, but this movie will never top the Dark Knight.

I must say alot of people were saying prior to the release of TDK, that they couldnt imagine a better Joker than Nicholson. So anything is possible. Im not sayin it will, but...
