Mark Walter is just buying the lakers for a cool 10 billion, but only at a majority, so not the full owner.
 
Forbes valued Lakers at 3 billion recently. Selling for 10
 
I'd have no problem if Jeanie Buss took her share and bought the Blazers.

Rather have a person who loves basketball than a giant corporation that is buying the Lakers.

Other sports franchises TWG owns:

  • LA Dodgers

  • LA Sparks

  • Chelsea FC

  • RC Strasbourg Alsace

  • Andretti Global

  • Spire Motorsports

  • Cadillac F1 Team

  • Wayne Taylor Racing

If the Lakers weren't in LA, they'd be a poverty franchise under the Buss family. They have *no* money.

The Lakers passed to Buss' children when he died in 2013, and his daughter Jeanie has served as the Lakers' governor since.

Walter has been a stakeholder in the Lakers since 2021, when he purchased Phil Anschutz's share of 26%. That was also when Walter received a right of first refusal on the majority share of the team.

So if TWC already owned 26%, and the Buss family is keeping 15%, that means TWC is paying $10 billion for 59% of the team. That's insane.

I don't think that's what the 10 billion means. I think it means the team was valued at 10 billion, and he's paying 59% of that for his share.
 
I've just seen some things that suggest that the Dodgers owner is an asshole - is that this guy, and is he?

He's putting a great product on the field.

If the next owner of the Blazers is an asshole and we win 2 championships in 11 seasons, are we really going to care that they're an asshole?

Looks like private equity is going to own a good percentage of pro sports. Probably college football at some point with new alignments.
 
This is horrible news for those of us who despise the Lakers.

The Buss family actually wasn't that wealthy comparatively speaking. They avoided the luxury tax and were thrifty.

Now they're going to have way more resources.

That seems really low considering.. is recently in the last few years or last few month? If possibly precovid, id take those valuations and toss em out the window.
