If it seems odd, perhaps even dysfunctional, that an organization would operate without a permanent GM for an entire season and dangle a group of executives along the way, Miller says it’s an unfortunate byproduct of circumstance. After kicking the tires on six GM candidates over the summer, Miller suspended the search on Nov. 16, when it was a real possibility the lockout would wipe out the entire season and he thought a new GM’s salary was better spent preserving jobs within the organization.

“I think it has been a weird season with the lockout,” he said. “We weren’t sure if we were going to have a season and when we did get the lockout resolved, it was a quick turnaround. I think it could have been more disruptive to try and hurry up and bring somebody in at that point ... and it just made sense from our perspective to stick with what we have and get through the season.”

“We’ve been up and down,” Miller said, reflecting on the Blazers’ season thus far. “We’ve had some really good games and we’ve played well at times and we’ve had some games where we’ve struggled. I still think we’re in a pretty good position right now. If we can get on a good roll, win a few games in a row, then we’ll be able to position ourselves right there in the mix. I feel good about what’s ahead.”

Well, its nice to know the team President is content with mediocrity.

In his prior life, he spent his time explaining why Nike sweat-shops weren't that bad. Trying to put a positive spin on this season and the "no GM" scenario is much worse.

It meant to me that no one was going to take the heat for acquiring Failton or Crawful.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...

Wow. Miller just described a total failure on his part. I feel so much less confident in Blazers management now. And I wasn't confident before.

Steve Patterson > Larry Miller

Smith over Faried, Miller for Felton....

This guy is doing as much damage as John Nash.

Chad and Cho were/are nothing but puppets for Miller and the vulcans.

Ugh...I still cringe at the prospect of Nolan Smith, especially over Faried. Disgusting.

Good lord. Fuck off, Larry Miller, you slimy POS. Horrible evaluation of the roster and the team. Management needs to be overhauled.

Yeah, especially since the brand he was working for was top-tier. The Blazer brand? Not so much.

I'm still not that impressed by Faried. I'm really not. He'll be a steady backup, long-term, in the league. I've long been a Smith fan. He'll either bust out and be better-than-average, or he'll flame out. Most people probably don't see him like that. But having my opinion of his ceiling, I'd rather go for that, than going for a steady backup PF - there are a lot of steady backup PF's in the NBA (we in Portland don't realize this, as we've always failed to pursue one until recently).

Also... interesting that fans didn't like the Nolan pick. Several were wondering why we couldn't find some average college PG in the draft and have them blossom in the NBA. I think that's what Portland went for with Smith. And they do it, and people bitch. And before he gets an opportunity, he's written off.

LMAO. You're joking, right? I'm sorry, but Nolan Smith is the definition of mediocre. Completely invisible out on the basketball court. Is it bad that I have more hope for Luke Babbitt than I do Nolan Smith? He's been horrible. Faried has been far more productive and Nolan has a HORRIBLE PER in the limited time he's seen. Just an atrocity of a draft pick, especially when we really needed a backup to LA at the time. I definitely have written him off, deservedly so. Smith has not shown ONE skill in which he is adequate in. Not one.

My problem with Smith is that he was drafted and is playing as a PG when he really is a SG. He's another in the long list of "combo" guards that we try and shoe horn into playing the point. The only reason he ran the point at Duke last year was because Irving got hurt early in the year and they had no one else to do it. Even then I didn't think he ever looked all that comfortable playing the 1.

I think a lot of people were expecting Nolan to be an almost finished product. Being a 4 year guy and all, and developing under Coach K. He looks too hesitant and needs too much space to get his shot off.

Nolan was supposedly a Nate pick. Coach K talked the world of him, if I remember correctly from the draft fodder I was reading at the time.

I think you are right. At least that's what my feeble brain remembers as well

So Larry Miller thinks everything is fine? Dear God this franchise is a mess

I like Larry Miller less than Nate. A lot less. At least Nate deserves a certain measure of respect, despite our long-standing differences. God we need new management.

Did you even read the article? The Blazer Organization is closer than they've ever been since 1995 to operating in the Black. The Rose Garden has sold out nearly 200 games in a row, AND the Blazers have the opportunity to let their contracts expire to the tune of only $24 Million tied up in Payroll next season (Not Including Nic).

Sounds Pretty Fine to me. Blazer fans aren't going anywhere, and we have a solid core to build around.

Uh-oh. The business side is the measure of success, not the basketball side. We are the Milwaukee Bucks. Zzzzzzz.....

Thanks, Paul. It was pretty good while it lasted.

We lost Brandon Roy, We Lost Greg Oden. They drafted a PG, looking for the Answer. They traded for Felton/Crawford looking for an answer, they swooped up Wallace looking for an answer. Maybe its been a failure, Maybe not. But don't act as if they've done nothing to try and get better after all this organization has been through.

People are acting like the Organization is a speed boat that can turn on a dime, "Oh turn there, go there, do this, do that." When in fact its a giant ship that takes time to maneuver. Building a competitive team is a slow process, Especially for a small market team. Take a step back and have some patience.

Getting so tired of hearing "Blazer Fans deserve better," in perfect world maybe, but this aint it.

If we use the metaphor of a speedboat for the Blazers future as discussed on this board, then you have to include 20 or so drunken captains with inflated notions of their nautical abilities all battling for the wheel while have differing ideas of what the best course is to get to the championship port.

Who handed you the torch as the new apologist of the board?

I'm not asking much. Hire a GM, fire the coach and replace him with a coach with new ideas.

Do you work for the Blazers?
