I was thinking about this and I think just about the best acquisition we can get in the free agent market is Rajon Rondo. Him alongside Simons, Little and Nance would be super exciting in the second unit. He'd get the best out of the young guys and teach them how to play the right way. The athleticism is off the charts. Just need someone to bring it out of them. Can't think of a better guy than Rondo.

My bet is he is going going back back to Cali Cali (Lakers)

But honestly our ceiling with this team is the second round and going out in the second round will likely mean Dame is gone if he's still here after the deadline. I'm still holding out hope that we're now going to trade CJ and RoCo for Simmons.

I'll go on record right now - folks are going to miss Kanter. Does anyone here really think Zeller could have defended Joker so well he changed the outcome of the series?

Last season, his defensive rating was 4 points better than Kanter. His offensive rating was 7 points worse. I'm not convinced that is a net improvement!

A big defensive plus at "positions" of need on a team that was horrific at D last yr with a new coach who emphasizes D, and his flexibility to play the 4/5 positions as a small ball C, good pick n roll player, good screen setter, how can this not raise our ceiling somewhat? not sayin a huge game changer but Zeller/Nance certainly an improvement IMO over Kanter/Melo

A back up big that isn't really very big. Portland has some size issues for sure. I also wonder if we can see more than 40 games out of him? He has not played a full season ever in his career.
I'm happy with the swap for DJJ more because i just feel Jones was a terrible fit. I don't see the Blazers needing a late first round pick. They need veteran players now not rookies.

Overall this looks like a decent move to me. Not groundbreaking but it does improve the team while not hurting them financially. CJ is not going anywhere for all you CJ haters out there.
Nance brings in more defensive ability for the bench that sorely needed it.

I think if everything pans out( not a good percentage of that happening, but that kinda goes for all teams) we are a top for in the west. With a bit of luck during the season we could be top two to three.

Usually starts 3-7 games into the season. Always begins with- "I know it's a small sample size BUT........"
Of course the Blazers have the toughest first 20 games of the entire league but never mind that.
 
Did this fly over my head? Which is impossible! My reflexes are simply too quick! I would have reached up and grabbed it out of the air!

But everything changed on July 29. The Cavs drafted Evan Mobley with the No. 3 pick. Mobley, the most important player in Cleveland’s potential renaissance, is likely to start at power forward this season and the organization is deeply committed to his on-court development. Not only does he bring many of Nance’s best traits but it creates a logjam in the frontcourt."

Here is from another Cleveland sportswriter:
"8. That said, Nance brought much to the Cavs beyond scoring. As one NBA scout told me, “Larry is the best player in the trade. He is an elite defender. He is unselfish. Analytics loves all the little things he does on the court, and so do coaches. But Markkanen does bring very good outside shooting. Larry has battled a lot of injuries.”

9. The biggest challenge for Nance has been staying healthy. He has missed 70 games in the last three seasons. The 2020-21 season was extremely frustrating because of various injuries, as he was out for 37 games. But his leadership will be missed. He has to be the only player in NBA history to be happy when traded from the Lakers to Cleveland.

10. The fans in Portland will absolutely love Nance. He is everything you want in a teammate. I miss him already. I got to meet Larry Nance Jr. two years ago just prior to the end of the 18/19 season, and we had a brief, but pleasant chat. He was a genuinely nice kid with a terrific attitude who took the time to talk with an old man when he didn’t have to. The guy was very loyal to the city of Cleveland and made it clear he felt lucky to be where he was. He may have his injury issues, and he’s not as high profile as so many players, but on chemistry alone I think he’s going to be a terrific fit. We didn’t need a third “star”. We needed a Swiss Army knife and that’s what we got in Nance. Neil actually deserves a pat on the back for this one.

that’s the concern Dude. Fuck Olshey. When can we trade a first again? This seems like the nail in the coffin of our hopes to actually compete. Horrible. We needed an All-Star caliber starter. Nance is fine in a vacuum but we are on the clock. Hopefully we cant trade CJ possibly after firing Olshey next offseason or how dies that work? This is crushing if it truly prevents a CJ trade.

With Billups defensive IQ we’d have a good chance to be elite on defense. And then have CJ come off the bench as a firecracker sixth man… oh that would be interesting.

Either way this season just got a lot more exciting.

To anyone complaining about giving up first rounders, what does it matter? We’re trying to keep Dame happy now. If he leaves, we’ll receive an excess share of quality non-protected first rounders back. We’d also be able to grab a ton more shipping out the rest of the team if we’re going full rebuild.
