Where have you heard that Skal will be back?I don't understand why our front office would be that silly...
The Blazers have 5 games between the deadline and the all-star break, Nurkic and Skal should be back in the first game after the break, Collins in 2 or 3 weeks after... After the break, Nurk's his strain should be gone and his leg fully healed.
In a season where the Blazers are 21-27 and have almost no chance at getting anything but the 8th seed, we couldn't risk 5 games of having a role-player caliber big instead of Whiteside, because then we might lose out on that 8th seed and 1st round sweep? Instead, we'll risk not having the pieces to acquire a legitimate forward upgrade in the off-season and next season (even if Whiteside resigns), we'll risk that keeping Whiteside for those final 2 months would essentially be a rental with him leaving, we'll risk him being unhappy off the bench, we'll decide not to play Skal at all once Zach gets back, all for a 1st round loss to the hands of the Lakers?
It makes no sense to me. If all our bigs get hurt, you take the lottery pick and set yourselves up with the assets in the summer or next season to make a legitimate jump.
no, but 3 major injuries in 4 seasons certainly raises questions
I had forgotten about that patella tendon injury. I thought you were saying the calf injury was the third. My bad.
I’m no doctor, but I don’t think the fractures are that big of deal. They typically heal stronger than the original bone, particularly when there’s a titanium rod inserted in the leg.
Great post... All these stupid trade Whiteside at any cost, need to tank crowd make it sound as if we could get a starter for Whiteside or a lottery pick.If someone is willing to trade a star for Whiteside, which I really doubt, then sure. Otherwise, just because some fans around here don’t see any value in making the 8th seed doesn’t mean that the players and management see it that way. Dame will take any shot he gets. Carmelo and Ariza aren’t looking to sit out one of the final playoff shots they’re going to get. Besides, a rotation of Nurk and Whiteside makes the Blazers dangerous.
I’m not sure you can count on Skal being back. Depending upon how extensive the damage to his cartilage is, it could go either way.
We'd be the favorites to get the 8th seed without Whiteside. We have 3 natural Cs when healthy, we dont need 4.If someone is willing to trade a star for Whiteside, which I really doubt, then sure. He probably would get a middle or end of the second round pick... in that case just keep the damn starting center. Heck I'd even consider resigning him in the summer if the price is right.
Maybe he gets a setback, but if he doesnt Id expect him back around the allstar break.Where have you heard that Skal will be back?
Last I heard was that around the ASB they would 're-evaluate' him. Nothing about him actually returning to action then.

Severly limiting our options to ever be a contender just to get the 8 seed this year which we'd probably get no matter what would be an extreme lack of judgement by the front office.
How are they matching salary for a star around draft time? What about free agency? Next year?Keeping Whiteside doesn't mean the team severely limited options to ever be a contender. Maybe it means there are no good offers for Whiteside. Maybe it means he has more value on the roster than what the team can get in return.
Now if we can get a good draft pick or possible long term starter for Whiteside directly or indirectly sure I'd like us to pull the trigger. I am skeptical any of those options or your many trade ideas will be available.
You had opinions of trading for Blake Griffin being a key way to build a contending team many times in the last 10 months. Your analysis was flawed then. Part of your flawed analysis was overlooking the severity of Blake's injuries, as you are doing with Nurk.
Need to tank crowd? Get a starter? Get a lottery pick?
You should really pay more attention. You apparently have no idea why were saying we need to trade Whiteside.
What you need to learn to accept is that not every one does or will agree with your ideas and that others might prefer a different process. At some point it might be better to just move on from a big contract rather than keep trying to roll over one expiring for another expiring for little benefit. hoopsjock example of acquiring Batum and a 2nd round pick or two just to have another expiring for next year and start the process all over again isn't a good deal in my book.

He was injured his first year here and missed the playoffs. The only playoff games he played was the New Orleans series we got swept.
Definitely concerned that he can ever play a full season and playoffs. That's one of the reasons I dont think we should ignore the chance to resign Whiteside.
This is worrisome
Did someone say this, or you're posturing?he’s not coming back after the break. It’s gonna be March if and when he’s ready.

I don't know about that, I was imagining Nurk instead of Swanigan out there last night and despite Swanigan playing okay and hustling I still think a 75% Nurk would be better.more importantly, if he does come back, will he be impactful? I am not so sure. He should just wait until next year. There is no way he will be close 100% since he will not have played a real game for like a year.

Exactly, lower calf strains are scary. This is the injury KD had before he tore his achilles. I can't imagine the organization rushing him back after Hood's achilles injury. They have to be careful with a lower calf strain. Don't want an achilles injury.
