Jordan Kent out, Calabro in talks to come back

again... I do not believe, for one second, that casual fans will plan to watch Blazer games, when they wouldn't otherwise, because Calabro was the one jabbering the play-by-play.

Last season if I could watch ESPN or TNT coverage instead of Blazer broadcasting I would because I was not a fan of Kent. I didn't do that with Calabro. I'm not a fan of Calabro, it's just that he doesn't annoy me as much, lol.

I'm sure not going to miss "PAINT IT GARY TRENT JUNIOR"

But Reggie Miller sucks

lol...so does Calabro

this is all subjective opinion right?

Note that it’s the business side of operations that makes these decisions, not the basketball side. Expanding viewership is a hell of a good reason from a business standpoint.

I do not disagree...but I'll repeat my argument that I don't think Calabro will convince a single person in Seattle to tune into Blazer games if they weren't already doing so. I mean, if Mike Barret had been named the announcer of King's games, would you have tuned in?

If I didn’t have a team in my city, but was an NBA fan I think listening to a known guy would be less annoying than listening to a not all that good former football player for a college team that I viewed as the enemy.

I know, but damn. The NBA didn't want to lose the franchise in Seattle in the first place. sometimes billionaire owners get their way over the NBA.

I don't want to risk it without locking the Blazers in here contractually for decades.

The move got approved by the NBA (Cuban and Paul Allen were the only ones who voted against it)

I think if they had to redo it they wouldn't approve it; the owners are getting a split of OKC tiny revenue instead of much larger Seattle.

Being a duck offsets much weakness.
Why not just hire Softy another Seatlle guy?

Somehow these are the same owners who approved leaving Seattle and Vancouver BC for Memphis Tennessee and Oklahoma.. That’s insane

I feel like I've listened to a lot of play-by-play announcers for other teams, as well as the national TV ones. How many are objectively a better announcer than Calabro? Honestly I can't think of many. I like Joel Meyers (New Orleans), Ian Eagle (Nets), Mike Breen (Knicks), Sam Farber (Hornets), Bill MacDonald (Lakers). Honestly there are a lot that are REALLY bad, and we had probably one of the worst. Calabro I would put top 10 at least.

LMA is looking for a job. He could retire as the greatest Blazer broadcaster ever!

it's hilarious how scared some of you are about all things seattle.
I used to cover Seattle and for years during the "Battle Seattle' era and Softy and Calabro would trash Portland and the the Blazers big time.

and this is what the pro-Calabro arguments seem to have boiled down to: he's not as annoying as Kent

I prefer him to Kent. The Blazers have had a lot worse in the past. But then, I mainly watch for the basketball and file this under the heading of “Stuff I Don’t Understand Why Some Folks Get So Worked Up About”.

I've been watching non Blazer feeds since Mike and Mike... I miss Steve Jones.

I was glad when Calabro left. I didn't think highly of him at all, although he probably got tainted by Lamar Hurd a bit in my preferences. I didn't know what to think when Kent was hired, but game 1 it became apparent he was going to be an issue

IMO, Calabro & Hurd were a downgrade from Mike & Mike
